Exactly. This is what I always think about when I read about quarantine protestors, spring break, parties such as this...

But then, these morons become more likely to spread it to more vulnerable, more innocent people... and that's the real tragedy of the disease.

The US death-toll from coronavirus (currently 102,107) is expected to overtake the total US death-toll from WW1 (116,516) within the next 2 weeks.

Without trying to relativize, the figure of 116K WW I dead does not include the victims of the so-called "Spanish flu", which by the present U.S, administration's standards should probably be called the Kansas flu, does it? But it's still almost exactly the double of Vietnam U.S. casualties over about 15 years.

You are correct, it does not. 675,000 Americans died from the Spanish flu in 1918, on top of 116,516 US casualties during WW1.

Here, we are over the number of deaths of the 2003 heatwave. Twice over, in fact : (14802 in 2003, 28662 today).

Meanwhile, the de-lockdown is going on : our prime minister has announced the second phase, with openings of parks and gardens, no distance limits on travels, and repopening of cafés and restaurants (with movie theaters to follow). But the rules on social distancing at work and masks on buses and trains still apply.

This past week, 3.3 million US citizens registered to claim unemployment benefits. This is the all-time highest unemployment rate in US history. The previous record was set in 1982, when unemployment claims hit 695,000.

As feared, the global economy will be left in very, very bad shape from the coronavirus.
The US has once again obliterated their all-time highest unemployment rate, as this past week 6.6 million US citizens registered to claim unemployment benefits.

    https://edition.cnn.com/2020/04/02/economy/unemployment-benefits-coronavirus/index.html
A further 6.6 million US citizens have filed for unemployment benefits this past week. That makes for a total of 16 million jobs lost in the United States in the past 3 weeks. For comparison, the 2008 financial crisis accounted for a total 9 million jobs lost, over a much longer period (18 months).
Another 5.5 million US citizens have filed for unemployment benefits this past week. There is now a total of nearly 22 million jobs lost in the United States in the last month. This is nearly 32 times than the previous highest unemployment rate in U.S. history (695,000 jobless citizens in 1982).

    https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/jobless-claims-hovered-at-5-2-million-last-week-over-21-million-have-filed-for-unemployment-in-pandemic
Another 4.4 million US citizens have filed for unemployment benefits this past week. There is now a total of of 26.4 million jobs lost in the United States since the coronavirus outbreak begun. This means that more than 15% of the U.S. workforce are now unemployed. This is nearly 38 more times more than the previous highest unemployment rate in U.S. history.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/business-52398837
A further 3.8 million US citizens have filed for unemployment benefits this past week. There is now a total of over 30 million jobs lost in the United States since the coronavirus outbreak begun. This is over 43 times bigger than the previous highest unemployment rate in U.S. history (695,000 jobless citizens in 1982).

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/30/us-weekly-jobless-claims.html
Another 3.5 million US citizens have filed for unemployment benefits this past week. There is now a total of over 33.5 million jobs lost in the United States since the coronavirus outbreak begun. This is over 48 times bigger than the previous highest unemployment rate in U.S. history (695,000 jobless citizens in 1982).

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-economy/us-unemployment-rolls-seen-swelling-as-coronavirus-restrictions-bite-idUSKBN22J0HT
Another 3 million US citizens have filed for unemployment benefits this past week. There is now a total of over 36.5 million jobs lost in the United States since the coronavirus outbreak begun. One in four US workers are now unemployed. This is over 52 times bigger than the previous highest unemployment rate in U.S. history (695,000 jobless citizens in 1982).

    https://www.bbc.com/news/business-52664929
A further 2.4 million US citizens have filed for unemployment benefits this past week. There is now a total of nearly 39 million jobs lost in the United States since the coronavirus outbreak begun. This is over 56 times bigger than the previous highest unemployment rate in U.S. history (695,000 jobless citizens in 1982).

A further 2.1 million US citizens have filed for unemployment benefits this past week. There is now a total of nearly 41 million jobs lost in the United States since the coronavirus outbreak begun. Not really a surprise, but President Trump has stated that the U.S. Is Terminating Relationship with World Health Organization (WHO).

In other news, beginning on June 8th additional business in New York City will be allowed to re-open as deaths in the city continue to fall to their lowest levels since the COVID-19 situation started in mid-March. Many of the re-opened businesses will still be limited to “curb side” service for now. Where I live (Brooklyn), for example several more take-out joints have already re-opened (as did my favorite Dry Cleaner’s), but all have a “NO MASK / NO ENTRY” policy. Social distancing is also continues to be enforced.

What will be very interesting, is whether people will feel safe going back to work since so much of New York City is dependent on public transportation. If we could teleport from home to work (like Star Trek 😊) this wouldn’t be an issue. Personally, I have an important errand to run in the city next week that will require me to take the subway for the first time in two months. Nervous? You bet.

Wear a mask (of course) and gloves to hold the hanging straps/grab handles. I don't recommend sitting down.

The last thing the USA needed right now, in the middle of a pandemic, was massive country-wide riots. Expect the coronavirus cases & deaths to skyrocket across the US soon. 2020 is looking like a terrible year for everyone.

I have much to say on this sub-topic -- but I won't. Trying not to get political here. Let's just..... go for some nice, soothing music instead. Yeah, that's the ticket. Here's Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention from 1966 in response to the Watts riots. The more things change, the more they stay the same. "No way to delay, that trouble comin' every day."

Today, India recorded their biggest rise in new cases (8,305). And just now, the Indian government has decided to ease down the lockdown on June 8th. Fantastic idea in a country of over 1.3 billion people.

And before I forget: yesterday was the biggest daily word-wide rise in new cases (just over 125,000 new infections). So despite Asia and Europe seemingly over the 1st wave of the pandemic, the world-wide cases are increasing at never-seen rate since the pandemic started.

@DarthDimi South America (Brazil in particular recorded 29,526 new cases, Peru recorded 6,506 new cases, Chile recorded 3,595 new cases; 42,566 new cases in total on this continent), the USA (25,069 new cases), Russia (8,572 new cases) and India (8,105 new cases). Mexico, Iran Pakistan and Bangladesh are also looking critical, given their population density (3,377, 2,819, 2,801 and 2,523 new cases respectively).

Today, I discovered that post-lockdown rules were a bit stricter than during lockdown. Seems that wearing masks is now strongly advised in the local mall, and could soon become mandatory. On the other hand, the park I used as a shortcut to and from work is now open again (although it needs a lot of cleanup : it has become a real jungle).

We have to wear masks in public transport if you don't you get a 95 euro fine and if you were a medical certificated mask you get a fine too. Weird those Dutch rules.

Nothing weird about it. They are made up by clueless politicians, often following political negotiations between parties. What a freak show.
