To be honest I'm not sure Batman is the most difficult role to cast. He's just got to brood a bit and wear a mask. I don't think he's been miscast yet anyway - Superman is trickier.

    Well said. I agree.

Your all kidding right… Superman is easy someone who just smiles a lot would be fine…

Batman has a ton of intricacies and as for there never being a bad one George Clooney anyone?

Clooney was a fine choice for Batman. The whole movie around him was not his fault.

Poor Clooney looked embarrassed to be there most of the time, can't really blame him, even more so with Chris O'Donnell's whining dialed up to 11.

That's not entirely true. He also has to have a great chin.

    .

    :)

    Bruce Campbell then?

As for Batman, it depends. Do we want an awesome Batman, an awesome Bruce Wayne, both, or more? (Bale qualified as the latter IMO: great Batman, great 'real' Bruce Wayne and great 'socialite' Bruce Wayne.)

And yes, I agree, he'd never been miscast before. As mentioned, B&R was not Clooney's fault.

The Bruce Wayne bit is the only part with any kind of acting challenge to it though, isn't it? When the mask is on it's just: be sullen, act tough and don't say much, maybe learn some punching. Despite the number of actors and range of tones the Batman films to this date have bagged, all of the performances in actual Batman cape-on mode are pretty much the same, aren't they? Bale did a silly voice so maybe that counts against him, but does anyone stand out as being particularly good in Batman mode that he stands out from the rest? I can't think of one but maybe I'm wrong.
It doesn't seem to be a role like Bond where the actor makes an enormous difference: the costume is pretty much doing the heavy lifting. It feels to me like being brooding is perhaps quite easy. Look at Brosnan in that hotel room in TND: if he can do it...

In my opinion, Keaton was fantastic with the cape and cowl on. He didn't just stand there brooding; his Batman could emote.

A major component to acting that can be used to great effect for costumed heroes is body language. This applies to both comic books and live action. Too often in American productions like the Raimi Spider-Man films that the mask would be torn off so that we could see the actor emote with his face. Whereas the Japanese have actually mastered the use of conveying thought and emotional all through body language with their Super Sentai franchise. The recent Spider-Man films have been able to use more of that albeit with the addition of the eyeholes synchronized to the state of his emotion.

I’m curious what one movie Affleck did well as Batman for you. Was it. Batman V Superman or Justice League?

I remember watching the second version of Justice League and it's a full two hours before Batman turns up. Incredible.

I think Affleck did well in all his scenes: BvS, ZN's JL (there is no other for me anymore), and SS.

I can’t say that I was very encouraged by Gunn’s announcement, I’m on the mature side and tend to lean towards the legacy characters.

I strongly recommend Snyder's cut of JL, @Risico007, and I know that @Fire_and_Ice_Returns does so as well. It's one of the very best DC live-action products I have ever seen--nevermind the running time and aspect ratio which, apparently, upset some people out there but are a good thing in my book. ;-)

I should probably warn you then that it takes a while to see him, but there's a lot of Batman in the film in total, so no worries. ;-)

Affleck was best in JL, but that’s also helped that his Batman isn’t written like a lunatic like in BvS. I do like that Whedon addition where he’s encouraging Flash by just telling him “save one person, and you’ll know what to do after”.

Perhaps the one thing I can give that cut.

For my own part, I thought Affleck was excellent in BvS but felt like he was phoning it in in JL. He came across as tired and unenthusaistic by contrast with how invested he seemed in the role in BvS. To me at least. I did really like that one line in Whedon's version. But as with Dimi that really is all that I like about that version.

The negative reception of BvS must have really took the wind out of his sails, as he slowly opted out of DC after JL. But he also had his own personal issues he has to tend to rather than try keeping up with the DC machine.

It’s too bad, I would have liked to see what THE BATMAN with Affleck directing, writing, and starring would have been like.

So would I. They should have slowly built up the Batman's story, parallel to Superman's, before throwing them both in the same arena. At times, BvS feels like there's some backstory (the Robin suit, for example) that will be revealed several films down the line. It's pretentious to think that way when you're only two films in. You are just naturally assuming that this series will be able to subsist on box office gold for a long time.

WB wanted too much too fast. They squandered a lot of potential and a truly fantastic cast. While I'm happy with the films we were given, there are also tons of "what ifs" and "what could have beens". Affleck's "The Batman" is among the ones that truly hurt.

It’s so weird thinking of BvS with all the set ups that haven’t been paid off.

Actually the worst is Snyder filming a new epilogue for JL despite knowing he’ll never actually follow it up. My big issue with his JL is that it’s clearly not the film he would have delivered in theaters in 2017, but something he made with the benefit of hindsight and a streaming service. More frustrating, he claimed he has several different cuts of the film, and I’m betting one of them is something closer to what he was planning for 2017.

The lost Affleck Batman film definitely ranks high for me as far as missed opportunities go. That said, I do kind of look at BvS as the missing solo Batman film in the DCEU chronology. Even though the climax is more about Superman, the film does feel like it focuses more on Batman as a character throughout.

I'm also okay with the film diving right into Batman's career midway. It's obvious DC did that just to try to play catchup with the 10-film jump Marvel had on them, but I think they pulled it off well. It made the world feel a bit more lived in, a bit more real. I liked getting the origin of Superman in Man of Steel and then having him interact with an Earth where Batman has already been operating for years. I was a little bit less keen, however, on throwing mini-introductions for Aquaman, Flash, and Cyborg into the same film.

The extended epilogue of Snyder's JL was quite unnecessary. As you say, there's no need to spend time introducing new characters and setting up future storylines that you already know aren't going to play out. What's the point? It doesn't add anything to the film that precedes it. I agree Snyder's JL would have been a stronger work overall had he simply focused on the story at hand and wrapped things up 20-30 minutes sooner.

That ending with Superman flying up in the skies of Metropolis was the PERFECT ending for JL. Maybe keep the Lex bit as a post-credit as it was originally intended, or just delete it entirely since it was originally meant to set up Affleck’s THE BATMAN. I’m pretty sure that was actually imposed by WB because Snyder originally had the stance of DC films having proper endings as shown in MOS and BvS, which was the opposite of Marvel’s model.
