I'm still in the process of recording OP's LD, but here's a sample of the pool scene.

Just based on those I'd say the LD looks closer to that 16mm print clip in term of tint, especially Roger's flesh tone.

Well, bummer news: My LD player finally crapped out. ): Not surprised. My Bond screencap project has been the most active that player has been ever since I bought it, so it was only a matter of time before I wore out that hardware. So LD screencaps will have to be put on hold for awhile. Luckily, I managed to get some screenshots of TLD, so that will be on the horizon. OP will be missing two shots in the upcoming batch I've made, just the final two shots. I'm probably gonna take a break from this for a bit. I may start a blog where I can post all my available screencaps for each page rather than cram them all on this thread. In the meantime, here OP.

I like Roger's facial expression after he says: "In crime?". I should master that expression and go around making it at people.
Sorry about your LD player, @MakeshiftPython. Your efforts on this thread have been much appreciated. I must say I really like the colors on the Bond LD transfers. They tend to lean more towards the yellow/green side of the tint making Bond look more tanned rather than pinkish.
I wore out an old VHS player recently. The player ate up my CBS/Fox copy of OP which looked more or less like the LD. Pan and scan, though.

Going by those shots I don't think the transfers look too radically different. In fact the SE DVD looks pretty good to me.

It's certainly interesting seeing how different all these transfers look. As @ToTheRight writes, your efforts on this thread have been much appreciated @MakeshiftPython! Shame about the LD player though…

Thanks! This was an interesting watch; I don't think I've seen clips from a 16mm copy of a Bond film before.

. The films with Alan Hume as DP will still look soft as that's how they were shot, which I always suspected was a way to hide Moore's apparent aging.
That's it. I've been trying to find an explanation, since I thought my BD's up untill MR look fantastic, and the ones from the 80's look rather dull.

Outside of Bond, Hume's work does have soft photography aside from RETURN OF THE JEDI (probably to keep the images clear for bluescreen processing), but once Moore is out and Dalton is the new Bond they give Alec Mills the job as DP and his images are much crisper than any of the previous 80s Moore films. I have nothing against soft photography, as it can be quite beautiful and vibrant in films like SUPERMAN, but yeah Hume's work seems more subdued. TLD ends up being the most visually striking of the 80s efforts.

Had it pre-ordered there, then opted to use a promo code to get it for $45 shipped through DeepDiscount, then they drop it to $40 on Amazon, so I cancel the DeepDiscount one and pre-order there, only to realize it won't deliver for a few days after the release date. Annoying, but at least I saved a few more bucks on it.

Is it me or do the 4k images look darker and less impressive than the BR?

It looks like it's coming specifically from a HDR source, which tends to look more naturalistic and darker than a blu-ray, and if displayed on a monitor that is not HDR equipped then it won't look as impressive compared to a blu-ray image made for SDR monitors.

How's the difference between the iTunes copies and UHD? Worth the upgrade?
Sure. For the audio alone, IMO. ITunes is DD 5.1, Craig UHD's are DTS-Master audio 5.1 or 7.1. Also better bitrate. The casual viewer wouldn't notice any big changes, though.

The UK set is still sitting at £60 as opposed to the U.S version $40.

The UK one isn't out till the 11th Nov though.

I'm thinking there is time for it to drop as that is literally double the price, my country is expensive.

In light of the below I just cancelled my order from UK Amazon and pre-ordered the U.S one.

Even if you factor in the postage and customs deposit it's still £45, £15 cheaper than it currently is being sold for on Amazon UK.

Even if the Blu-ray discs included are locked I'm not bothered as I have all of them bar SPECTRE on the format already. Not that bothered if the codes are compatible here, although I've been making quite nice profit out of selling the codes from my UHD purchases.

I recently got rid of my Bond 50 set, SF Steel book and SP Blu-ray and bought the Bond Collection set to replace it.

I'm not bothered about the collectability factor of the Bond 50 set and the extra disc is a pretty useless set of docs.

The Bond Collection set is much tidier and fits on my Blu-ray shelf unit nicely, I will stick the DC 4K UHD set next to it after I receive it for Christmas.

Figured the upgrade in Craig's films from blu to 4K wouldn't have been as dramatic as the first 19 or 20 films, as they were all mastered digitally. Nice thing about films of the digital age is we shouldn't expect the kind of fluctuations that Bond films got from LD to BD. What we saw from 2006 to today is pretty much what we'll get on home video.

I see on dvdcompare that audio of Spectre 4K BD is no longer DTS-HD MA 7.1, but DTS-HD MA 5.1. Also there don't at the extra's from in some country's missing bonus dvd.

For CR there re-using second BD release (Single disc BD with les extra's then 2 disc CE),it have been much more intresting if there have made it 3 disc edition with that 2 disc CE as disc 2 and 3 Or making it 2 disc version with video commentary on 4K BD and at disc 2 of 2 disc CE as second disc and bonus CD with missing music. And put it together in simalar package as 3 disc dvd and at booket from that version.

Overall it is mabey better to release 3 disc 4K BD (4K + Earlier BDupdated + NEW Bonus BD) , 2 disc 4K BD (4K + NEW Bonus BD) and release new 2 disc BD's (Earlier BDupdated + New Bonus BD). For CR that mean i take disc 1 BD from CE and update audiotrack from TRUE HD 5.1 in DTS X or DTS-HD MA 7.1

The reviews I've seen from early copies seem to say the upgrades aren't terribly impressive but are still upgrades over the BR copies, which is good enough for me.

Figured out what was wrong with my LD player and managed to get it to play and take more captures, so now I'll be able to resume the screencap comparisons. I only ask try not to quote the this post with all the caps. Don't wanna clutter up the thread too much. ;) With that said....

One Moore Time... A VIEW TO A KILL.

With all the formats, it now becomes clear that the SE DVD had some shortcomings, such as being riddled with edge enhancement. There's also a weird shift in color, as you can see the icebergs are pure white on all formats except SE DVD's having cooler color temperature that persists throughout the entire film. Lowry to their credit tried to restore the most of the original color timing with their remaster for UE DVD and blu-ray, but then of course made mistakes of their own like with the severe cropping in the PTS and stabilizing a shot that was supposed to shake up during a tremor at Stacey's house.

With MGM's new 4K transfer, AVTAK now has a much more filmic look to it. The movie was shot with a new film stock at the time that was known to be very grainy due to its high speed, and you can see the grain persist in some of the images like at M's office, Pola Ivanova emerging from the water, and Bond in the mine. This the same kind of film stock that would be used in movies like ALIENS and PREDATOR, which were even more grainier.

What's ironic is that the single blu-ray copy of SP gave me an HD copy for iTunes, and eventually that was automatically upgraded to 4K for free once it was available.

I believe Lionsgate and Universal are the only studios who's blu-ray insert codes can be redeemed at 4K on iTunes. I only bought JOHN WICK films on blu-ray, but the iTunes codes were eligible for 4K.
