My problem with the Bond video games is that they don't seem to show any kind of respect for the Bond franchise. The games don't quite get the soundtracks right, being overly brassy and very cheesy sounding. The voice acting is usually terrible so the whole package ends up feeling like a Bond spoof rather than an actual serious product. This isn't the case so much with GE Reloaded and 007 Legends, but still they don't feel like quality AAA titles.

The only saving grace for Goldeneye Reloaded imho was that David Arnold was involved on the soundtrack and that made a big change in giving it more authentic.

007 Legends soundtrack was also overseen by David Arnold, and I'd say that Blood Stone's soundtrack fits beside Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace's perfectly.
I reckon if they made Bond games more like Splinter Cell : Conviction, then took Splinter Cell back to it's Chaos Theory style that would be a preferable trade off. You never really feel like Bond lately with the gadgets or the stealth like GE on the N64 because now they lazily made his only gadget a smartphone.

Blood Stone is pretty much Splinter Cell Conviction with a Bond skin.
If a quality developer like Rockstar took Bond and made a game with it using the Max Payne / GTA V enhanced RAGE engine I think it would be something special. Or maybe give it to a Japanese developer so that they really integrate the story into the experience.

Sadly, Rockstar will never get it, but Konami could do an awesome job (especially if Kojima Productions handles it and they use the supreme new FOX Engine).
My issue with the games it that's they're far too cheesy and the villains feel like Austin Powers. If they wrote a non-generic story line with some complexity and excellent cut scenes and made a standalone AAA Bond adventure without trying to cash in or tie-in to a movie, I'd be up for that. Get David Arnold to do the soundtrack or a suitably respectful composer, a decent title theme and Daniel Kleinman to do the titles instead of those terrible generic dancing silhouette women intros they usually do...

I'm quite certain Blood Stone can give you everything you want there (well, not Daniel Kleinman).
  • Blood Stone is alright. I have it but I played about 80 % and never had the will to play it all the way to the end. The score was done by Richard Jaques and I believe it won an award, I still just found it a little bit on the cheesy side but still clearly inspired by Arnold's Casino Royale Score.

That said, I agree that if Konami were to make a Bond game using the FOX engine that would blow everything out of the water, it looks *AMAZING*...

I say give it back to EA, and get Bioware to do it. A Bond game in the gameplay style of the Mass Effect series would be great, plus Bioware know how to do narratively driven stories.

It would be more interesting to give it to EA/DICE off the back of the new Mirror's Edge 2 engine, depending how successful that is.

But the obvious choice would be Ubisoft Montreal or Sony/Naughty Dog.

Mirror's Edge's engine is DICE. If the game was made with that engine... my friend... [-O<
  • If EA did get it back, I don't think DICE would get it because EA count on them to make Battlefield every few years (probably the 2nd biggest shooter around), and if by some miracle Mirrors Edge 2 gets made there might be sequels to that.

Well, but they could copy the engine. So they'd make the new BF and 007 at the same time.

Mirror's Edge 2 is all but confirmed...

While DICE are mainly focussing on BF, they have been making noises lately that they don't just want to be the "Battlefield Factory".

I still think Sony will do their best to leverage the license exclusively for Playstation, and I'd lay money on that being for PS4. Naughty Dog would be the perfect studio for it but Guerilla could also make a stunning Bond FPS, as could Insomniac. They've finished with Resistance now and nobody's heard from FUSE for quite a while. Beyond those, all they've produced in the past year are two fairly half hearted Ratchet & Clank games. Could they be working on something big? I'd rather have Naughty Dog, but Insomniac make stunning games. Oh, and there's also Sucker Punch. inFamous is finished and they've only got one Spyro game due out on Vita and PS3 coming up.

Dream ticket would be a joint venture with Naughty Dog on the shooting and stealth missions, with Evolution Studios (remember how good their WRC games were, as well as Motorstorm) on the driving sections.
  • Do you reckon we need a game that's split into missions and then driving sections? Why not leave out the driving altogether? they can be somewhat of a drag...

But someone might actually make a section as good as the opening of QoS. And I'd pay to play that alone.

Seeing as the Hitman games have allready been brought up in this thread, IGN are running an article about the greatest Hitman missions in the series, one of the missions IGN single out is the 'Invitation To A Party' mission from Hitman 2:
[snip]Waiters and maids circulate, and a rogue Spetsnaz agent also after what the ambassador has hidden in his safe throws a spanner in the works. It’s practically ripped from a James Bond movie. You’re basically James Bond. Only, like, without hair.

