I enjoyed the Bourne Identity the camera was more stable in that one, the next two were average, I have not bothered with the last two films.
    +1

Doug Liman has made a few good films over the years.
Agreed. I personally find him a decent director. Shame he's not as popular as he used to be the past decade.

I watched The Wall a few days ago, I have issues with the writing, though Liman directs the film well. I think Liman and Cruise are still doing a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow/Live Die Repeat
Is that the one with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and John Cena? I have to admit it didn’t exactly capture my interest, hence I’m not rushing to see it. The sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, however, is in the works. I loved that film.

That's right Cena and Taylor Johnson, it was on Amazon Prime so watched it on there its OK, it's a similar premise to Phonebooth

@Major_Boothroyd Thanks. It’s certainly not one of the best, but it features some terrific elements that can’t be ignored. What I dislike most about ranking the Bonds, even though it’s fun, is knowing certain ones I still like a lot will end up in a seemingly low place.

I am happy about your rather positive assessent of the film. I really love this film so much and my enjoyment is hardly ever reduced by the film.

I often hear that the film drags, especially in the San Francisco part but I find that the story is actually put together very well. I guess we all have different opinions on what a good pacing is.

    Octopussy

OP is pure fun. It was also bottom-tier like AVTAK at one point in my ranking, but has shot up over time. It pains me to end up ranking it as low as I have, but that goes to show how much I love the Bond films in general.

Moore, while a little old, is still in mostly top form. The PTS is fun, and the title song is a personal favorite of mine. Kamal Khan and Gobinda are pretty good villains, though not quite my favorites. The Bond girls are average IMO. I like Vijay. Not a big fan of Magda or Orlov though. Generally, the action scenes are really fun and exciting; I particularly enjoy the plane scene at the end. It's just corny, good fun most of the time. OP is one of those sillier Bond films that just works for me. I tend to prefer the serious ones, but still, OP has its own kind of awesome magic. Pretty good soundtrack too.

There are a few sections of the film I'm not too crazy about (the scenes with Orlov and Gogol in particular), but they don't seriously hurt the film. More than anything, it can't be higher simply because I enjoy the films above it even more. And occasionally, while mostly enjoyable, the corniness can be a little much (the tarzan yell...). It's one of my favorites of the sillier Bond entries - a very colorful and lighthearted Bond outing. Good stuff.

I quite enjoy OP, but am not a fan of the scenes in India. I find them a bit too cartoony and the humour farcical. Particularly the rickshaw chase and fight at the street festival, the jungle chase and the finale. It didn't work for me in the way that the humour during the chases in LALD/TMWTGG did. The rest I have no problem with.

The odd one out of those three to me is TMWTGG. It had the least effective humor and action of those for me. Barring Christopher Lee, I don’t particularly like a lot about that one.

It seems to be a view shared by many as it's not a highly ranked film here. I've never had a problem with the Kung Fu sequences, the boat chase with the kid, the sumo pant squeeze or JW and I think that's why I'm able to enjoy it so much.

    For Your Eyes Only

One of those really good Bond films with minimal flaws. FYEO is memorable for being the most down-to-earth of all the Moore adventures, and Moore himself is at his absolute best. Indeed, this one is a treat.

The PTS is one of my favorites in the entire scenes. Yes, Blofeld’s death is a little silly, but to me it was so satisfying. I like the title song; TMWTGG aside, I like the title songs of the Moore era a lot. Melina is one of the best Bond girls, though Bibi is one of the worst. Kristatos and Locque aren’t top-tier villains, but they still work perfectly for the story. There are several great side characters too like Columbo and Luigi. My biggest issue, besides Bibi, is the bad soundtrack, which might be the weakest in the series overall. It would have been nice to have a great soundtrack compliment this film. Still, not every track is bad, and there is a ton to like about the film otherwise. Not using music in the climax was smart. It worked.

As I’ve said before, of all 7, I think this was Moore’s best Bond performance, and definitely one of his best Bond films. John Glen took the series back where it needed to be after MR (up next...), and though OP and AVTAK made things sillier, it helps give FYEO its identity as Moore’s most Connery-esque, classic Bond adventure. It just works, and it’s a darn good Bond film.

