Quick Big Mi6 Title Sequence Ranking Game

Hi everyone,

This one’s easy to participate, just pm me your personal title sequence ranking (EON + CR67 & NSNA) and I’ll put all lists together, compile an overall ranking and reveal each entry one at a time until the top two, who will be revealed together.

Your number one will receive 10 points while your bottom choice will receive only 1 point. All the others will receive 9-2 points in accordance with where you put them.

This will be our 6th game of this kind, our previous winners were:

Best film: OHMSS
Best main Bond girl: Tracy
Best original score: OHMSS
Best main villain: Sanchez

    I forgot about CR67, but I can revise my list and send it again. For NSNA, do we include the opening scene for as long as the credits are shown? Or just the short sequence with the 007 pattern?

    That’s a difficult one, but let’s define title sequence as the actual visuals that accompany the titles sans other scenes.

    For instance one wouldn’t include the shot of the Devonshire with ‘Directed by Roger Spottiswoode’ imposed upon it as an integral part of TND’s title sequence.

    In that regard I’d say only the 007 signs would count for NSNA. I would dare to guess that it won’t affect NSNA’s placement that much in the long run though, but you never know of course :)

    I went to make a list, but its proving very difficult.
    The fact is, I love nearly ALL of the titles sequences. They all have something good in them!

    I find the title sequence (NOT the pre-title sequence) totally irrelevant, except maybe the theme played over it. Don't get me wrong, I admire the art of Maurice Binder and who followed him, but it's mostly just a collection of nearly-nude women doing gymnastics stunts on gun barrels, really unimportant to what the movie is about. Almost the only thing I consider less relevant for the overall quality of the film is the "gun-barrel" intro. Frankly, for all the twenty-five films I haven't given a hoot about how both of those have been executed, as long as the movie's action added up.

    Couldnt disagree more! I always look forward to the titles sequence. Its an integral part of the Bond Universe, even if the theme song is dire, the titles are always worth a look!

    If that’s how you feel then I fully respect that. Personally I agree with @Mathis1, it’s an integral part of the Bond legacy for me. Moreover title sequence design is an art in itself and Bond has always been one of the standouts in this particular aspect of cinema.

    Anyway, to answer the question of @Creasy47, I think about keeping this one open to the end of the month. In which case we can start the countdown somewhere in the first week of February. So that gives everyone exactly a week to send me their rankings.

    Thanks for adding yours, @StirredNotShaken, could you copy your list and pm it to me as well? It’s easier for me to have them all together in one place :)

    An idle thought: NTTD features more of the song (12 seconds!) before the title sequence actually starts than any other film in the series (most films begin the title sequence in sync with the first note). I think GoldenEye is the only other film that comes even close. To me, and I'm sure anyone else here, the titles for NTTD start when the first dots appear alongside "ALBERT R. BROCCOLI'S EON PRODUCTIONS LTD Presents"; if you go by when the shot through the window of the train starts to actually rotate and dissolve into Kleinman's work, it's even longer.

    I would certainly say so, since that is also part of the design.

    For others who have already sent in their rankings, are you tackling these solely by the makeup and design of the title sequence or does your opinion on the song play into your rankings, as well?

    I find it hard to disconnect the two. I tried to exclude my appreciation for the music, but include how well music and titles match. For example: DAD's titles work bloody well with the song, even though the song itself is ... well, for Sigmund Freud to analyse.

    So do I, that's kind of my problem here. I'm trying to balance between judging how well they work together without letting my love (or dislike) of a song dictate my overall thoughts on the title sequence itself. It's tough.

    I'm debating just blocking them out, muting the sequences as I watch them, and ranking them solely on those alone. It seems more fair, because I'm bound to favor certain sequences that are weaker simply because I really love the title song.

    That’s what I did.
    I absolutely loathe Another Way To Die but really like the title sequence for QoS when watched on mute.
    Almost made my top 10 which surely would not have happened if I had watched it with the soundtrack on.

  • I considered just the visual presentation. I'd actually find it more difficult to rate them combined with the song.

    I've tried to focus on ideas & visual. My list is sent; That results in some entries that are in very different positions than the songs ranking.

    The song plays a part in the enjoyment of the total package, but some my least favourite title sequences contain some of my favourite songs, and vice versa, so obviously not a huge factor.
