Great conversations going on here about Dalton and Brosnan perspectives, many of which I share as well, if I may add some thoughts.

I live in the U.S. and ever since Brosnan made his debut in Remington Steele in '82, he was practically anointed the next Bond, at least over here, as I understand he didn't have as high a profile in other countries. It's understandable in that the Steele character really echoes The Saint a lot and Roger was still Bond then.

While I liked him okay, I just didn't see him as Bond, worried he'd be like another Moore and was one of the few who was relieved when he remained contracted still to Steele and Dalton got the call. There was just something about Dalton I thought was right and from the first time I saw him in footage on the tram in Bratislava was proven right. So I was also very disappointed when he left/was pushed, opening the door for Brosnan to reenter.

Although naturally thrilled to have the series back, I also wasn't wowed by GE. It was just very paint by numbers, despite the reboot push to reestablish the character for the times. It's still one of my least watched of the series. I thought TND was such an improvement despite using the old avert WWIII plotline. It still felt fresh and remains my favorite of the Brosnans.

The thing I've said many times with Brosnan's Bond is since he was the anointed one we got exactly what was asked for, thus making him less fresh than a Dalton or Craig, who at least brought something different to the role instead of the composite Bond, which Brosnan basically was and didn't help when he wanted to do more character exploration in TWINE and DAD. It just didn't work.

It was tough being on forums back in the day when Brosnan was still in the role as it was like being an endangered species to like Dalton, the man who allegedly killed the series, as was the perspective at the time, even by non-fans.

Just started watching DOOM PATROL. If you had told me in the '60s that these characters would ever warrant a television show, well, I would have thought not. Dalton is excellent as Chief Niles Caulder.

I heard someone at work give this high praise.

Excellent post. GE must be the most overrated entry of the entire series. Totally inexplicable.

Completely agree about TND as well. Hands down Brosnan's 'best'. Totally flops towards the end but some solid stuff in there. Had they cast Monica Bellucci as Paris as intended and had they used Surrender as the title song it would have been even better.

And Anthony Hopkins as Elliot Carver, would make it even better. Although I like Jonathan Pryce.

Hopkins would have been a nice touch but Pryce does okay

    Nice one!
I still have clear .memories of seening it on opening weekend. It was a scorching Summers day, (There was also a General election that week...dont know why I remember that...probably to do with one candidate saying in an interview he was going to go and see the new Bond movie to get away from the count!!)

Haven't watched Doom Patrol but noticed that Dalton plays a wheelchair bound superhero mentor. Shades (heavily) of Patrick Stewart in X-Men.

A shame Dalton has never quite had the chance to return to the A-list after Bond. Always bobbing around in not quite very good TV etc.

    I wouldn't say that...

That's probably the most prestigious thing he's done since Bond.

His career is pretty lame to be honest.

And I'm a big fan of his Bond

He steals everything he's in as a supporting actor, but doesn't seem to do lead roles.

Dalton was in Hot Fuzz, IMO the funniest buddy cop action/comedy since 2000. The only improvement/change I'd made about this film is to add Brosnan (rather than having him in The World's End). The thought of Brosnan & Dalton ripping themselves apart through banter is salivating.

Dalton, bein g so good, does tend to steal movies. Hot Fuzz being a case on point.
There was also a Western called American Outlaws, with Colin Farrell, that Dalton was the best thing in it! That movie with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, whose name escapes me, Tim was the only good thing about it!

The World's End is good for nostalgia reasons, reminds me of pub crawls from the 90's

Ah yes, thats it, The Tourist. It was supposed to be one the big movies that year, but was a big turkey.
Dalton was the only one to make an impression!

I remember it being sold as a Hitchcock type film, Depp and Jolie were dreadful

I would never say Tim’s career outside Bond is unimpressive. An outstanding debute in The Lion in Winter, swashbuckling fun in Flash Gordon, devilishly amusing in The Rocketeer, hilarious in Hot Fuzz and horror art in Penny Dreadful. He’s also in Toy Story 3 and 4, though I don’t know much about his contribution in the latter one.

I found it a bit cringey, because I often feel like the less successful one in my friend group, constantly badgering people with proper jobs and families and responsibilities to come out and booze :(

I saw this in the cinema. I can't remember a thing about it! (It came out the year I visited Venice with a friend, so I dragged her to see it for a laugh.)

:) You're right, of course. Nobody in my friend group knows as much about James Bond as I do, for instance!

wow-- cheezy flick, but Dalton was fun in that scene!... Plus he looked damn good-- and this was 12 years after TLD???

He could have played Bond for as long as Roger (if not more), and looked fantastic doing it.