Agreed FoxRox, the track from the soundtrack "Submarine" is one of my favorites across the whole series. Bill Conti is a fine composer, his Rocky scores are very special. Perhaps not the best choice for James Bond however..

Next up, Moonraker. AVTAK is set in France, MR was filmed in France. Plus California. AVTAK is the only post MR film, to look back yearningly at MR’s broad humour, and say “I’ll have some of that!”.

    Moonraker

For a while MR has occupied my bottom spot. I’m happy to say it has managed to go up one, thanks to some appreciation for certain elements in the film. This viewing went a lot better than my one for DAD did.

The PTS is at least a Top 15 one, and the title song has become one of my favorites in the series. Moore is fine, but I have referred to this as his least unique and most autopilot performance, and I stand by that. He has some good moments, but I still prefer his other Bond performances (and movies). Drax and Jaws (until turning good) are decent villains. Soundtrack is good. Don’t really care for the Bond girls though; IMO, both Corinne and Goodhead are sort of dull. I enjoy most of the film’s action scenes, until we hit the laser battle in space. It just becomes a generic sci-fi parody in the final act. This is what really hurts; had the last act been good, I’d probably raise it a couple more spots. As it is, I sort of lose interest once they go into outer space. It just doesn’t really feel like Bond to me at that point. Drax’s death is okay though.

There are several other things that bother me: Jaws falling in love, the double take pigeon
    - really mostly the cringey stuff. I can handle silliness in my Bond films, but this one, like DAD, goes a little too overboard. I don’t hate MR, but I have never warmed up to Bond going to space. Even if it was done today, I’d have my doubts I’d like it that much. MR must remain near the bottom, but it does have elements I like. Reminded me of my SP viewing; they’re disappointing, but still feature a fair amount of good stuff. It’s just something about those 4th Bond films for the actors post-Connery...

    The Spy Who Loved Me

Looks like this will be my last one for a while, but what a one to go out on! I am having to move very suddenly, and that will put off my Bondathon for a little while; hoping to resume sooner than later. Anyway, TSWLM is a longtime favorite of mine that holds a lot of nostalgic appeal (wasn't around when it first came out, but it had a big impact on my childhood). It was as wonderful as ever.

It's not hard to see why Roger Moore called TSWLM his favorite Bond outing, because it's got it all. And Moore did a terrific job as Bond in the film! He has some of his funniest and best dramatic moments here. Anya, aka Triple X, is a great Bond girl. Stromberg is a really good villain (seems to be underrated), and Jaws is an even better henchman. The side Bond girls and Bond villains are all pretty good as well (I did put down Saunder in another thread, but he's not the worst Bond character by any means). I love the aqua theme in this movie. The action scenes are all very good, and include most of the best in the Moore era (the PTS, the car chase, the fights with Jaws to name some). The humor and drama are balanced pretty well. The story is among my favorites in the series. Egypt and Sardinia are among my favorite locations used in the series as well. There's just so much I love about this film. The title song is a classic, and I love the soundtrack too. Oh, and the PTS is 10/10 - actually 11/10. Too good...

TSWLM is one of the truly elite Bond films. It helps that I have a lot of fond memories of it and have watched it at crazy moments in my life - including now! It's definitely the greatest film of Moore's era, as well as one of the greatest of the whole franchise. Lewis Gilbert directed 3 Bond films, and this was his masterpiece. Any problems I have with this film are nitpicks. This was such a fun watch; I love TSWLM. At least for now, it has topped GE... a big deal for me. This has also been my favorite Bondathon thus far.

    I agree on TSWLM. Epic.

Watched GoldenEye again and posted the first part of my review.

While vastly different to TSWLM, GoldenEye is as iconic. It's actually puzzling I had it so low in my initial ranking. Too many 60s films blocking the way to the top though!

    The Living Daylights

I mentioned in the Bond comments as you watch thread how TLD is on the verge of being one of my favorite Bond films. It's a really good Bond film for the most part, but two key things prevent it from reaching higher numbers: a) weak villains and b) dull third act until the plane climax. I definitely still prefer LTK, but TLD is a definitely a good one. Had it included a particularly strong villain, it might have had a better chance as a favorite.

