Thanks. It's difficult for me to think what more they could have done. But I think I can put my finger on one particular item...

AFAIK EoN (Babs and Michael) have never actually directly addressed their fans, its only been through the trade print and media.

It would have been nice for them to have published a letter, or perhaps a small video, directly talking to fans, thanking them for their support of the series over the last 60 years, summing up the history of the series, at a least giving some reassurance over the future. Something like:

As we celebrate James Bond's 60th anniversary on the big screen, we know you are keen to know what the future holds. We need a little time to redevelop and reimagine the series going forward, as we always do when we have a new leading man in the tuxedo, but rest assured, we are working away at it, and as always, James Bond... will return.

You do get the impression they just ignore their fanbase. And I can't say I am a huge fan of that.

A bit needy. They clearly value their audience, it's where they make their money from. Eon are always doing stuff 'to the fans'; we got a new doco, updates all the way through NTTD, a live launch programme when they started shooting, lots of other social media stuff, the producers doing rounds of interviews in all sorts of places including podcasts, even live interviews in person etc. But that's not enough, we need them to talk directly to us?! Come around to our houses for a cup of tea one by one?
I've been following the production of the new Indiana Jones film, and do you know what they've been doing for that? Absolutely nothing, no fan engagement whatsoever- I tell a lie: they released one photo at the end of May. They haven't even announced the cast yet and they finished shooting at the beginning of the year- the only press release during shooting was to say that Harrison Ford had injured himself on set. Then they did a presentation at the Disney event a couple of weeks ago behind closed doors. And there isn't even a title for the film yet. Remember Eon revealing the cast list one by one for NTTD on Twitter before they started shooting, the title reveal video...? Imagine the moaning and griping if Eon followed the Indy model!

Can’t argue with you there. You would think that they were making another Crystal Skull, considering how quiet they have been. In Lucasfilm’s defense, they are always secretive, particularly when JJ Abrams was in charge. And in terms of casting, Mads and PWB have been announced.

I'm not objecting to them doing that, just saying it's how other companies make films. Why should they talk to people before they've finished the thing? And it'll still make megabucks and fans will be happy (well, as happy as fans ever are!)
Those castings were announced, you're right. But I don't think Banderas or Toby Jones or the other cast members were; and we knew Lashana Lynch and David Dencik and whoever else was in NTTD from day one.

As for Barbara (or "Babs" to some, apparently) and Michael directly addressing their fans... uhm... what? Sit down, look into the camera and then what? "Hey guys! We have an open line. You can call in and ask us some questions. We're here all day!" Come on. Let's say thank you to the people giving us good films. Must we have them over, do they have to send us postcards or give a shoutout to us at the end of every movie before we acknowledge their work? Part of what I like about EON is that they don't keep an open channel for us, fans. They deliver the goods, what and when they decide to; we pay for them, appreciate them or don't, and call ourselves fans, or not, because we love this series very, very much. Anything beyond that is too close for comfort and far exceeds a normal "relationship" between a supplier of goods and his paying customer.

Although what I thought was pretty impressive for NTTD was that the fan social media channels were included in the press junket, so you got folks like David from The Bond Experience interviewing Daniel Craig and other top cast members down the line, on the official NTTD launch set and all that. I would say that's embracing the fans too.

Me wanting a QoS 2.0 in 2010 is the polar opposite of what other fans would've wanted.
Although it's exactly what I wanted too, I have to 'fess! :D And 3.0, and 4. - well, you get the picture...
But, yes, agreed - most of the threads on the forum show how we've got so many different ideas of what we want from the series that basing it on the fans' wishlists would probably lead to a pretty bizarre FrankenBond of a film. And not in a good way!

You and I both, my friend, but can definitely accept that's not an idea many fans would've gotten behind with excitement.

I’ll shut up for now. I shouldn’t be so critical about something that is essentially a giant business. While I have my criticisms, we Bond fans are luckier fans than a lot of other fandoms.

I agree. I absolutely agree. 60 years of glory, of consistent quality, of films that continue to inspire generations of fans. I feel very fortunate, indeed.

It’s 70 years actually. If you include the books. We’ve gotten lucky, in the sense that we have generally regular products.

You are correct. And I usually include the books; don't know why I didn't now. ;-) The books are, indeed, a major gift too. Over a dozen Fleming books; dozens more if you count what others have written; toys, video games, comics; books on Bond; soundtracks and scores; documentaries; and of course the films themselves, plus tons of props, merch and amusing Bond-inspired articles of clothing. We are truly blessed. Compared to the Bond franchise, several others are a barren wasteland when it comes to fan-servicing indulgences.

Incredible way to look at it is that the series could have spanned lifetimes, like if someone was 10 reading the very first novels all the way up to today at 80.

Worth remembering that we did get a new Bond novel this year too then, if we're including the books. Plus a spinoff one, apparently :)

Yes, the series keeps giving. Not as much, say, as the Star Wars franchise or Marvel, at least not in terms of merchandising or comics or toys, but the world of Bond consistently drops quality stuff for us to buy if so desired. Also, it's not the quantity that matters; it really is the quality. And I have little to complain about as a Bond fan.

They do care about their fans. We should start a 70th anniversary thread and see what happens starting on January 1st, 2023. For IFP’s new CR 70th anniversary edition (which seems like a given at this point), they should release all the forewords of previous people: Jeffery Deaver, Anthony Horowitz and even Sir Roger Moore!

That's a great rundown of the 60th anniversary.

    Atwell for B26!

I’ve been thinking about Hayley Atwell becoming a part of the Bond family for a while now. She would be more than welcome. Possibly as M, May, Sixtine or perhaps best of all, a villain.

I quite enjoyed that documentary this year but that was about it. We got the short end of the stick here in the States with no theatrical showings (at least in my neck of the woods). The only other thing that could've rescued it for me was an announcement of the rest of the series on 4K.

With Amazon owning them, we'll get 4K versions eventually. They'll sell like hotcakes and will make the streaming service look good.

From the perspective of a US based Bond fan, the 60th was a tad underwhelming. And while I personally don't fall into this camp, at what point do fans say: "if they don't care about us, why should we care about them?"

Again, I think that there were reasons why things worked out as they did, but I'm sure EON knows that this line of reasoning exists in some circles of the fandom.

I think we should change the title of this thread to Bond’s 70 anniversary. I’m sure we’ll get more Bond announcements and fun things to come. Particularly from Ian Fleming Publications.

Maybe Eon will announce the new Bond actor or title by then.

At this rate Bond 26 won't be released until the 70th anniversary. BB and MGW aren't renowned for their proficiency!

Madeleine: We just need more time. If we only had more time.
Bond: You have all the time in the w--what the hell is that?! Felix?! I thought you were dead!
Felix: The CIA revived me with top secret nanobot technology! They also found a way to neutralize Safin's nanobots! Get into the chopper and let's go see our families!
    Bond: Yes, sir.

Ah, I get you. Just my joke but I'm glad you love the film as it is. Whisper it, but I do too! Extras of that kind are always welcome in the bare bones releases we're sadly growing increasingly used to these days.

Sadly, film studios seem to be moving away from releasing physical formats of their products with all the bells and whistles. Im a proud traditionalist. I like the thrill of popping a disk in the player. I think we were badly served with the QOS, Spectre and NTTD releases so far.
