I think Sam Mendes was still a critical darling at the time and the idea of criticising the film in the English press was just not going to happen.Mark Kermodes head was so up Mendes arse in his review “ THIS IS GREAT! THIS IS GREAT! “

Kermode hasn't properly been Kermode, since he stopped doing grossly exaggerated impressions of Danny Dyer. The PaedBC clearly had a word in his shell like. Dyer joins Eastenders, and suddenly Kermode stops his impressions.

Same here in Italy where Venice 78 is proving to the GA that going to the movies is safe, especially since here to enter a movie theater you must be vaccinated. Good news is that by the time NTTD will come out at least 80% of the total population will be.

If you have to get vaccinated to go to a movie, then it isn t very safe is it? Glad that sort of crap hasn t been implemented here. At least not yet.

Well that's still better than a trip to the hospital where 94% of italian COVID patients in ICU, struggling to survive, are not vaccinated.

EDIT: Following the massive success of Shang Chi now Venom 2 will come out in the US October 1st. Good for Bond as well.

Not necessarily good for Bond.It means Bond has more competition doesn’t it?

Venom 2 was supposed to come out one week after Bond. As I see things a less packed mid October is better for NTTD.

I agree — anything to let those legs stretch even more (conditional on the film being good!)
  • Well well well,it seems Simu liu running his mouth off is coming back to haunt him.Turns out he criticised China a few years ago in an interview for the Canadian broadcast company, and as a result it’s looking unlikely that Shang-Chi is getting a China release. Also the second weekend numbers are not looking good...

That -67% was a drop from the first Friday when compared to the second Friday, which isn't very abnormal. It made another $35.8 million for the weekend. A bit more of a dip than the average Marvel drop, but pretty good without China and slow theater going. I don't feel Liu spoke too soon and I'm not sure where all this Liu/Shang-Chi negativity is stemming from. The video, at the very least, is disengenious.

The China thing is something else, but I agree with Liu's comments about the People's Republic of China. Eternals might have the same problem as director Chloé Zhao has made similar comments.

It's a constant game with releasing movies in China, whether it be re-editing sections or just outright being banned. China has some pretty strict standards about what can be shown, visually and politically. The bottom line is Simu Liu and Chloé Zhao spoke their minds about how the PRC treats people and personally, I see nothing wrong with that. Marvel knew this when making these films and expected as much.

Looking at that youtuber’s list of content, seems to be just another fan agitator that @AstonLotus is addicted to. No different than other YouTube losers like Doomcock, Midnight’s Edge, and Nerdrotic.

All those YouTube channels have the same hyperaggressive thumbnails. Good tell whether or not they are a serious individual.

Shang-Chi had an estimated $38.5 million second weekend, with roughly 3.9 million tickets sold. That's not only the best second weekend of the pandemic era, but the best second weekend since Rise of Skywalker. It also had the 7th best second weekend drop out of all the Marvel films with 52.5%.

A little bit of news from the UK box office:

"In the first 24 hours customers booked as many seats at Vue cinemas as booked for Spectre in its first four and a half weeks. "

@Red_Snow I saw that in the article. From what I have seen (anecdotally) the screenings all local to me are are 65-70% sold and thats only going to increase. I think the film is going to absolutely explode on opening weekend.

    @Mallory That's fantastic news.

I fear it wont be the case here in Australia. Most people I know are seeking the "alternate" method of viewing, and if the film is good will go and see it at the cinema.

For reference, at the Australian box office:

    SPECTRE - $25.4 million
    Skyfall - $59.9 million
Quantum of Solace - $20.1 million
    Casino Royale - $25.3 million

Surprised at the gap between Skyfall and Spectre. Like SP is more than half of SF...

I don't recall how good/bad/mixed the reviews were, but it seems the Australian box office follows the good/bad/good/bad review pattern in terms of their viewing habits.

Even if it follows the pattern, I don't expect it to make as much as it could and should have. I don't know how comfortable people will feel returning to the cinema in key Australian markets, even if we have been locked down since June.

Pirating on home video is diminishing revenue for new movies to a degree more significant than ever before...disappointing.

Thank God the only thing available online will be a shitty cam recording.

Actually, no. Pirating is not comprised only of people sneakily recording the film as shown in a theater. Not nearly. There are films currently available from streamers that also are available without charge, online.

Considering this will be a theatrical only release, it's likely that the only version online to be pirated will be garbage cam quality for the time being.

Actually yes since NTTD will be a theaters only release for months and that means the only pirated files available online will be shitty cam recording, like it always have been for non season awards films before Covid.

Wow good grief yes of course once the film is available by VOD...at THAT point the film-makers will get robbed.

Even before then, no doubt, though I'd imagine most won't want their first viewing of the film to be some garbage quality cam version.

That’s the point. One thing is watch a film pirated in 4K day and date (like it will happen with Dune in the US) one thing is a trash copy filmed in a theater.

Wow...the demand for NTTD is huge here. Tickets went on sale 8 hours ago, and I don't think I have ever seen such a high demand for an opening weekend (Thu-Sun).

    FINALLY....it's happening:

NTTD ticket sales seem to be doing well at my closest theater when I check out the reserved seats.