Dalton does fairly well in the film, but I think he's better in LTK. Kara is a good Bond girl, and the supporting characters like Saunders and Pushkin are pretty good too. Georgi and Whitaker aren't bad as villains, but for Bond standards, they are definitely on the lower end of the spectrum. Necros is a little more interesting, but still not quite among the greatest Bond villains. John Barry's soundtrack is terrific. The title song is alright. The PTS is one of the absolute best in the series, and in general, the first two thirds of the movie are top-tier Bond material. Unfortunately, it hits a roadblock with the jail scene, and doesn't regain steam until Bond fights Necros on the plane IMO.

Despite a few shortcomings I have with it, there's too much about TLD to like for me to rank it too low. I don't think it can ever quite reach my Top 10, but it has a lot of good stuff in it and holds up well overall in the series. Would have been interesting to see Dalton do a third, but I wouldn't change out Brosnan's GE seeing as I like it even more than Dalton's outings. Anyway, I decided to give TLD a slight edge over QOS in my ranking; it was really close, but that's what I will stick to for now.

Not sure if I will get to AVTAK tomorrow or not. We will see.

He overacts in LTK. In TLD he is natural and plays Bond as he should be played.
I dont think he overacts in LTK. But i agree he was more natural in TLD. But LTK was a very different beast to TLD. It was stated in one review of LTK that Bond comes across as almost psychotic and you can view it that way when you consider his best friend maimed and wife murdered which brings his own loss of Tracy back into focus and considering he was pivotal in Sanchez capture there is the guilt that he is somewhat responsible! One of my favourite moments in LTK is the finale when Bond has just torched Sanchez and sits down and you can see the revulsion in his face as he realises his relentless pursuit of justice has taken a toll! Despite me loving TLD it has to be remebered that it wasnt written soecifically for Dalton and was only tweaked for him. It makes it all the more tragic that we didnt get a third film from Dalton, it would have been really interesting to see what way they went with him. Certain ly more interestingly than the spectacularly bland GE!
  • edited January 2018 Posts: 11,189
He isn't that scary in LTK though. You can often SEE Dalton acting in the film. A thespian pulling out his acting techniques (the scowling facial expressions).

Del Toro's Dario is a far more sinister presence.

As I've said before DT's later performance in Sicario as a psychotic cop avenging his murdered family makes Dalton's vengeful, "psychotic" Bond look tame in comparison.

Del Toro is utterly terrifying in that film.

    IAN FLEMINGS GOLDFINGER
As it appears on screen! First hour of this I was stiil loving. Great pts (though doesnt Connery make some funny faces when he is taking the timer from the bag?). TB gets a lot of praise for its title sequence but i think Robert Brownjohns credits are better here (love the cheeky golf ball going down the cleavage). Gert Frobe and Harold Sakata are a marvellous villain and henchman. Love the music cue that John Barry gives Oddjob. The golf match, the Q scene the car chase with machine gun wielding granny, the laser on the table. All great iconic scenes After that things slow a bit, moreso on this viewing. Bond sitting in his cell doing nothing and Goldfinger explaining his big scheme is less interesting than i remember and i really dont like the scene in the barn with Pussy Galore, silly, or maybe its that i dont find Honor Blackman very attractive? Shirley Eaton far sexier imho, wish their roles were reversed.
Things pick up again for the finale. The different angled shots of the soldiers falling as the planes fly over, daft as it is, are still impressive. The fight with Oddjob isnt as exciting as i recall, though his death is spectacular and a nice echo of Capungos pts death! Goldfingers last gasp at killing Bond in the plane is great fun, though the model plane crashing into the sea looks like it was staged in a bath! All in all a mixed viewing for a film i hold in usual high regard as it was my first intro to 007 on TV many moons ago!

Don't know if I would rank the GF title sequence above the TB one, but the projection idea is very clever, isn't it.

This is how I feel after each viewing of GF. It's really a lovely first half, then it just goes apart, almost. Still entertaining, but not at all the same we get in the first half.

In 2017 that scene isn't the most "fortunate" in lack of a better way to put it. I do however think that Honor Blackman is one of the best (and best looking) Bond girl actresses. We are a bit spoiled in that regard with GF. Shirley Eaton doesn't fail to make an impression, and Tania Mallet as Tilly Masterson isn't bad either, lack of screen time aside.
