  • I had him at 12. Definitely surprised he lasted this long! I like him quite a bit, he’s got a lot of fun quips and Lonsdale’s delivery is perfect…but there’s not much more beyond that? Good for him though!

He’s in 10th place for me but in retrospect, even I am surprised I put everyone’s favorite space nazi this high on my list.
I guess it’s mostly due to his delicious delivery of some of the franchise’s wittiest lines uttered by a villain.
Aside from that, he’s actually pretty average.

    +1

He's in 10th place for me, as well. I'd still stick by that, though could see him going a few spots lower on the list. I love Lonsdale as an actor and there's something so straight-faced in the ridiculous nature of his objectives and grandiose plan to essentially wipe out everyone on Earth. It doesn't get much more threatening than that, even if he plays it more as a world-renown thespian rather than a diabolical villain. Still, he's great.

Even in death, his munificence is boundless.

Hugo Drax is number 5 for me! I think Lonsdale is terrific in it, really relishes saying those wonderful lines! Yes, in the book, he is much more layered, but Moonraker is a very guilty pleasure, and Lonsdales Drax is a huge part of it!
And that fabulous shot of him standing in front of Ken Adams awesome 'Mondrian' set, is a joy to behold!

Drax is my #2 villain. If it wasn't for a certain other fella still in the contest I would consider him the best villain in the whole franchise. He's just so likeable, you almost feel bad for him when his grand plan goes in the pooper.

Time to dive into the top 5 with:

    MADS MIKKELSEN
    as Le Chiffre
    in CASINO ROYALE

    65641.jpeg

Le Chiffre received one gold medal, two silvers and three bronzes. He was also ranked 4th on six occasions, 5th and 6th, both on two occasions, and 9th on one occasion.

His worst ranking would have been 17th, were it not for one participant who put him in penultimate place, marking his only bottom 5 rating.

Le Chiffre acquired 172 points in total.

12 for me. I enjoy the character, and Mads is perfect, but I just barely view him as a villain at all, at least in the Bondian sense. By that I mean he doesn't really have much of a scheme going, and he spends much of the film being rather frightened. But he's probably my favorite thing about Casino Royale.

Mads is absolutely stunning as LeChiffre. He found the right balance between menacing and charming.

    Also have him at 5
  • Number 4 for me. If you just saw his part written on the page it probably wouldn’t be too striking, but Mikkelsen brings *so* much to the role, with menace, arrogance, impatience, and a gradually fraying cool exterior adding layers to every scene he’s in. Sure, he doesn’t have much of a lair and he’s small time compared to the villains of just about every other Bond film, but I like that about him. He knows he’s not the biggest fish in the pond so he has to compensate for it, which makes him the perfect foil for Bond in their game of ego one-upping. Perfect casting.

16th for me. Not sure why I had him ranked so low but I love his performance. Mads is a brilliant actor.

Mads Le Chiffre was as high as no. 3 for me!
Loved him. Great screen presence, brilliant nemesis for Bond,..."Nothing sinister!" I beg to differ!

I'm actually shocked to see him not only get eliminated at 5, but to go out before my #1, Sanchez (whose performance I already was content with having made the top 10; I'm now simultaneously elated beyond belief regardless of where he lands, yet I can't help but feel I'll be disappointed at this point if he doesn't win the gold :)) ) is crazy to me. #2 on my list.

Ladies and gentlemen, our number 4:

    TELLY SAVALAS
    as Ernst Stavro Blofeld
in ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE

    03b191cd5793b85b0eda4ceb8dcb6823--secret-service-lobbies.jpg

Not only is Telly the second best-rated American actor on this list, he’s also the highest-ranked Blofeld.

One gold medal, four silvers and one bronze medal were awarded to ‘non-uncredited Blofeld #2’.

He also received six (!) 4th places, two 5th places, two 6th places and two 10th places. No bottom 5’s of course. The lowest ranking here was 18th.

Only two participants gave him a spot outside their top 15.

OHMSS’s Ernst Stavro Blofeld received 179 points in total.

