  Most of the folks here have never heard of Melvin Goines. He was one of the top bluegrass musicians in the early years of that genre and was an active player & promoter of the form right up through his death yesterday. The company I work for had a relationship with Melvin and I often answered the phone to hear his voice on the other line: "This is Melvin Goines calling long distance." When Melvin first started using telecommunications, a long distance call was expensive and important, and he never lost the habit of informing the recipient of his calls that he was calling long distance. So we would pass the calls to their intended recipient, "Hey David (or Richard or Don or whoever) it's long distance!" We'll miss those long distance calls. RIP Melvin Goines, the hills will ring forever with your sound. Same for Dr. Ralph Stanley, for that matter, another bluegrass legend lost just a few weeks back...

  Sad news with the passing of Kenny Baker. An unusual actor as far as parts he's played goes, in that he will be remembered for playing R2D2 in the star wars films.
  Six Star Wars films he's appeared in (plus other work of course), yet I'd wager hardly any male who frequents this forum, or is aged 18 + would not know who he was.
  RIP Kenny, thanks for bringing a lovable robot to life.
