I think that creative direction is more a wish than anything else. The best novels had already been adapted.
We'd probably have Lazenby doing things like LALD. All action, no substance.
The 'creative direction' of the Bond films was never really a consideration. Cubby and Harry were concerned with putting a big slab of entertainment on the screen that would make lots of money and fund the next one.
There was no consideration for future generations having easy access to these films, analysing them frame by frame, listing the goofs, noticing actors who played different roles in a Bond film four years prior etc. They were the entertainment equivalent of fast food. Enjoyed for an evening and forgotten thereafter.
The fact some directors took pride in their work and fashioned a great film with enduring appeal was merely a bonus. For Cubby getting Sean Connery on board for DAF and scoring at the box office big time made DAF a more successful and satisfying film than OHMSS. For him.
LALD took all the elements from the past decade that Cubby and Harry felt were the sure fire winners and pumped them up. And, for a few years at least Bond still had no competition to worry about and the films were able to feel their way into the new decade on good will and past glories.
Worst case scenario= Amazon plays it "safe" and makes Bond very bland and vanilla.
As for "woke", who knows? It didn't really change anything that the current Q was gay or that Moneypenny was black, did it? Dame Judi Dench is just as emblematic playing M as Bernard Lee was. I just hope they keep Bond's character intact. Bond is as much antihero as hero, and this is on purpose. If they can keep that core, I think it could work.
I am hopeful people Amazon puts in charge will be respectful of the former films, the entire legacy of Bond - and that they can and hopefully will give us good, maybe even very good, movies starring that character James Bond. I do hope so! Great action, good looking actors, a decent script, etc.
But I don't think the new films will feel truly "right" to me without someone in Cubby's family involved. Looking forward to the next one, totally new, but ... my heart tells me the truly golden era is finished. I won't look forward to them in quite the same way. Even if wonderful; it's a subtle difference for me.
Will there be a gun barrel? No idea. Will there be a theme song? Yes. Will there be amazing stunts? Yes. Will there be an M? I think so. But it will be more of an exciting action/spy movie for me, instead of the very special cocktail that was James Bond (in movies) that were such a part of my life. These are just my personal feelings; not looking to debate/argue, etc.
