Something I put by mistake in another thread : I don't care what Michael Apted said, Renard is the main villain in TWINE. And even though he came short, his name is really cool.

A classic case of lost potential to me. Good actor, quite interesting character background and yet it turned out like a dull soap opera for some reason... Speaks for the film in general I guess.

Not so much soap opera as Agatha Christie, when a twist is brought in for its sake, regardless of characters believability.

I find Peter's criticism quite appropriate...and that doesn't change a bit just because you are also right about Agatha Christie (and others). Marvelously spoofed in Murder by Death. But a Bond movie shouldn't be soap opera, while Agatha always has a certain bit of that in it.
  • Renard is one of the worst villains, totally forgettable, and it's a shame because Carlyle is a talented actor.

Elektra King should have been the main villain, I wonder if they were a bit scared to have a woman be the main villain so they had to force Renard in there.

They should have given her an imposing henchman to actually be a physical threat to Bond if King couldn't be it herself. Her henchmen in the movie also suck.

All TWINE movie haters, I have a solution for you. Just stick with the N64 version if you can. Like Goldeneye, it's better than the movie. That's rare.

I'm actually not a TWINE hater, but boy are the flaws big. I have nostalgia for the film though, because I grew up with Brosnan and I also played the game endlessly.

GE on the other hand still holds up for me very well. One of my favorites.

I've never been a fan of DAD, though. Not even when it came out.

TWINE is weaker than a pint of Foster's. Even with DAD in the mix, it's still Brosnan's worst Bond film. Boring action, sloppy melodrama a 'twist' that is so obvious a five year old could see it a mile off.

I'm a self confessed TWINE hater. I have been since the day of release, when I walked out of the theatre a very disappointed and dejected person. I'm glad that experience is in the distant past.

Agatha Christie is not as much soap opera as gossip with cyanide. And to be fair to TWINE, Agatha Christie’s twists are often seen on tv and movies. But it was more blatant with Elektra.

@MaxCasino I’m not a hater. I just think it’s one of the most frustrating Bond movies.

Me, too...except that I'm always very reluctant to use the terms "hate" or "hater". It is a fact that when first watching DAD, I was kind of elated after the first half that was so much better than TWINE (certain scenes excluded). But boy, was I wrong when the second half came. It is this broken promise that keeps DAD at the very bottom of my ranking...albeit only 1/10 below TWINE.

I can relate. I have DAD above TWINE because it is indeed far more entertaining and interesting in the first half. Like you, I admit that I thought we were in for a decent film during that earlier portion. Sadly, it was not to be.

I agree on the 'hater' term too. It's very one dimensional and hate is not an emotion I'm prone to. My comment was intended to be tongue in cheek and sarcastic, since the term was used above.

Oh boy! I have TWINE above DAD for the sole reason that it is not DAD. I still (very slightly) prefer TWINE to TND in fact, as long as I forget that Michael Apted said Elektra is the main villain. Because Renard is creepier, because he is a terrorist and not another tycoon turned amateur criminal, because Bond appears overall more in danger than in TND.

It’s funny but I got to TWINE last night with my friend on our big Bond rewatch and we both agreed it was our favourite Brosnan Bond. By a long shot.

Neither of us are big Brosnan fans (as Bond) but after being bored through GE & TND, we actually really enjoyed this one.

That's a controversial opinion. May I ask why you enjoyed it more?

I really like the story. I think it is Brosnan's best performances as Bond, and that is saying a lot when I am really not a fan of his Bond. Apart from 1 to 2 sequences I think the action is quite well done, I like the relationship between Bond and Elektra, between Renard and Elecktra and I appreciated the relative restraint of the usual juvenile humor that pervaded the Brosnan era.

I really am not a fan of Goldeneye, I think it is very overrated, but I do understand why some people have a sentimental attachment to it to it to it being their first Bond, and others because it was the first Bond after such a big gap. But that, TLD and DAD would be in the bottom end of my Bond list.

That is a controversial opinion, I will give you that. The reason I prefer DAD to TWINE is for pretty much the same reasons @bondjames said. The only scene in TWINE I enjoyed was Bond gunning down Elektra. That was pure Fleming. The rest was pure EastEnders.

Peter Segal of Tommy Boy and a number of Adam Sandler films, says he met with Barbara Broccoli about doing a Bond film. Sounds like a Brosnan film. Since he is one of Adam Sandler's friends, I manage he would work with the producers well.

I know many fans dismiss TWINE, but it has always been one of my favourites. Admittedly I am biased because it was my first 007 film and therefore I consider it to be the film that made me a fan.

Nevertheless, there are many things to be appreciated in this entry:
    - despite the ‘painface’ comments, I think it was Pierce’s most mature take on the character.
    - Sophie Marceau. I repeat: Sophie Marceau.
    - a plot that goes to a place where we have never quite been before: Bond falls in love with the villain.
    - I am not the biggest fan of outrageous gadgets, but somehow they seem to work here for me, particularly love the credit card that contains a key.
    - the Z8. Usually I am not a BMW fan, but the Z8 is gorgeous. Might as well have been an Italian car but for the badge.
    - hands down, the best attire Bond has worn since the 60’s.
    - Valentin Dmytrovich Zukovsky. This guy cracks me up everytime he’s on screen. Great final scene as well.
    - David Arnold delivers a great score and Garbage a fine theme song.
    - I like the MI6 scenes in Scotland as well: Q, R, the good doctor, M and Moneypenny. Tanner and Robinson both being present as well is a nice touch.
    - speaking of MI6, I like the way they all work together here. Compare them to the recent Mendes Gang and I know which MI6 team I would pick.
    - some of the oneliners fall a bit flat but I really like the sense of fun throughout. I smile quite a lot during TWINE.

So there you go, I conveniently leave out obvious shortcomings to emphasize its strenghts but I’d say there are more than reasons enough to like this entry.

TWINE was my first Bond film too. I still feel a rush of nostalgia and excitement during the PTS, the sequence that got my six year old self hooked. I have grown to understand the rest of the film is a sorry mess though, regrettably...

Back then I didn't care about story, direction and performances. I only wanted some cool action with bondian music ;)

All excellent points! That’s why TWINE is #2 in my rankings.

Always love this shot. Valentin looking fly, Bond looking serious, and we can see the two biggest reasons Denise Richards was cast in this role.
