I'm almost compelled to move it up a notch into my top ten, but that would mean demoting LTK, and I can't do that. So it will have to stay at eleven.

    Very!

I just finished LALD. Loved it. One of the best viewings I've had in years.

Sheriff pepper is awesome in that movie - I think he's fantastic- what do u think?
He's much better here than in TMWTGG. I've always liked ole JW personally. His wife in the later film is a hoot also. The boat chase gets a lot of flack, but I've always really enjoyed it as it's very atmospheric and real. It's refreshing to see a sequence like that without CGI or model work.

Yeah in my opinion, the boat chase is by far the best thing in the movie and really adds to the entertainment

Alright so me and my friends have been watching a bond film a week and this is the consensus so far
(My friends opinions not mine)(best at the top)
frwl - (9/10)great spy story with great villains and they loved kerim bey
Then dr no- (8.5/10)they liked the James Bond Spy feel and the atmosphere

Then lastly Goldfinger-(8/10) they though that while it was enjoyable it was a bit too funny and their were a few too many plot holes and not enough bond doing anything however still held in high regard.

So it's going pretty well so far as they think these films are all stellar so far. next up thunderball and I haven't told them my opinion yet thankfully but im very interested to see what happens

I feel as if James Bond is a secondary character in Goldfinger.

If you look at the film,Bond actually does nothing, not even saving the US soldiers from the 'deadly' Omega nerve gas or stopping the bomb going off..its probably Bond's least heroic mission..its the DB5 that makes GF,not Bond.

I created a thread about this if you want to check it out.

That's a fair statement to make. I understand why people don't like Goldfinger (much like the way people don't like Skyfall). My viewpoint on it is that the more secondary Bond is in the film, when done tactfully, the better the picture it is. Bond is equal to the dimensions of his nemesis. Goldfinger is unequivocally, in my mind, the ultimate villain of the franchise. He larger than life in an audacious way, thus elevating Bond to be his counterpart. It's addition by subtraction.

Goldfinger breaks the mold for Bond up to that time. Before then, there were serious moments wasted on film with Bond applying a lock of his hair to doors to monitor activity in his room and those such things. In Goldfinger, those moments are largely reduced. When applied, they are extremely engaging for the audience -- like when he is being spied on in the bathroom on his flight to Baltimore. I consider the whole thing a masterpiece and would likely put it in the No. 1 spot if not for finding a greater connection to Bond in Casino Royale and Skyfall, both in terms of performance depth and contemporary relevance.

@Mansfield, I have SF & GE as top 10 films. I agree that Bond is somewhat secondary in SF, and I think the same is true to a lesser extent in GE. Although Bond may be in a lot of scenes in GE, I believe it's the charisma of the supporting cast that give the film its spark and liveliness. I feel the same about SF. It's truly an ensemble.

Just speaking for myself, I don't feel that way about GF. I think Bond is front and centre, and although Auric is a flamboyant & larger than life villain (a bit like Silva), I strangely can't get enthused about the latter half of the film (after the iconic laser sequence) which has a very 60's kitsch flavour to it (with the soldiers falling down as Pussy flies over with her girls etc.). If I'm being truly honest, I actually prefer watching YOLT & DAF.

This is definitely true. The key to these movies' success is that all the supporting characters have their own motivations and traits independent of Bond. Too often all the characters other than Bond (and maybe the villain and the Bond girl) are just appendages to Bond's mission.

I do think that Bond is a bit inert in Goldfinger, and it's the closest the movie has to a flaw (in so far as it's a Bond movie). But it actually works to GF's advantage, since it makes it seem like Bond actually has to struggle (compare it to Thunderball, where Bond effortlessly walks all over SPECTRE, except the one scene at the Junkanoo).

I agree with both of you. It's more that Bond shares the main spotlight with Goldfinger than him being a secondary character. Put another way, character depth is independent of Bond. I think that style of narrative is superior because it allows us to place Bond (and likely even ourselves) in a situation rather than embodying the situation, which just isn't very lifelike. Perhaps some of the fantasy element is lost, but it does strengthen the element overall.

People finally come to their senses

For me it's actually the other way around. DAD started in my Top 10 in 2002 and only fell out of it some years ago. Since then it's continuously slipping down. But it's unlikely it will fall any further.
It's still one of the most easy to re-watch, like DAF or MR or QOS.

Just finished the first 20 films in random order. I really took my time for it, started in the autumn of 2016 and just finished TLD to end the whole endeavour.

This would be my new ranking of the original timeline:

    1. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    2. From Russia with Love
    3. Licence to Kill
    4. Thunderball
    5. Live and Let Die
    6. The Living Daylights
    7. GoldenEye
    8. For Your Eyes Only
    9. Dr. No
    10. The Man with the Golden Gun
    11. Tomorrow Never Dies
    12. Goldfinger
    13. You Only Live Twice
    14. The Spy Who Loved Me
    15. Diamonds Are Forever
    16. Die Another Day
    17. A View to a Kill
    18. Moonraker
    19. The World Is Not Enough
    20. Octopussy

Now it's time for the rebooted series, I'm going to watch The Craig Bonds chronologically and then insert them to this list.

I'm finding my ranking is forever changing in 2017. More so than ever before. Watching the films in random order, but in chronological order of the actor playing Bond has been an interesting experience for me. Started with Pierce Brosnan and moved onto the Daniel Craig films. Currently making my way through the Roger Moore movies and then I'll visit the Timothy Dalton ones. Then onto the Sean Connery films, ending with OHMSS and George Lazenby.

A few weeks ago my ranking looked like this...

    1. From Russia With Love
    2. Dr.No
    3. Casino Royale
    4. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    5. The Living Daylights
    6. Octopussy
    7. Goldfinger
    8. The Spy Who Loved Me
    9. Thunderball
    10. Goldeneye
    11. Live And Let Die
    12. For Your Eyes Only
    13. You Only Live Twice
    14. Spectre
    15. Licence To Kill
    16. Skyfall
    17. Diamonds Are Forever
    18. Die Another Day
    19. Moonraker
    20. The Man With The Golden Gun
    21. Tomorrow Never Dies
    22. A View To A Kill
    23. Quantum Of Solace
    24. The World Is Not Enough

The Man With The Golden Gun could easily move up a couple of spots, and switch places with DAF. Really enjoyed Golden Gun this time. Haven't enjoyed it so much in ages.
The Spy Who Loved Me might go up a spot. Along with FYEO. Though I'm always left in a quandary as too which films to drop down. LTK has often taken the hit, along with SF and even my beloved OP has dropped to sixth spot. Oh the hardships of being a Bond fan sometimes. ;)
