One of the best Bond films ever made. I love Largo more than most as well.

It's definitely grown on me. The first time I saw it was in '67 at the drive-in as a second feature to YOLT (because it was the new one, it ran first). After really enjoying YOLT my sister and I got pretty bored in THUNDERBALL and made my mother take us home (I was 5). It still is the first Bond film not to be a total home run for me, but it has crept up to # 8 in my rankings. And I enjoy almost all of the underwater stuff. I consider it the last time we get to see Connery in classic Bond form.

I agree almost completely! I've always really enjoyed it but it is one that simply moves up and up every time. And Connery is in ultra cool mode here, as in Goldfinger.

I certainly agree that TB is where Connery's last truly great moments in the role are. Now, he sort of redeems himself in DAF with some very finely executed one-liners and classic Bond Moments, but his age was showing by 1971, as was his out-of-shape body, in which obvious would be an understatement!

Shall we? Grand. A total of 14 participants, which is not too shabby. I always like to have a more diverse cross section anyway, to give the combined scores some respectability, cutting through the Bond fandom. (yes, 14 is enough!)

    Thunderball - 77.47%

I'm glad. I know Thunderball isn't too everyone’s taste, so I'm reasonably satisfied.

    Let's see how Thunderball racks up to our provisional ratings, Casino Royale is far and away our current leader, nearly ten points clear of second place which is GoldenEye(!);

    Casino Royale - 87.85%
    GoldenEye - 78.94%
    Dr No- 78.7%
    The Living Daylights - 78.61%
    Thunderball - 77.47%
    Goldfinger - 77.23%
    Skyfall - 75.4%
    A View To A Kill - 72.22%
    Moonraker - 67.4%
The Man With The Golden Gun - 61.33%
    Diamonds Are Forever - 56.05%

Just ahead of Goldfinger - where it should be ;-)

And now time for some actual discussion:

Is it higher/lower than your own ratings?

Personal % - 80. Community % - 77.47. Lower. In fact I expected Thunderball to do much better than that, my own personal ratings. Looking at my own rankings, Thunderball is ahead of TLD, SF and GF, but not so in this empirical test.

What is your favourite category/element/thing in the film?

Sean Connery without a doubt. So virile, so sophisticated and so very machismo.

What surprised you the most, while reading other peoples ratings?

The score was the most delightfully surprising - only a few deviants gave the score low-ish marks. Another top quality effort by John Barry.

Feel free to comment! Another Bond film coming soon...

Is it higher/lower than your own ratings?

My rating was 80%, which is higher than I expected- granted, TB and FRWL are the two favorite Connery outings for me, so I can see why my rating is so high, but I wasn't expecting an 80%. I thought somehwere in the upper '70s, at best.

What is your favourite category/element/thing in the film?

For me, it's either the action sequences or the location work. Thunderball has some great action scenes in lavish, exotic scenery spread out over its 2 hour 5 minutes time slot. Also, and as @royale65 stated, Connery is in prime form with his fourth adventure.

What surprised you the most, while reading other peoples ratings?

I was a little surprised at the "mixed bag" consensus- I expected TB to be somewhat unanimously high-ranked, since it's a '60s Connery Bond movie, which seem to do very well around here, typically.

Me-thinks it is time for another Bond film!!!

    Tomorrow Never Dies

    1. Direction - 8 (until the last third Spottiswoode delivers a slick, pacy film)
    2. Screenplay - 8 (action overload in the final third)
    3. Script - 8
    4. Plot - 8 (nice updating of YOLT and Spy plots)
    5. Action - 8
    6. Main Villain - 8
    7. Main Bond Girl - 8
    8. Bond - 9 (yes, so sue me)
    9. Sets - 7 (the stealth boat is rather underwhelming)
    10. Music - 9 (Arnold is on top form here)
    11. Cinematography - 8 (an improvement on GE)
    12. Fleming - 7

    13. Supporting Cast - 3 (minus marks for Hatcher)
    14. Main Titles - 3
    15. Plausibility - 3
    16. Pace - 5
    17. Editing - 4
    18. Tilt - 4

    118/150 = 78.66%

Remember the first twelve categories are out of 10, and the latter six are out of 5

These are my personal ratings -

    Casino Royale - 92.66%
    Dr No - 87.3%
    The Living Daylights - 86.66%

    Thunderball - 80%
    Tomorrow Never Dies - 78.66%
    GoldenEye - 74.66%
    Moonraker - 73.3%
    A View To A Kill - 66%
    Diamonds Are Forever - 62.66%
The Man With The Golden Gun - 62%

    and my rankings -

    22. The Man With The Golden Gun
    20. Moonraker
    19. A View To A Kill
    15. GoldenEye
    13. Tomorrow Never Dies
    11. Goldfinger
    9. Skyfall
    8. Dr No
    7. The Living Daylights
    5. Thunderball
    3. Casino Royale

Not too bad. Ahead of GE, but below the classic films like TB, TLD and SF. Which is in line with my rankings.

