@thelivingroyale sums up my point above. If Craig's versatility was at the level of Oldman, posters such as @Ali might have an easier time disconnecting him from Bond.

I would assume, it will be a minority, who has this problem with him, so its not really telling.

But lets not trash this one thread. Its not meant for that. If its not possible to argue in peace, lets just stop. Its unworthy of all of us.

^^ But I want to say something, too. :P

I still say, if you go open minded into watching Tattoo, you cannot, by all means, being bothered by the fact, that this actor is Bond in another life. There is no trace of that and so its just in your imagination.

Every time I see Craig I see Bond. As Ali says, it's the baggage that comes with the territory. Unfortunately, as good an actor as Craig is, he is not the exceptional one that is held aloft in this forum. For that, you would have to look at someone such as Gary Oldman. One of the most versatile and gifted actors I've ever seen. Craig doesn't come close, by comparison.

True. The only thing I don't see Craig as Bond in is Our Friends In The North.

Oldman is a very good example, he's a brilliant actor. You never think of him as Dracula or the police cheif from Batman when you're watching Tinkor Tailor.

Christopher Eccleston is another good example, when you see him as the nutcase in Shallow Grave or as an ordinary guy in the film about Hillsborough, you don't think "look it's Doctor Who"

A case could also be made for Tom Hardy I think but I haven't seen him in much.

"Every time I see Craig I see Bond" and "the only thing I don't see Craig as Bond in is..."

Wow. Ok, then. But like I said in the other thread, that baggage is yours, not his. That you see him as Bond in TGWTDT is amazing enough, but if you also somehow manage to see him as Bond in films like, say, Some Voices, Hotel Splendide, The Mother, Sylvia, Love Is The Devil, Enduring Love and Road To Perdition, the problem is yours. That's ok, and I don't even consider that criticism of the actor, but you might need to have your eyesight checked. ;)

In Dan's defense, when you nab a role like Bond, it will likely be the highlight of your career. As it has been stated by dear Cubby, Bond is bigger than any actor playing him, so as times goes on and Bond's acclaim continues to be a common thread in our lives, the more likely each subsequent actor will be referred to as "James Bond" in every film they appear in during and after their era for the sheer renown and scope of the franchise itself.

Why? Is he not in any of them?

Unfortunately after you've played Bond it's likely that is what most people will see you for, Craig did have quite a respectable filmography before he played Bond, not something apart from Dalton that any other Bond could boast, before Bond he was quite versatile and unrecognisable, many people will never accept Connery or Moore as anything else. Personally I feel after Bond due to his versatility Craig will have a successful and acclaimed career

As for Oldman the man is a chameleon, he disappears inside his roles and lets you forget you are watching Gary Oldman, his performance as George Smiley in Tinker is utterly mesmerising, he becomes the character totally, you can forget he is Gary Oldman totally. I can't wait to see him inhabit the character again for Smiley's People which is slated for 2014 shoot.

Glad someone agrees with me on the genius of Gary Oldman.

    Some NEWS for a change

Bond and his girl Rachel Weisz to heat up Broadway in Harold Pinter's Betrayal of love and deceit

The notion about starting pre production next year as well as Mendes even considering is not confirmed, so lets see, how much of the rest is true. But there WAS talk about them doing a play together.

^^ I don't trust that paper... and really that's still rumors more than news: lots of IFs there.

But it is Baz! Let's face it, that man knows things. Thanks for the link @Germanlady!

^^ But it's still ifs and all that... :) Obviously interesting if it'll actually happen. (As well as frustrating for those not rich enough to afford NY trips. If they'd do that in London, though...)

My gut feelng says, there is more then a little truth to it, even more so, that the ifs are well explained and its not reported as a done deal. And yes, Baz came up with Harris/Moneypenney first.

James Bond finally gets Bafta recognition for Skyfall as Argo scoops top film award
    ...
Skyfall director Sam Mendes paid tribute to Daniel Craig’s ‘bravery and brilliance’ in his third Bond outing, adding that he regretted that Craig had not been nominated for an award.

‘I think it’s the curse of Bond,’ he said following the win. ‘Sometimes, because Bond is the spine of the movie and you know he’s always going to be there, you take him for granted. I wish he had been nominated.’

I finally saw Elizabeth yesterday. I have nothing against historical dramas, and the cast was fabulous and they all did a great job, but on the whole I didn't really manage to get into it.

Anyway... Daniel's role in it is very small, but interesting. (If I remember correctly Barbara was impressed by what she called his presence on the screen.) For those who haven't seen it: he plays a catholic priest who is a religious fanatic, really, and is part of a political conspiracy to kill the Queen.

There is a scene involving Daniel that became even more interesting when I listened to the director's commentary. He goes something like (from memory) ... "what you see here, it was not my idea, the actor just went and did it" [at this point in the commentary I burst out laughing] "and it was..." (he sounds a bit shocked) "...I thought it was so brutal and I just kept it... It was actor's idea." The movie is from 1998, btw. So, I wonder, has he always just done stuff like that... things that just feel right instinctively to him as an actor - and then simply waited to hear if the director agrees... and I wonder how often that happens. I also wonder if he only works with people who allow that sort of improvisation, or if sometimes he gets yelled at "who the hell asked you to do that, just follow the script and my orders!"

    :P

I think, his walking down the hall is the first time, Barbara noticed him - his presence in this scene. At 3:50

That was funny! She obviously doesn't stay around when he's watching the old films. I forgive her, she's great! I'm a huge fan of hers for many, many years.

Daniel Craig on fans’ expectations and keeping fit for James Bond role

    http://metro.co.uk/2013/02/21/daniel-craig-on-fans-expectation-and-keeping-fit-for-james-bond-role-3506394/

    Craig 'nothing' like James Bond

Los Angeles, Feb 21: Actor Daniel Craig says he is different from his onscreen James Bond character in "every way".
The 44-year-old has portrayed the role of the British superspy in three movies, "Casino Royale", "Quantum of Solace" and "Skyfall".
Asked in what ways he is different from 007, he said: "Every way. Nothing - that man has nothing to do with me. Nothing at all, no."
While Craig admits he has been typecast by a number of people for playing Bond, he has no plans to relinquish the role, reports contactmusic.com.
"It's working out for me at the moment. So I will keep at it, and there will be other stuff to do. When I accepted the job, I knew that it would have a major effect on my career," he said.
"I mean, people would find it very difficult not to see me as Bond now, which I always knew would happen. But what can I do about it? It was my choice to be Bond. So I've got to get on with it and try to be the best Bond I can," he added.

He has said before that he separates what he does with who he is, but there are many out there who don’t seem able to make that distinction.

I suppose he gets the boring, grumpy and serious tag thrown at him too because apart from being papped and promotions he doesn’t give much away when it comes to his life away from the camera. This little excerpt sort of sums it up really.

    -You're very private, aren't you?
    - I don't think I'm private - I think I'm a pretty open book. What are you laughing at? I am! Look, I'll talk about my own opinions, and I'll talk about my work, but I don't talk about my close friends and family, because I want to keep that stuff separate. My friends are incredibly important to me, and I would kill for my family - as I'm sure you would for yours. But this is not their world, and they have to be kept separated. I can't take the risk of opening that door.

This is a video of Dan being interviewed while doing press for Layer Cake. I chose to post it not only because it is an insightful interview, but also because there is a great comment by Dan about the Bond role (this was before he was announced as the new 007 in October 2005). Enjoy. :)

Great interview. Thanks @Brady. Well, this just confirms to expect the enexpected, particularly when it comes down to who the new director's going to be. If Boyle is announced, I'm not going to be surprised.
