Yes, both SPECTRE and Quantum have genuinely inventive, brilliant plots. The problem is the focus is still on action over suspense/intrigue. I wish we could return to the Terrence Young style of Bond sleuthing/uncovering.

Here's my Son's basic thoughts on the Bond films of this Century (he's 17 and NOT a Bond fan):

    DAD- "It's just ridiculous."
    CR- "It's really long."
QOS- "Okay, that was pretty good. It never dragged."
SF- "Three hours of my life wasted."
SP- "Finally, a really good one. I'd actually watch that again."

    B-)

Not too far, but he completely dissed DAD (even the swordfight) whereas I actually have fun with it.

Whatever brings in new fans and keeps our man alive.
  • The DAD sword fight was outright silly. The picture is actually doing okay until that horrible backward dive by Jinx in Cuba, then the rails come off the film.

For me, the appearance of Jinx is the beginning of the end for DAD. Up to that moment DAD was middling Bond fare, which is about 50 steps up from where it finished.

DAD is so painful in so many respects...
  • As do I. It's a terrible picture, after that backwards dive. What were they thinking?

    Likewise for you and SP.

I have DAD above DAF and recently it has overtaken TMWTGG for me. But I consider those three movies to be very poor films anyway.

Watched SP a few times now, and it is still a very good Bond film. The Hinx train fight is one of the best fight scenes in the entire series, and Craig arguably gives his best performance as Bond, which is more in line with 60's Connery, TB era.

I think it is better than SF, mainly because in that film Craig looks awful as 007 in it for most part. I can't see beyond that skinhead he dons.

Current rankings would be something like this -

    1. GF
    2. OHMSS
    3. CR
    4. LTK
    5. SP
    6. FRWL
    7. SF
    8. QoS
    9. TB
    10. LALD
    11. TMWTGG
    12. TLD
    13. Dr. No
    14. DAF
    15. FYEO
    16. YOLT
    17. MR
    18. TSWLM
    19. GE
    20. TND
    21. OP
    22. TWINE
    23. AVTAK
    24. DAD

I've given it fourteen years now, since I saw it in 2002. At one point, it was third last, but that's the highest its ever gotten on my list. It's reverted back to last now, because I've realized that I couldn't get anything from even Moore's most outrageous moments to match DAD in sheer stupidity.

Jetsetwilly, that's a mighty fine list, we share 7 out of 10. But I think you have TLD way too low! No. 2 for me. I'm delighted to see you have TSWLM at 18, same as me. After GE I think its most over-rated!
Birdleson is still trying to give hope re DAD. Sorry, for me it will always be bottom of the list. Dire Bond movie in every way! And it will never change. I left the cinema in total despair when I saw it, and my attitude towards it hasn't changed one iota! I never put NSNA on my list, but if I do it will probably be just ahead, bad and all that it is, it doesn't reach the nadir that is DAD!

I don't remember where I rank DAD. Not last though. DAD was I feel the film the director envisioned ...same with QoS.

I don't get that feeling with SP. Like no one was really sure ..and I'm sorry Craig was great but the script really didn't give him much. I'm neutral on Craig in SP.

But back to my point as much as I like parts of SP I feel the most cheated and betrayed by that film. Sure it's an attempt to recapture classic more Moore like Bond but it didnt.

SP remains at the bottom. I grew up on Bond ...a Bond film should never lesson my interest in Bond. They even tarnished Craig's previous namely SF by bringing it down with it.

And the potential of B25 being a forced retreated sequel doesn't help.

No SP is the only Bond film that succeeded in mucking up past and future films. Yay EoN.

Just to clarify your position, you actually rank SP below DAD?

I get what you're saying, and I have been vocal in my criticisms of SP, but it only has to muck up the past if you let it. As others have mentioned,a s well, the first three Craig Bonds were made without SP in mind, and I continue to watch them that way. It's a choice that you can make.

As to the future, if EON decides it ignore Swann, the Oberhauser connection and so forth in future films, no problem. But I fear in this case you may be correct.
I agree. I choose to completely ignore the useless (imho) retcon when I watch the first 3 Craig outings, and I'm actually enjoying them more these days (because I realize they are something to cherish).

It is my preference that they dispense with this storyline and do a soft reboot (with or without Craig) and then the future won't be messed up for me either.

It is possible for them to make B25 enjoyable for me, even keeping the same cast, storyline and what not, but the chances are slim. If they choose to go this route, I hope for a far more interesting, taut, and original film than SP.

Great taste Mathis. And you are totally right about DAD...I think NSNA just edges it as slightly better, but as you say - both abysmal films.

I do like TLD. I just think the script had too many Moore hangovers, unlike LTK which really plays to Daltons' strengths. But one thing TLD does have is a great soundtrack, sadly Barry's last.

I'm currently doing a Bondathon. I'm watching them in the order they were made, currently in the middle of Moonraker. Once I make it to SPECTRE I'll give it a proper ranking. I did see it a couple of times while it was in theaters and from what I remember I have it at least in my top ten, if not five.

#8. I thoroughly enjoyed Spectre. The only films I rank higher are TB, CR, DN, FRWL, GF, OHMSS and SF. AKA the cream of the crop.
  • #18. It's a step above SF for me just for being closer to the older Bonds. It's worse in almost every other respect. Overall, it's enjoyable, but there were a couple of cringeworthy moments in there.
  • #5 it's been there for a while now .

    Still No 1

If at all it could fall behind GE, TLD and OHMSS one day. But not today.
  • I can't help but think that if this movie followed QOS or DAD it would be regarded by the public and hardcore fans as a much better film because it would have exceeded mediocre expectations rather than failed to reach great heights. Out of the 6 most favoured Bond films in the current elimination game, only two (FRWL and GF) are consecutive.

Personally, I think Spectre is a comfortable top 10 entry, maybe a shade behind Skyfall, with two of the entire franchise's best scenes (Mexico, train), a stunningly beautiful middle section from Rome to Tangiers, a strong ensemble of characters who can (apart from C) all be further developed if Craig and Waltz continue, and a fine balance between humour and 'danger'. As with QOS, where the film will eventually settle depends on the next installment, in particular how they deal with Blofeld. As Zhou Enlai once said, it's still too early to tell.
  • It has fallen to #14 for me. I now consider it to be a 3-star film as opposed to a 4-star film. There's just too much wrong with it. And I only see it falling further in the future. I mean I want to like it but it's flawed in almost every aspect really.

Unfortunately I have to agree. It wouldn't take much to turn it into the best Bond movie but alas it's not the case

I am not a big fan of the film mainly because Spectre does not really offer something new. Of course you cannot redevelop the complete franchise but I think each film should always create something unique and bring something new to the frachise. I don't know if Spectre has realy delivered that. For me it rather seems like a best-of film ...

Future generations probably won't mind that since they won't watch the Bond films in chronological order. Then iti is less obvious that Spectre only copies element from older Bond films.