    @royale65: You picked a mighty good'un here!

    1. Direction - 7
    2. Screenplay - 7
    3. Script - 9 (highly memorable dialogue; some rather great lines here!)
    4. Plot - 10 (a good way to bring the YOLT/TSWLM plot into the '90s with relevance and originality)
    5. Action - 10 (one of the most action-packed Bond adventures ever!)
    6. Main Villain - 8 (Carver is underrated, in my opinion; except for a very few over-the-top cheesy instances, like the kung fu, he's pretty menacing in a unique way)
    7. Main Bond Girl - 3 (Paris and Wai Lin are an awful set of Bond Girls)
    8. Bond - 10 (the good ol' Brosnan Bias at work ;) )
    9. Sets - 10 (the Stealth Ship is superb!)
    10. Music - 7
    11. Cinematography - 10 (Hamburg, Saigon, and the South China Sea are stunning)
    12. Fleming - N/A

    13. Supporting Cast - 2 (Paris is terrible, that British Admiral guy is annoying, Henry Gupta is forgettable, and General Chang, despite his importance in the plot, is only seen once- incredibly briefly; the only perks here go to the return of the epic Jack Wade and the somewhat threatening henchman Stamper, though even he can be really corny at times)
    14. Main Titles - 1 (this one is included in my "Hit the Next Scene Button on the DVD Remote" Club; I've never liked Sheryl Crow's title song, frankly- "Surrender" is much better)
    15. Plausibility - 4 (the whole conflict between Britain and China seems very reasonable and likely; it seemed well backed-up and justified)
    16. Pace - 5 (one of those "Blink and You'll Miss It" Bond movies!)
    17. Editing - 3 (seems a little rough in places, particularly places where a scene had been deleted or highly cut, such as when Bond grabs that deck officer from behind on the Stealth Ship)
    18. Tilt - 5 (one of my personal favorites)

    111/140 = 79%

    My Ratings Thus Far:

    GoldenEye- 97%
    SkyFall- 85%
    Thunderball- 80%
    Tomorrow Never Dies- 79%
    The Living Daylights- 79%
    A View to a Kill- 78%
    Casino Royale- 78%
The Man with the Golden Gun- 71%
    Diamonds Are Forever- 70%
    Dr. No- 66%
    Moonraker- 61%
    Goldfinger- 55%

A movie you must learn to like. I have seen the movie i think 14 times or so in 17 years.

Carver is be one of my favorite villians. In Dominic Green i also see some of Carver and i like the very subtil reference from M to Carver's idea of TMND in Skyfall tv spot who never be used in the final movie. This be of those Skyfall symbol that i believe that plot of TMND or better said Carver Legacy/Ghost wil return.

Egads! Below AVTAK. Well well. The highest participant was @M_Balje with 122/150, and the lowest was @Birdleson with 85.

And now time for some actual discussion:

Is it higher/lower than your own ratings?

Personal % - 78ish. Community % - 70.20. Lower. TND is a good, if not spectacular film, that falls apart in the final third.

What is your favourite category/element/thing in the film?

    The Brozz for sure.

What surprised you the most, while reading other peoples ratings?

The generally low marks it was afforded by everyone. I didn't expect AVTAK to beat it for sure. Still, it's only 5% behind SF.

Feel free to comment! Another Bond film coming soon...

    Lower.

    Community: 70.20%.
    My rating: 76.6%

What is your favourite category/element/thing in the film?

Brosnan's performance, which is great- much better than the previous film, and perhaps on par with DAD. The action is great and the gadgets are top notch. Wai Lin is an awesome Bond girl. The PTS and 'Surrender' are among the absolute best of their respective categories. The Kaufman scene is excellent.

What surprised you the most, while reading other peoples ratings?

No surprises here. What I expected.
Brosnan is cool and confident in this one all the way, free of some of the "new jitters" that hindered him a bit in GE. However, I liked his more restrained GE performance as well.

Is TND higher/lower than your own ratings?

It's higher in my personal rankings, but lower in the ratings.

What is your favourite category/element/thing in the film?

Brosnan, the action, Elliot Carver, and the locations

What surprised you the most, while reading other peoples ratings?

I truthfully expected more negative reviews than generally positive ones, so that was a nice surprise!
