Thanks @CommanderRoss. And yes, it's the 2014 festival. And no, it's nothing to do with AVTAK or James Bond Jr, of course!
My "AVTAK or James Bond junior" remark referred to RichardThe Bruce's post which I took to be about the Dunsmuir Estate. But I guess I misinterpreted his post in that way and he meant Bregenz after all?

(Just kidding from me on James Bond Jr based on the image is all. Mischief.)

Thanks for the clarification, @RichardTheBruce. Anyway, @QBranch, this is your turn once more.

OK, I'll pick this up in an attempt to revive this thread once more. What is this?

Could it be Vienna or Hamburg?

It could be (I won't answer "or" questions). But this arch has a special role in a Bond film.

Was the BMW "parked" there in Hamburg?

Yes, indeed it was. It is the very arch in what used to be the Kaufhof department store (now vacant until redeveloped for future use) at Mönckebergstrasse 3. There never was an Avis agency there, they only put this in for the filming. In the following screenshots you can see how it looks in the movie. Note the small blue square signs to the left of the arch, marking water pipes under the street. They are still the same today (as are the pipes :-) ). I took the new photo just yesterday with my smartphone, you can see my reflection at center right.

Now I hope you can think of something new to keep this going again.

How is this connected to the novels?

    Caribbean island? Jamaica? Dr. No?

Strangways' home in LALD and Dr. No is in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. In LALD he also drinks Blue Mountain coffee. In TMWTGG they are at least mentioned. Any more?

    Yep. Jamaica.

I didn't think about the coffee. Smart.
Here comes the too easy question:
Which novel's first sentence mentions these mountains?

    Dr. No does mention them:
Punctually at six o’clock the sun set with a last yellow flash behind the Blue Mountains, a wave of violet shadow poured down Richmond Road, and the crickets and tree frogs in the fine gardens began to zing and tinkle

Indeed. It's one of my favourite Bond novels.
Would you like to start a new round @zebrafish ?

We are looking for a location and the novel it is from. Sorry for the poor quality, it is a screen-grab from a video.

Maybe the airport where Bond arrives in the beginning of the LALD novel? Idlewild, NY?

It is an airport, but it is not in NY. Next, you could check in which novels an airport is mentioned and you could investigate the picture more closely for a definitive clue.

Don't you just loooove Amazon...they just updated my Kindle app (on my Windows PC) and threw out everything in the library that was not downloaded from their website. Fortunately, they left the "My Kindle Content" folder untouched, so I could relatively easily, but also unnecessarily, get back to the previous status by opening each .mobi file once. Still, it's sort of aggravating. But I'll now check my Fleming novels.

Judging from the picture, it should be National Airport (Washington, DC - now Ronald Reagan International...urrrgh), but this may be misleading. So don't take this as a guess yet. And it ain't Las Vegas McCarran - now Harry Reid, BTW.

I'd venture to say this is Miami International Airport. The billboard or even the terminal building for (now-defunct) National Airlines covers the front. But it's rather uncanny when compared to, say, this:

    mia-postcard-digital-collection-940.jpg

It's the setting for chapter 1 of Goldfinger.

You have got it, @j_w_pepper ! In Goldfinger, the first sentence (inspired by @goldenswissroyale ) is "James Bond, with two double bourbons inside him, sat in the final departure lounge of Miami Airport and thought about life and death."

If you googled the term "Fly Delta DC7", you would be guided to a page that says: Delta DC-7 service started April 1, 1954, from Chicago to Miami, which narrows down the possible airports (although later, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Houston, St. Louis, New Orleans, Washington, DC and Dallas were added).

Thank you. Now I'll really have to think of something. The "Avis" arch just came across my mind when walking around the Hamburg center.

OK, I'm pretty sure this won't last long. But we haven't had this yet and it's getting harder to find more challenging locations.

Maybe the location where Bond steals the car from the woman in the phone booth in OP?

Good idea, but that one was a set in Pinewood. No, it isn't. And since one of my last attempts was OP (the filming of the scenes *after* the phone booth incident, in Berlin-Spandau): No, this one isn't Octopussy.

PS: And since I forgot to mention up front, yes, this is from a movie, not a novel.

I have been there and it looks just like the neck of the woods where I live. It is the main town square in Loket (Czech Republic), which featured in the movie Casino Royale. Mathis has the local police chief (a Michael G. Wilson cameo) arrested on that square. That town is gorgeous and if you are there, Karlovy Vary is not far, where the Casino scenes are supposed to play.
The hotel's name is Goethe, but for the movie they renamed it Branatz and used kyrillic letters.

I guess I have to think of a new one now.
