Confessions of Bond fans - Horrific Destruction of Bond items

PropertyOfALadyPropertyOfALady Colders Federation CEO
I have a confession to make. This is my Casino Royale Blu-ray. I used it for test purposes, because I have two discs of the movie that work just fine and I needed to know if scratches/dents/cracks in the plastic on the inner ring of Blus matter.

Also, I ripped the wing mirrors and right rear tire off the Bond Vanquish diecast car for fun once. It was defective and I got a replacement.

So.... what Bond product horrors have you committed?

  • When I was younger—in the days before iPods and the like—I left nearly my entire CD collection in a portable sleeve holder on an airplane. Almost all of my James Bond scores were in there. That was a pretty big blow.

A note to all: the inner ring of a Blu-ray does not affect playability.

I threw away my entire VHS Bond collection as nobody would take them of my hands, I also threw away Matchbox Bond cars and Bond Cassettes. I have never actively destroyed any items though, I tell a lie I tore up Bond posters I had
  • When I was younger (10 or 11), my parents bought me the GoldenEye Grip Game made by Tiger. I had an argument with a friend, got mad, and threw it down on the concrete and broke it. Only had it for 2 days. Now, I understand they are EXTREMELY rare to come by. Definitely regret it.

  • Way back in the day, I cut up my original GoldenEye N64 box for an art project.

Pains me just to write that. I could probably sell the box on its own for a couple hundred bucks on eBay if it was still in good condition.

Heart breaking stuff @PropertyOfALady - I hope when you broke the second wing mirror off you said 'I wasn't using that one either'.

Luckily I was 12 when I got into Bond - so most of my 007 stuff was respected and remains intact (I have plenty of Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Batman horror stories from my earlier years however!)

I cut up the Living Daylights Starlog magazine and about ten years ago I threw out a bunch of Bond paperbacks. They were mostly continuation novels from mid-era Gardner but a couple of early pan Fleming books too. I ended up buying them all again - but that wasn't too costly.

I accidentally snapped off one of the target-seeking shotguns off of my diecast Vanquish and have never been able to forgive myself.

I also disposed of my entire Bond VHS collection about ten years after I switched to DVD and had never re-watched any of the tapes since. The DVDs are awaiting the same fate (except for some I managed to give away) since I've had everything on Blu-ray for years by now.

I once owned one of the Corgi GF DB5s (age 10 or 11) and because it was a bit defective and stained ... I repainted it (horribly).

Well, at least you didn't really destroy it then!

Although I didn t destroy it, I did trade off the first James Bond comics magazine that I ever read at the age of three or four, RIVER OF DEATH by Lawrence and Horak. My first encounter with the Bond character, and I regret it now.

I don't think I ever destroyed a piece of Bond paraphernalia...although the first copy of YOLT I ever read was a few decades old and brittle, and the pages kind of fell out uncontrollably as I turned them. No idea where that book is now, so at the very least I suppose I lost a Bond item.

No idea where they disappeared, but I lost my copies of TSWLM and FYEO (the books). I don t miss TSWLM, but I sorely miss FYEO.

Well, I wouldn't have put it on a car like that. That being said, while it shows a lack of taste and respect for car esthetics, I fully support the message, given what we have to face today.

I was, like all kids I guess, an avid collector of clippings back then. And I collected a few about james Bond (an article here, a feature there). In the 90s, I decided to do a bit of spring cleaning and threw them away. Same with some issues of Bondage and 007 Magazine I had. But my Bond collection is quite extensive despite that loss, and not likely to shrink anytime soon.

Was it ever awkward for you explaining the charges for your Bondage magazines on your credit card statements?

I bet. He was a Simple Minds fan as well, and subscribed to the SM magazine, too.

I did this too! With Humbrol model aeroplane paint. I've since upgraded to a slightly less tatty one.

I've thrown away a lot of boxes from Bond toys and so on, and I regret that a bit.

On the other side of the coin, I have hung on to empty crisp packets and chocolate bar wrappers...

I inflicted horrible scratches on QoS tonight. It'll give out one day probably.

Does this version have the map main menu? I might pick it up for the eventuality that it does crap out.

Not necessarily--it could have been a magnetic sticker. I know several people who had them.

No. In fact, the check I made (didn't have a debit card then) were made to the seller (a comic book shop in Paris), not to the magazine.

It may have been called the US James Bond Fan Club at the time. I don't think a check would've been made out to the magazine itself.

I do recall being glad finding an older copy of Bondage while surfing eBay at work a decade or so ago and getting a funny look from a colleague and had to explain it was a James Bond fan magazine.

True, @Revelator, but some damage goes beyond mere adhesive or magnet.

In 2002, Blockbuster was giving out free mugs promoting the upcoming release of DAD. I got one. It was black and had a grey 007 logo on it. I loved it, and I loved how I could pour Coca-Cola on it and it would blend perfectly with the color of the mug. Damn thing fell and broke to pieces. I really should get another one made. Yeah, I'll do that. DAD mug, you shall soon return to life!!

Thought I'd revive this thread with my own story of Bond item destruction. It's a bit of a strange one, this. It usually is with me.

The first Ian Fleming Bond novels that I ever bought I found at a summer fair in a local town on Saturday 5th August 1995. They were the 1960s Pan spider's web blue edition of Dr. No and the Pan film tie-in edition of You Only Live Twice.

Sadly and inexplicably a few years ago I found the YOLT tie-in edition lying below a window in my sitting room. It had become displaced during the redecoration of my bedroom when stuff had been cleared out and moved around. It seems that a slug had gotten into the house below the front door (don't ask) and had proceeded to eat away parts of the back cover of the book. It had left a few kind of irregular jigsaw pieces missing from the back cover, along the outer edge. I was of course gutted as it was one of my first Bond novels. Happily, I've since found two good condition replacements in the wild for this particular edition though I believe I still have the damaged YOLT tie-in novel somewhere too. Nostalgia and sentimentality clearly dies hard.
