The Saltzman's are back in business.....with 'James Bond'

I just read this news on our beloved friends of HMSS-Blog:
https://hmssweblog.wordpress.com/2015/06/30/a-james-bond-musical/
eon45017.jpg
And here a more detailed article:
http://www.broadwayworld.com/las-vegas/article/JAMES-BOND-Musical-Headed-to-Vegas-Broadway-20150629#

And it does seem that Barbara Broccoli's childhood friend Merry Saltzman is back in business. And with something that has a connection with the Bond franchise as well. A musical about James Bond 007: "James Bond: The Musical"! It is slated for a 2017 premiere on Broadway. Mrs Merry Saltzman, the daughter of legendary producer Harry Saltzman, will serve as executive producer.

What is so interesting about this news, is that the production behind this musical must have been given permission by EON Productions, led by Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson, to greenlight this project.

I'm very happy that the Broccoli's and Saltzman's are on such good speaking terms again. It seems that the Broccoli estate wants to get clear of all the feuds and lawsuits that really harmed the franchise during "Cubby"s reign as producer (Blofeld, SPECTRE, Casino Royale, the Saltzman's: all problems are over it seems).

    "James Bond: The Musical"

    No.
  • It seems to me that I remember a Mad Magazine version of a Bond musical being published back in the '60s, with Mort Drucker artwork depicting the visage of Sean Connery... "Bentley with the Blond in Front" sung to the tune of "Surrey with the Fringe on Top," etc. I can't really imagine a "serious" Bond musical, it would have to be camp to one degree or another. Interesting news, though...

Surely this must be a hoax. It could mean good news however for the production of Bond 25, as the "musical", released in 2017, could be released in conjunction it.

Aw thought for a sec based off the title that we were getting another rival Bond film ala NSNA :( Sounds like a weird idea, a Bond musical, I'm sure some people will be interested though.

There has never been and idea in the film industry more worse than a Jinx spin-off.

Easy: Halle Berry as Jinx meets Halle Berry as Catwoman. It would lose $$$ in droves!

Oh please can we not go off on one about this if it is true and I am yet to be convinced about that
I don't think for one moment that either Barbara or Micheal would let just any old tat apear on stage even if there was imput from any of the Saltzman Family

Spider-Man the musical wasn't film. Howard the Duck was actually an amusing comic book in its original incarnation, so the idea of transforming it into a movie wasn't a bad idea per se. It's just that the execution of the idea was so badly done.

I assume the fact people are immediately discussing the merits of a Jinx film pretty much sums up how bereft of interest anyone here would be in James Bond: The Musical. Terrible idea.
  • And now that I've clicked on the link at the top of this page, I see the 007 Mad musical can be viewed on the "Broadway World" site referenced. Cool! Even if you don't want to see a Bond musical, Mort Drucker's depiction of Connery-as-Bond is totally worth seeing!

Actually, I greatly despise musicals as well :-P. Although I found it worth mentioning this, as it is related to Harry Saltzman and James Bond....in ways one would not expect I might say hehe.

A scene from the musical with Pierce Brosnan as Bond:

"Bondgirl: Hey driver, where are we going? I swear. My nerves are showing.
Bond: Set your hopes up way too high, the living is in the way we die.
Together: Oh, oh, oh, oh. In the living daylights.
Tanner and M enter in the invisible car singing:
Oh, oh, oh, oh. In the living daylights".

    Please, no.

Quite frankly I'm surprised that BB would greenlight this. Seems like a terrible idea.

Memories of that Spider Man Broadway debacle from a few years back come to mind.

A play focusing on a specific aspect of a Bond novel or something....now that I could live with.

I think we all know who should play Bond in the musical

April 1965 issue of Mad. The writer was Frank Jacobs. 007 (referred to as James Bomb) goes after ICECUBE, which is towing the U.K. to the North Pole. The head of ICECUBE is revealed to be Mike Hammer, who's annoyed at 007 for stealing away all his book sales.
  • And then...in the MAD "Man From U.N.C.L.E." spoof, Bond himself was revealed as the shadowy bad guy who wanted Solo & Ilya out of the way...why exactly? So they'd stop polluting the marketplace w/ 2nd rate spy knock-offs? Something like that. MAD was positively prescient if you ask me...