That leaves us with these three contestants, battling it out for the top spot:

    Dr. No
    Auric Goldfinger
    Franz Sanchez

Tomorrow we’ll award the bronze medal. Sunday we reveal the runner-up and the winner!

Wait, is Robert Davi not American?

I'm seriously stunned that Sanchez is on the podium. Could it really be gold for him? At this point I feel like he's going to beat one of the two and come up just shy of the other.

You’re right Davi is also American, I must have thought he was Isthmusian :))

Edited the original post, thanks for reminding me :)

Telly is my number 10. He used to be number one, and has fallen a bit, but I still love him.

It may be nitpicky, I don't know, but one section of the film drives me a bit nuts with him. When Tracy transparently fakes being into him and whatever he's up to, he falls for it absolutely, like a cartoon character. It's pretty deflating....

    Number 6 for me...
  • #2 for me. He’s still not my imagined ideal Blofeld but he’s so good in the movie, as both a criminal mastermind and physical presence, that hardly matters. He’s got a great thuggish menace behind the veil of polite snobbery that really works for me, and Blofeld’s biggest weakness being his insatiable desire for a title works much better for me than his whole “cuckoo” schtick from Spectre. And then we get the wonderful bobsled fight scene before getting taken out (temporarily) by the tree in one of my favorite scenes of a final villain being defeated. He may not be the ideal onscreen Blofeld, but he’s certainly the best one we’ve got.

Telly's Blofeld is another great one. A clear example of inspired casting.

Telly is #2 for me. My all time favorite Blofeld, he brought so much to the character - even the way he holds his cigarettes stands out to me every single time. He's dangerous and cunning but not unable to cast a smile or have a serious conversation without seeming like he's out to destroy the world or make a name for himself. Great performer in an iconic role.

Exactly where I had Telly at, number 4!
Fantastic portrayal of Blofeld! Savalas is an imposing figure, and has wonderful delivery of the lines! Plus he really gets involved in the action, notably the ski chase, though I do cringe just a tiny bit at the "we'll head him off at the precipice!" line!
Best Blofeld in the Best Bond movie!

For what it's worth, if we had done this after NTTD (but I get why it was done before!) as of now after three viewings, I would have placed Safin somewhere in my top 5, definitely below Le Chiffre and Sanchez but I think I'd actually put him above Silva.

    1. Ernst Stavro Blofeld (OHMSS)
    2. Julius No
    3. Francisco Scaramanga
    4. Alec Trevelyan
    5. Raoul Silva
    6. Franz Sanchez
    7. Maximillian Zorin
    8. Lyutsifer Safin
    9. Le Chiffre
    10. Kananga
    11. Elektra King
    12. Auric Goldfinger
    13. Elliot Carver
    14. Rosa Klebb
    15. Ernst Stavro Blofeld (YOLT)
    16. Dominic Greene
    17. Aristotle Kristatos
    18. Emilio Largo
    19. Hugo Drax
    20. Karl Stromberg
    21. Kamal Khan
    22. Ernst Stavro Blofeld (SP)
    23. Georgi Koskov
    24. Ernst Stavro Blofeld (DAF)
    25. Gustav Graves

Yes, I liked Safin that much. They could have done a little more with him, but I was happy with almost everything.

I think that I liked Safin a little bit more than most. He is unappealing as a human being, but he's supposed to be. His weakness in character, is his character. Uncharismatic, yet seems to behave as though he was. Still, he probably wouldn't get out of the 20s for me. Back even further if Waltz's Blofeld is now to be considered on the merits of both appearances. If that were the case he'd move up quite a few places, displacing Safin even more. If not, he stays towards the back of the pack, as well.

Though, that could change. I could see him (Safin) rising above Kamal and Kristatos and a few others of that ilk, after I get more settled and familiar with the film. Those others have the advantage of almost being old relatives to me.

That's a great way to put it!

Dr. No is my #1 villain. Wiseman set a standard that hasn’t yet to be surpassed imo.