On an unrelated note, could somebody please make a good James Bond game? You know, perhaps exactly like the above?[snip]
    http://uk.ign.com/articles/2012/12/02/five-classic-hitman-missions-that-would-make-perfect-absolution-dlc

So it's not just us that want a good Bond game. I thought that was worth sharing.

That's really a Bondian level, my favourite one throughout the series.

  • I have to agree. James Bond should seperate from Activision. Goldeneye Reloaded was good. But 007 Legends was panned by critics & suffered from poor sales. (Which is a terrible shame) Game developers that would give us James Bond fans a solid Bond game would be Naughty Dog, Konami, or Ubisoft. (IMO)

I could likely see Insomniac getting the license next. I probably doesn't cost much after what Activision has done with it.

They've proven they can make great games with Resistance. Also, they're a 3rd party dev now.

Goldeneye Reloaded is basically the same as 007 Legends except 007 Legends still had bits that were faithful to the original movies...GR just shits on the good film of Goldeneye

I agree 002. That's why I said Goldeneye Reloaded was good not great. It was a slap in the face to 1995's Goldeneye. 007 Legends stays more true to the past Bond films.

What's funny is that Goldeneye Reloaded and 007 Legends are so similar and yet they got drastically different reviews. Critics are in love with the Goldeneye brand

Goldeneye Reloaded wasn't terrible but it was pretty average and it managed to be less inventive and interesting than it's illustrious predecessor. Very few open areas and an almost completely linear path being my main complaints. It was COD by another name. ironic that Treyarch actually made a non COD feeling game in QoS which I personally think is far superior. Finally got all the single player trophies last night after finishing it on 007 difficulty. Doubt I'll be able to get platinum as there seems to be about 5 people left playing it online!

Well, Quantum of Solace is good, Goldeneye/Goldeneye Reloaded was good in it's own way, 007 Legends is uh well OK but just Goldeneye Reloaded with not a lot of improvement and the Skyfall mission dissapoint me. The best from Activision is Blood Stone. I do agree maybe EA should've kept the Bond license (who else beside EA and Activision could do Bond game? Ubisoft? Square Enix using their Eido studio?). Maybe if Goldeneye/Goldeneye Reloaded was done by EA, they may have kept the game closer to the movie and they may have brought back Pierce Brosnan and the movie's original casts to have the feel of the movie (hey look at EA's From Russia with Love, they brought back Sean Connery to voice Bond).

Also even if EA still make Bond games, all of you would still be complaning about the game play like Call of Duty except it'll play like Battlefield or Medal of Honor. The best you can do is can EA replicate the same gameplay like in Blood Stone.

After playing Uncharted, I always thought Naughty Dog could maybe handle Bond if they can combined the gameplay of Uncharted and Blood Stone (the stealth takedown made the game awesome) together. I'm not sure if Metal Gear Solid or Splinter Cell gameplay would fit a Bond game. I would love to see a Bond game that play like Alpha Protocol.

    @mdo007

I played Alpah Protocol not long ago and I was really surprised with how much I liked it. It got awful reviews but I found it really enjoyable. I'm not sure if the RPG elements or the choosing your own mission structure would work in a Bond game that well ( I really do believe that a Bond game should follow a strict narrative like a film) but if the Alpha Protocol gameplay was polished up a little bit with a great story, that would be a great Bond game.

And I've said before, Naughty Dog will never do a Bond game. That would mean the rights would be at Sony and there's no way they would give it to ND. Realistic options are Ubisoft (the best choice), THQ, 2K, or Cryteck (a long shot).

I know but I can dream right.

    @-)

I'm not sure about Ubisoft, I don't want a open-world Bond game a la Far Cry. Also I'm not comfortable about a Bond game that plays like a tactical shooter like Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon.

I would think Ubisoft is a good choice. They seem to take great care in their projects as a publisher/developer and I think they would go the 3rd person route, something Bond games should always have as a perspective instead of useless 1st person.

    1. They make Splinter Cell. That sells me on any Bond game they would do

    2. They're not afraid to do movie games AND put care into it

They just make the most sense for EON to give the rights to. Especially considering EA won't take it back.

Has anyone else come across the thought of EON renewing the rights with Activision? I mean what a horror that would be!

  • According to Activision and EON's contract, how long time do Activision have left with the 007 rights in their hands?

Wow, lots of hate on Activision, can't say that they don't deserve it. It's funny that even when EA had the licence lots of people were complaining when in fact the former had the best track record for how long they had the licence for, Rogue agent and 007 racing aside.

Until 2014. So maybe one more game.

The sales for the Activision games have been poor so if for some stupid reason EON did renew the licence then it'd just be a bad buisness decision.
