I'm conflicted on this because I do think Sope Dirisu is a fantastic actor and embodies what I believe Bond is, although my question would be.
How far do you stray from convention in Bond before you've lost the essence of what the character is?

    Good question, @Jordo007

But it’s not straying from convention if the man, no matter his tone of skin, or hair colour, or whatever, maintains what Bond is:

    King and Country before himself.

    Style.

    Class.

    Alpha male.

    Physically driven (quite frankly, Sope breaks the necks of any candidates— inside of a minute);

    High-level sex appeal.

    Charismatic and charming.

So casting Sope wouldn’t be betraying the attributes of James Bond. Convention is still in place, but with a new external package (which happens every time they re-cast)!

And @talos7 is certainly not a bigot/racist. The man gives thoughtful replies and posts. He likes what he likes and has never been disrespectful of others. Talos never has to explain his perspectives since he’s always clear (and comes nowhere close to anything negative or toxic (unless you’re looking for a fight 👊, 😂!! Have you seen how this guy takes care of himself?!?! 💪!)).

Sorry, can’t habe Dirisu. He’s secretly an American!
Is Gangs of London worth a watch? The only thing I’ve heard about it is that it had a crazy fight sequence in ep 1 or 2 of the first season.

Also on the topic of young British actors having three good episodes in a big TV show and being linked to Bond: Has Ewan Mitchell been mentioned? He’s pretty good in the couple of House of the Dragon episodes he’s been in and he certainly has a „cruel mouth“.

I was coming on here to say the same thing about Ewan Mitchell albeit i think he is early 20s so probably still young.

Also one more for the Sope bandwagon here!

I am missing a joke, I am sure, about Sope Dirisu secretly being American...?
As for Ewan Mitchell...you are joking about the "cruel mouth", yes ? He could play the Joker with no makeup or prosthetics, given that mouth.
I know. Superficial. Mean. But Bond should be handsome, yes ?

These are basically exactly my thoughts on the matter as well. I don't believe Bond's skin colour to be inextricably linked to the character in the way the characteristics you list are. It's obviously okay to prefer a white actor in the role, but it can still be James Bond if they don't.

    @peter good post mate.

I must admit I feel very similar to @talos7 on this but I can see why Sope is capturing the imagination. He's got a lot of presence in Gangs Of London, and I'd sooner him get the role than Elba or Page.

"King and Country before himself" ???

I refer you, please, to Bond at the river with Ms. Trench at the beginning of FRWL, and Bond with the Lady-on-the-Yacht whose life had been so dull until that moment when Bond, well, dropped in.
Of course, those delays were at the request - spoken explicitly (Sylvia) or with her eyes (Yacht Lady) - of the ladies. One could say, then, that those ladies were part of the "Country" (Yacht Lady near Gibraltar ? Umm...yeah, I just decided she's British) which Bond, err, serves before himself, by, you know, servicing members of the country. Indeed. What Bond does for King and Country ! (YOLT, arguably another moment)

@Since62 ...Bond can still serve country while also ordering nutritious side-snacks... Something to do with "elevating" performance.....

In the past EON has screentested actors who possessed varying degrees and accomplishment; they are rumored to have approached others with fairly high profiles. I wonder if they will continue that trend. I think they will choose who they think is the most appropriate for what they want to do with the character ; but on a one to ten scale of fame, one being a complete unknown, ten being a superstar, I think the pick will be a 6 or 7.

100% agree. I might say a 5-6 on the scale, personally, but that just be my preference; not really enamoured with any of the suggestions put forth so far

What would you have thought if the suggestion was Craig before he got the job? I know I probably wouldn't have been sold on the idea.

Sometimes I think it's really hard to envision the actor as Bond until they eventually don the tux and show they are the part.

And how high was his profile, specifically to the general public? Although he was a successful actor, I think it would have been fairly low.

True - Dan was reasonably (but not very) well known on British tv in the late 90s/early 00s. I'd seen him in several things, liked him and knew he was a good actor - but couldn't see him as Bond at all. Usual reasons: Bond should look like Dalton or similar. CR stamped out any doubts - I was totally bowled over by how genuinely great Dan was. That's why whoever the new guy is, I'll reserve judgment til I've actually seen the film.

Interesting, I’m happy to hear this.

    https://screenrant.com/james-bond-younger-actor-never-producer-response/

”We’ve tried looking at younger people in the past. But trying to visualize it doesn’t work. Remember, Bond’s already a veteran. He’s had some experience. He’s a person who has been through the wars, so to speak. He’s probably been in the SAS or something. He isn’t some kid out of high school that you can bring in and start off. That’s why it works for a thirty-something.”

Always reassuring to read quotes like these. :)

Agreed look I think it’s safe to say the actor won’t be that much of a reinvention for 007 he will likely be male mid to late 30’s British.

As for who I want James Norton looks the part and the fan trailer I saw has me convinced…

Will it be him who knows but that is who my money is on for what it’s worth

Not wanting a black Bond isn’t racist. @Jeremy is though.

Why doesn't this idiot get banned? The only thing you do is troll. If I would have been admin I would have banned your silly a** a long time ago.

@MajorDSmythe You however are the man. On point!

100% true on your second point.

I was very sceptical about Daniel Craig when he got the part. When a friend (a professional actor) told me he was the guy who played the killer monk in Elizabeth, I could not believe it. The promo shot they made calmed me somehow, but only partially. It took the teaser to calm my doubts.

First ever time I saw Craig, I instantly liked the look of him....and with the longer hair, he had that Daltonesque look about him. That's why I wanted him with the longer hair....at least the way he was presented to the world in that promotional pic of him in a tux, where his gun's silencer was very prominent. His hair even had the comma in that shot. Also, it looked as if his hair was dyed black for that shot as well.

It was a great promo shot. But I was still worried. After all, any good professional photographer can make a flattering picture.

When I first heard Craig was in the running I was skeptical, he definitely did not fit my mental image of James Bond.

Then, when he was officially cast I decided to keep an open mind and felt they at least got a good actor for the part. Soon afterwards I checked out Layer Cake and knew he could make for a good Bond, I was further convinced after watching Munich.
  • I’m ecstatic that the Dirisu hype train is gaining steam! Found this video from long time Bond set photographer Greg Williams where Sope talks a bit about his process and we also get a peek at some of his fight training.

  • It seems like I’m in the minority but the first promo pic didn’t do it for me and I wasn’t a fan of his look at all.

For me this one was much, much better and had me relieved.

I’m with you; the second picture nails it. The shorter haircut is cleaner and more masculine.

Well I join you. I don't think the fuzz on his face helps nor that he looks a bit worried in the first one, which I imagine he probably was, but that second one he's stone-cold Bond, and the short hair is an extension of that.

In hindsight i really like the daltonian haircut (shorter sideburns and a higher sidepart than in the promo pic) he had at the announcement stage. I dunno if it would have suited him as much as he got older though.

Dalton’s hair was problematic, too fluffy. Unfortunately that carried over to Brosnan in Goldeneye.
  • Agreed. Didn’t mind it too much in TLD but LTK was a little too Dracula for my taste.
