I've spent many a night and some days on that exact style cot. Not recently though.

For the ice cream relation, yes and more to follow on Gardner. Plus there is the FYEO offer to Bibi.

So: #1 and #2 correct and the floor is @Some_Kind_Of_Hero's.

  • Nice! Here we go:

    I'll go with:
    Severine
    [from Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever;
Invincible minus Vince, minus Hubble, equals in]

And I'm gonna check out Lucy Liu and Antonio Banderas, definitely.

  • But of course. Over to you, @RichardTheBruce!

  • #1 Solitaire?

    Solo (eyeglass) + tear?
  • #3 "So what are you saying? It couldn't go nuclear?"

#1: not that. Even simpler, just as specific to Bond or more so.

#3: no. I'll reveal these have a Gardner link.

Is #2 Amarillo in Texas which Bond visits in John Gardner’s For Special Services?

#2 is down by @Dragonpol, who nailed the theme here.

  • I wanted to say Mark Hazard (which I actually believe is used by Bond in FSS) for #3, but can't make "Mark" fit the noh mask.

Noh, pretty straightforward, just go with it. Two syllables.

  • No risk?

    Not that @Some_Kind_Of_Hero.

Two syllables, pretty straightforward use of the symbol. Ties to For Special Services of course.

  • Just to clarify, is the whole rebus two syllables or the second symbol is two syllables?

    First syllable "noh".

Second image and single syllable to be named.

Maybe @Dragonpol has thoughts on this one.

I had to check wiki to get the answer. The second part is a small word.

Yeah pretty common in government and military for that symbol is my experience.

And the two-syllable Rebus solution featured in the book.

I've been thinking it over but nothing suitable has come to mind yet. It seems I'll have to have a flick through my copy of For Special Services then...

Indeed, it's one of Gardner's crazier and fun entries. Good stuff. :)

    @QBranch it is that, no?

@Dragonpol, looking toward book's end will help.

@QBranch, you cheeky bugger. I'll let @Dragonpol take this one.

Thanks for the clue, @QBranch and @RichardTheBruce!

Funnily enough this morning I had NORAID in my head as being linked to the novel. I'd misremembered what the name was.

Then NORAD (standing for North American Defence Command) came to mind just now and a flick through the novel has confirmed it. I'll declare the answer but I definitely can't claim victory for this one. Therefore the floor is open to the other members who helped with their guesses and clues. :)

#3 is NORAD as you said @Dragonpol.

So the floor is open if someone has a Rebus ready. And I have a few more Gardner items waiting in the wings.
  • I'm curious, how did you guys get to Amarillo? That had crossed my mind funnily enough, but I couldn't work it out.

I found it by saying the initials M R L O quickly like it was one word. Thus, "Emarillo" and then from that "Amarillo".
