I guess this color grading is in accordance with EON's artistic tendencies in the last decade. Whether we like it or not, Bond films will probably never be the same as before.

Is that shot of m and dench's m the same sequence?

    Yes.

I’m astonished about this merging timelines idea. Do you guys really believe EoN would do such a stupid, crazy, pointless move?

They made Blofeld Bond's Step Brother....so yes, they have been prone to some stupid, crazy, pointless moves post Skyfall. They also made DAD.

Blofeld is not Bond's step brother.

    Foster brother wasn't it?

Foster brother (for less than a year in total).

It was Hannes who asked Franz to treat little James as a "brother" for the brief period he stayed at their place.
    Nope, not even "foster brother".

Oberhauser's dad had temporary guardianship of l'il James for about a year. That's it.

I think that suavejmf's point was that making Bond and Blofeld childhood acquaintances was bad, regardless of the nature of their relationship.

Yes. We’re all aware of the technical relationship of the two in the film. But if EON didn’t want us to associate them as “brothers” they should have informed Waltz’s character because he sure as Hell mentions it a lot. That’s what gets in peoples’ craw; that they are jamming this instant brotherhood (by proxy) down our throats.

He just says that his father asked him to call him “brother” and then makes a joke about that in the interrogation room. Speaking in general, people seem to blow this brotherhood topic out of proportions since even Blofeld never cared about Bond as long as he started to mine his business.

When people say 'foster brothers' or 'step brothers' or 'Bond and and Blofeld are brothers', what's on their mind is not brotherhood in a literal sense of the word, it's the fact that Blofeld and Bond know each other since childhood. That very thing is what some of us (or many of us) find ridiculous. Personally, I think it's the worst idea in the Bond franchise, a badly written fan fiction.

The term 'brother' is just the easier way of saying 'they know each other since they were children'.

It's been explained so many times, it's hard for me to believe some people still don't get it.

Unless, of course, we finally find that Bond was courted and recruited at a young age because of his early ties to the Oberhausers. Then, thematically and dramatically, this will all start to make sense.

The themes of the DC era are really about determinism and duality. Both of these come to the fore with Madeleine. In the bedroom scene, she says to him, "There are two of you. Two Jameses." That is not a throwaway line. Neither is the part in the dinner car when Bond says he never really had a "choice" in terms of his life. She disagrees.

I am perfectly fine with a deep dive, in this regard.

The look of a certain movie is usually the call of the director and cinematographer and not the producers. And the last three movies looked entirely different:
-QoS: probably my favorite color palette. Vibrant and natural looking. Sadly you miss it, if you blink.
-SF: Heavily graded in some parts (teal: Skyfall mansion exterior; orange: the casino). Great overall palette. Deakins framing and use of cove light probably makes SF the most pleasing to look at, IMO.
-SP: On paper this could have been the most wonderful looking, but all vibrance was pulled out of the Mexico-scenes, the snow in Austia looked more green than white, the exterior Morroco-scenes, like the Mexico-scenes, lacked punch, and too many scenes have shadows lifted too high, IMO. A mess.
    - NTTD: Back to the teal and orange look it seems.

Not trying to be sardonic....but i believe the trailer did say it will change everything.....maybe that includes the color grading as well....amongst other things we might still see in the film....and at this point, am not even surprised anymore....coz the Craig era is renowned for deconstructing & constructing, sometimes to good effect....I can't say I will be surprised if Craig's Bond orders a bottle of Pepsi in NTTD.

A personal theory I’ve had for ages is that Dench’s M, before she became M, had been keeping an eye on what became Spectre for ages, which got her to seek Bond out for recruitment

My expectations went down after the new spot confirms that NTTD will have a lot of teal grading (also called the 'blockbuster look' because most action blockbusters are graded this way). The extreme grading in large parts of SP ruined it for me. What's wrong with a natural look these days? Here's Mona Lisa in the hands of the industry:

Haven’t had a chance yet to click through your article but Mad Max: Fury Road comes to mind instantly. Maybe it’s Hollywood trickery but man that movie was gorgeous both in black and white and in vivid colour.

I couldn’t care less what’s on hundred people’s mind regarding this topic. Saying Bond is his step brother is just wrong. Incorrect. Simple as that.
Brother or no brother. It’s still a stupid idea. The kid you played in the playground with when you were little wasn’t your brother (maybe not even a close friend) but you still don’t expect him to grow up and become the “author of all your pain”. In the old days Bond and villain didn’t have any personal connections. It’s a stupid fad these days which needs to go away, not be excused or justified.

    Couple of comments/questions
    1. I know Fukunaga mentioned this movie dealing with legacy which could explain our current M looking distraught at Dench's M like he is failing her legacy. as someone cleverly theorised in a previous post. The callbacks to Dr. No and Die Another Day might also be playing around with the idea of the Bond film franchise legacy and it's pressure.
    2. Would anyone be able to tell me what Bond is doing in that shot when he walks out with the gun. I can't quite catch the movement?
    3. Loving this footage.

    2. Looks like he's walking out of the Cuba party (?) and either pulling out the folding stock or loading a round/magazine into his weapon. (I believe it's an ARX-160, which has a grenade launcher attached.)

    Thanks! Much appreciated.

That's a textbook example on so many levels. Here teal and orange was a natural choice because of the warm earth tones and stark cool blues (day for night shots). It was perfect. But simply slapping a teal and/or orange grade on almost everything, especially interior scenes, turning everything that is white into teal, like a wall, door, clothes... no, no, no.

Guess they had a change of heart luckily, judging from the new TV spot, where the white mask is in fact white, and not teal like in the original trailer. More of that.

I think there are far more egregious examples of teal/orange usage than that seen in NTTD. Blue appears to be used very consciously in this film - Craig’s blue shirt in Matera, his blue jumper in the lair, his dark blue shirt in Jamaica and blue tie (and latterly suit) in London, Safin’s blue jacket, Ana’s blue dress in Cuba, Nomi’s dark blue tactical suit - from memory, there’s probably more. Even with the poster colouring, blue features across the board to some degree.

I’m perfectly fine with the Bond films taking artistic license with color grading. I’m certainly much happier with how Bond films look compared to other blockbusters like certain Marvel titles.

I don’t actually mind the teal and orange trend - to a point. It’s been around for ages and is part of the language of modern blockbuster cinema. It’s no less distracting than Peter hunts chopping of frames or obvious stunt doubles driving half a Renault in Paris 🙈

I do think Spectre looked awful though in the colour department.
