Please bring back the 'husband and wife' from the tube in Bond 24!

edited July 2013 in SPECTRE Posts: 11,119
Where I saw 'Skyfall' in cinemas, the public turned into laughter after the old man of the couple says: "He seems to be in a hurry!?" I loved it. Let's dedicate this topic to this fantastic British couple and let's hope EON brings the couple back.

For your information:
Actress Jo Cameron Brown played the wife.
Actor Anthony O'Donnell played the husband

Why don't they bring back Sheriff J.W. Pepper? Clifton James is still alive.

Why not the couple I mentioned above? Roger Moore had the guy with the bottle of wine. Let Craig have the husband and wife :).

Pepper is something different. That's an entire role, not a cameo.

    No to both suggestions.

I do not remember the couple to be honest.

Better still, give them their own movie spin-off as they were such comedy gold. It must be a slow day at the office for you to come up with that suggestion, @Graves.

Have you seriously gone batshit mental?

Apologies due to hullcityfan because when I saw this thread title I naturally assumed it was another one of his inspired ideas.

No, leave them out of it.

  • The couple and that line always got a big laugh in the cinema, but do we really want to go back to the joke cameo appearances of the 70's when they had that guy with the bottle of booze?

Seems like such a discreet thing to have a huge discussion about in terms of returning. It gave me a good chuckle, but yes, leave the 70's how they were and don't bring back these joke cameos.

As there were in the final film, some thought it was 70's enough as it was. If anything, we need less of that in the next film. My opinion, of course. Keep changing it up.

I thought they were funny but bringing them back would just seem forced and unnecessary IMO.

Anyone remember Spy Hard when they re-used the couple from True Lies who were in the elevator?

Bugger that lets call the pigeon from MR's agent!

I really cannot believe some of the threads people come up with on here.

I think the most tragic thing about this is the 'please' in the title. Sounds as if Gustav_Graves isn't just throwing it out there but actually imploring EON to make it happen.
  • I thought the scene with these two was a great laugh out loud moment that had been sorely lacking in QOS, but I don't see the need for the past to be revisited so that Craig can have his own foil.

    A) This couple had, I think, 3 seconds screentime out of 137 minutes movie. How the hell can this look 'forced' and 'unnecessary'.
    B) This amount of humour is so not influencing the outcome of the entire film. Actually, it made SF the funniest films out of three Bond films for Craig.

There was nothing wrong with the scene - it was a nice homage to Rog era films and a good moment of lightness in quite a dark film.

But you seem to be advocating signing these actors up on a multi picture deal which is just insane. Did you not think the Peppers in Thailand was bad enough that we need to see this pair popping up all over the globe?

It not the point of the actual screen time they would get, having them reappear at all would be crap. Most likely cringe-worthy but most certainly unoriginal. I don't mind a little silly laugh occasionally but this has cheesy written all over it.

How could you concevably fit them into the action in a believable way? You get into parody territory if you do stuff like this - like the Moore films did in the 70s. As a one off moment of humour on its own it worked brilliantly because they were just random passengers who witnessed something highly unusual. But I just don't see how it could work in another film without it feeling like a deliberate gimicky attempt to make the viewers laugh.

Again, please see this couple as a cameo like the one Victor Tourjanski had as 'the man with the bottle of wine' in three of Moore's Bond films:

I just don't see the 'damage' in bringing back the 'couple from the Tube'. It's like bringing back other cameo's, like actor Tom So (Fukutu in 'Casino Royale' and 'Skyfall') or Lenny Rabin ('Goldfinger', 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service', 'The Spy Who Loved Me', 'For Your Eyes Only' & 'Octopussy'....making him appear in Bond movies with 3 different Bond actors):

Also, do not forget that the producers/directors usually add these cameo's for their own fun ánd for the fun of fans. Producers/directors in a way are as nerdy as we Bond fans are. They also add some continuity in the Bond films. And a cameo from the 'husband and wife from the tube' in Bond 24 has no negative impact at all on the entire movie. On the contrary.....they make the public laugh.

Please, don't bring them back. They felt like they had been torn out of Bond c.1979 and forced into Bond c.2012.

Seriously I don't want them back but really it wasn't that big a deal, it was a nice little homage to the Moore films, was it really a deal breaker? the way some of you speak you'd think it had ruined the film.

Lets face it the Dalton films weren't exactly without this kind of humour, what's the problem with the Craig era dipping it's toe this kind of thing?

If Mendes does come back then expect something along these line but as to recurring characters like JW & the bloke with the wine, no thanks.

These are Bond films when all said and done, some of you need to stop getting so precious about this.

Have to say I love, love, love "the man with the bottle of wine" (especially the fact that he's cut down to just a glass in FYEO!) - his repeated appearance across major Italian tourist attractions just as Bond is engaged in some improbable stunt is a wonderful little easter egg for fans that works perfectly as a one-shot gag for new viewers. There are many examples of excessive and inappropriate humour in the Bond films of the 70s and 80s but the man with the bottle of wine is not one of them. It's a genuinely good joke, well-performed.

How anyone can compare him to J.W. Pepper is beyond me. Pepper plays a significant (and noisy) role in the two biggest set pieces of the early 70s, dominating the screen to the extent that he's actually featured in the trailers (heavily so in the case of TMWTGG) and racks up more screen-time in those films than M, Q, and Moneypenny combined. The man with the bottle of wine has no dialogue, no name and features for, what, maybe 8 seconds of screen time in total?[/quote]

I just don't see the 'damage' in bringing back the 'couple from the Tube' [...] a cameo from the 'husband and wife from the tube' in Bond 24 has no negative impact at all on the entire movie. On the contrary.....they make the public laugh.
Sign me up as a supporter for this idea. I saw SF 4 times at the cinema and they got a huge laugh each time. An unobtrusive mute cameo in the next film would do no harm if well-executed (and likely not be noticed by 90% of the audience.)

Hell, I'll throw it out there - bring Tourjanski back for a two-second cameo in Bond 24!

You go down an unnecessary route with this I reckon? The humour is getting better, they have had their moment and I cannot see DC going down the Moore route?

Let's be honest, the delivery of the line 'He's keen to get home' is about as wooden as Scandinavian housing. It's not helped by the fact Craig follows it up with a perfectly executed one-liner. Don't get me wrong, I smiled the first time I saw it, but perhaps that was due to the fact the crowd at the premiere lapped it up. In reality it's pretty naff, leave it to Craig to add some humour, he's actually pretty good at it. This is from an avid Moore fan.

    Exactly.

Okay, their line made us laugh in the theatre. But ... moving on now, no need to bring them back; that I would not like. Bond can carry on well without them.

I disagree. The fact that the audience was laughing says enough. It's perhaps not your style to do this, or the way a Bond fan would approach humour. But non-fans actually liked it. I also was surprised to hear the audience laughing about this line.....and especially about the look of the metro machinist (Reminds me of the drunk man in Venice who sees a coffin in the canal, 'Moonraker'). But the audience loved it.

    I think that's important no?
