I don’t think JJ will ever come back after TROS. He ended up making a movie everyone can agree was below par. I personally enjoyed it in theaters, but I do agree that it ranks among the weakest of the saga.

I thought he showed he didn't really have the feel for it, to be honest. Some nice ideas but they didn't really translate to a good film.
I'm more interested in James Mangold's one- he has the sensibility for this sort of entertainment.

I think the circumstances were the problem. He had to follow up someone else's story meanwhile wanting to do something original and being tired of the same "family story" and recicling of tropes from the previous films which the fans were craving. Although I agree the result wasn't great, I do appreciate he at least tried to shake things up. I think he could make something very good with a clean slate and without limitations.

Yes, I think it got way too much hatred directed at it: it's perfectly serviceable and does what a SW film should do. It's not great, but it's not as bad as you'd think if you read what people say online.
I'm sure you're right and Abrams won't do another, but he was rather terrific at directing Force Awakens and Star Trek, both of which I think are fantastic adventure movies.

I think the story is probably where he succeeded to be honest, in as far as the innovations he tried to bring with Rey not being related to anyone, the new Jedi hinted at at the end etc. but he just didn't have the SW sensibility for directing the individual scenes if you ask me: the jokes weren't funny, the characters became charmless after being so likeable in Abrams' film. Regardless of the story, he just couldn't direct Star Wars, for my money. Then he stuck it on a dreary island for most of the time, with the characters stuck in two locations (rather than zipping around the galaxy) and it actually became boring.
Plus the sort of slap-in-face cheap gags like Luke throwing the lightsaber over his shoulder broke the spell of SW a bit for my money: you have plenty of jokes but you don't mock the mysticism and grandeur of it otherwise it falls apart.

I'm not a weird fan who was annoyed he killed Luke or whatever: I thought that was a solid plot idea. But I just found it boring and charmless, where Force Awakens was light and funny and exciting.

Yes he could. I know Rian Johnson said he would at least direct the first movie of his trilogy. I'm looking forward to all the movies that are in development though. I'm glad certain ones like Kevin Feige's and the Game of Thrones creators were scrapped, they aren't in creative highs, honestly. Rumor has it Taika Waititi will film his movie next year. I'm kind of mixed about it.

I love TROS. It's popcorn entertainment, exactly what I want SW to be. I wasn't too fond of TLJ. And neither comes close to the awesomeness of RO in my opinion. If there's one film series that I don't mind plugging up the holes from the past, it's SW. I even liked Solo more than most, it seems. These "Star Wars Stories" were a good idea if you ask me. I'd rather have more of those than another trilogy. Then again, whatever SW brings, I'm having it.

I think the uproar against Disney's involvevement in Star Wars is a little odd honestly. Fans seem to pretend the original trilogy consisted of impeccable masterpieces. It didn't. The success of Star Wars was always about the world and the mythos, much less about the quality of the earlier films who are enjoyable and full of nostalgia and cult qualities, but definitely flawed. Based on that it's odd to be against more stories being made within the franchise. We need to accept that not all of it will be great. That's just how showbiss works. Some will be good, some will be bad, but by all means, please continue making them!

Same here! I trust the filmmakers in charge! Don’t be afraid to experiment a bit.

I agree. I also think that our fan-favourite TESB has led people to believe that SW is about dark, Shakespearean dramas, when that film is rather the odd one, in my opinion. It's a great film, don't get me wrong. It just set expectations that were barely ever matched. I think SW is about popcorn entertainment. Imperfect? Sure! Is that a problem? No! We're talking about evil empires, old men in hoods wielding sabers of light, little green gremlins speaking words of wisdom, a cut dog-bear who shoots a crossbow and flies a spaceship, two funky droids, ...

    I mean... ;-)

Yeah a lot of people have a very simplistic view. 'It's Disney so there won't be any x or x'. I like Indiana Jones and I see a load of people 'huff, it's Disney so he'll never fire a gun or punch anyone and it'll all be about WOMEN helping him' which is clearly a load of old rubbish.
Disney are a too-massive and slightly sinister corporation, but that doesn't mean that they don't hire artists who want to make the best things that they can.

I suppose that's part of it. They are afraid they will turn every SW production into Cinderella ;)

    Disney Star Wars...

    The Good...
    Rogue One
The Force Awakens gets better with time certainly in comparison to the other 2 Sequel Trilogy films.
Mando S1 and S2 and the Mando episodes in The Book of Boba Fett
    Andor
    Tales of the Jedi

Everything else IMO is pretty poor or I just gave up on for example The Bad Batch just was not for me.

I have still not watched Clone Wars Final Season so I class the show as pre Disney, Rebels was mixed though despite owning all the series on Bluray I forget what years they were released.

I liked TFA, TLJ, Mando, and Obi-Wan.

That’s about it. To be fair, I’m not really interested in the other shows.

I measure it by 'what SW made in this century do I need to own because I'll definitely watch it more than twice more?' So far, that's ROTS, Solo, Rogue One, Andor, and Mandalorian seasons 1 & 2. The rest is one-watch only for me.

I should probably give Solo another go, I have only watched it maybe twice, though I have played the kessel run scene several times in isolation. Time I suspect will be kind to Solo based on some of the content that followed.

I thought it was bags of fun, I never saw the problem with it. It peeters out a bit by the climax, but it’s an enjoyable watch.

It's not a bad film. You will have to 'forget' Ford and Williams, of course, but that aside, it's a small but fun adventure.

It strikes me as odd that Lucasfilm is going ahead with a Rey movie after all the backlash her character, and the sequels had received.

I’m not sure, TROS wasn’t exactly the hit Disney/Lucasfilm were hoping for, especially in comparison to TFA. This just seems like another announcement for a film that might not ever happen.

Because they were only ever a minority of fans shouting on social media. Much like how the Star Wars prequels weren’t this abomination fandom/Film Twitter swore it was to the general movie-going public for years. Audiences liked them fine.

I wouldn’t call them a minority of fans though. Annoying? Yeah, I’d make that argument. But clearly all the moaning online had some effect because each sequel film earned less than its predecessor, just like all their moaning online is affecting Indy’s box office, so I have trouble seeing the financial incentive for Disney in creating a film centered around the lead character of the sequels.

I like Daisy Ridley as an actress, so I’m not exactly opposed either. I don’t think she was given the best material to work with, but neither did any of the Sequel, or even Prequel actors.

I think you underestimate these moaners honestly. Hell knows no wrath like a Nerd’s fury, and these people have been doing the same thing on YouTube since 2017, and if anything just continue to grow in support, especially when people have more time and access to YouTube than they would a movie theater in some cases.

Rey was badly written by all accounts, but Ridley deserves a crack at the character again. She was very good.

I really enjoyed Rey and the energy she brought to TFA. I thought her, Finn and Poe such great characters for the new trilogy. TLJ failed to deliver that same great energy but still gave Rey a number of really awesome moments. In the end, Rey was a cool character and I hope to someday see more of Daisy Ridley in the part.
