David Harewood is a good shout for M (I don't know why but I'm really leaning towards younger, black British actors known for playing authoritative roles as M).

Yes, I only remembered after posting it that you suggested his name before. To be honest, I feel like Eon needs to do something different with Q: Llewelyn is still very much remembered and it will be difficult to try something close, while a younger Q was already tried with Whishaw and I can't imagine them portraying the character in a similar way so soon. Another idea I had was eventually to have the Ann Reilly character from the Gardner novels.

Not sure if this is the right place but I literally just learned that apparently the League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen sometimes features a character named "Campion Bond" who is supposed to be the great-grandfather of James. I've never heard of this before??

He's the only guy I really have in mind. As for doing something different with Q, I agree, which is why I feel it would be an interesting route to have Bond and Q be around the same age. I've already mentioned it a couple of times but we've seen the dynamic of an older Q and a younger Bond, and the reverse, so why not meet in the middle for the next era?

In that photo, Sophie Cookson reminds me of Caroline Bliss and the receptionist at The Ocean Club from Casino Royale. Good choice mate

David Harewood would be my pick for M. Casting anybody like Emma Thompson would just inevitably result in comparisons to Judi.

Bring back Peter Notley, the MI6 techie from CR. He looks like Q from the comics:

Loved that droll 'ow' from Craig after he'd been through all that in Miami without flinching! :D

Good call... I wonder if he was meant to be the defacto Q for Casino Royale? Considering we didn't have Whishaw yet, and this tracker could be considered the only "gadget" of CR...

Don't forget, someone had to install the Aston defib/P99 compartment trays as well as the various mapping apps on Bond's phone. Maybe he mentors Whishaw?

Yes! YES! I always thought he looked a bit like the real life Boothroyd. In fact, I was sure he was going to be revealed as Major Boothroyd/Q at some point after CR. I wonder I'd it wasn't in the plan at some point.

Excellent - would've made a great Boothroyd, for sure.

Good call, it looks like this comic version in particular was modeled on Boothroyd.

I'd like to see Q get back into demonstrating the tech in front of Bond - dummies included. Whishaw's interpretation didn't really do that, but rather give the items to Bond and simply explain their function, leaving Bond to figure out how they operate in the field.

All those excellent Above-and-underground sets of "London" and none of them were a high tech demonstration q-lab (except for spectre, kinda)

There is the callcentre crew when Bond gets poisoned. That seems to be Q section (or at least adjacent) as they seem to know what's in the car and what isn't. Could of course also just be 00-tech support line...

Yeah, I suppose that was more or less Q branch in CR. Our friend Pseud-royd should have shown up again in that scene.

This should probably go in the Questions thread (and I could just look it up), but is one of the guys in the callcentre also the guy with the weird Microsoft Surface table in QoS?

I would love Ben Whishaw to carry on as Q, I think he's brilliant. Although I think his recasting would make heads explode like Judy being M in Casino.

In which case, it would be worth doing just for *%&$ and giggles...It was only recently, btw, when I understand - thanks to these forums - that Judi D's M was not the same person in both sets of Brosnan and Craig films. Unless, of course, whoever wrote about got it wrong or I misunderstood. At the time, I just took it as "some actors stay, some don't, even for the same part" as had historically been the case.

@Since62 ... I still don't understand the difference and I keep my life simple using the same as your original thought: some actors go, some stay... Helps from having what gray matter I have left, from leaking out of my ear.

Yep, that's exactly how I accept the Judi Dench as M from Brosnan to Craig films.
Or actors like Joe Don Baker playing Whittaker in TLD, then turning up as Wade in GE and TND.
Don't dwell on it too much.

Actors playing different roles in Bond films takes me out of the film. Dench didn't bother me because she was playing the same role. There has always been plenty of talent that using the same actor twice wasn't necessary. If he were so inclined, Craig could come back as M. That shouldn't bother anyone who doesn't have a problem with actors playing different roles in Bond films.

Would that be a cross-dressing Craig ? he's a good actor...if Milton Berle could do it, Craig could do it even better

Supposedly on Dench M is a woman called Barbara Mawdsley and the other is Olivia Mansfield. However, the canon-status of these names is debated AFAIK as they are never stated.

To me, they are different character because they behave quite differently. M in Goldeneye is basically the polar opposite from M in Skyfall. Of course, the intervening decades could have changed her outlook on things, but together with it just being way easier to rationalize the Craig films as one big side-step universe, I would say they are just different people/different versions of a person.

Yeah it really seemed like Brosnan M hated Bond and Craig M loved him.

Does the M relationship coincide with Barbara's own feelings of the actor? ;)
