Star Trek-Motion Picture- I wanted to like this film a lot. It was beautifuly shot, but my god, some scenes went on FOREVER. Overall, it was underwhelming. 5/10
Star Trek II: Wrath of Kahn- This is of course the one I was waiting for that I was told I would love. It didn't disappoint either. I even did my research and watched "Space Seed" beforehand. For somebody who saw and enjoyed "Into Darkness" first, this didn't suffer. I thought it was exciting, well acted, and had a great emotional payoff. 9/10
Star Trek III- Liked it more than I thought I would. Had a good villain. Stealing the Enterprise was an amazing scene. But it felt a little empty all things considered. Obviously the second film of a three film story. 7/10
Star Trek IV- I knew what to expect and I still really enjoyed it. Enjoyed the tone shift from the previous darker films. Comedic timing was good and overall it just was a good time watching. 8.5/10
Star Trek V- Oh man...bad comedy, bad direction (thanks Will). Story concept kept my interest though. But it was tough to get through. 4/10
Star Trek VI- I REALLY enjoyed this one. Loved the Cold War comparisons. A really nice sendoff for the crew. 9/10
*I watched a lot of The Next Generation and absoulutly loved it.
Star Trek Generations- Aside from Kirk's death, which was really horrible, this film wasn't bad. I love the Next Gen cast a lot so it was nice to see them get the movie treatment. Villain was ok. But a decent Trek film. 7/10
Star Trek First Contact- My favorite Trek film. The Borg are the perfect Trek villain and everybody is on point. The story of the first warp drive was super interesting and Piccard basically becoming Cap Ahab was amazing. Was it a little empty? Sure, but I loved it. 10/10
Star Trek Insurrection- What a disappointment. Same cast, director, writers as First Contact but it was just so...boring. More like an extended TV episode than a film. I also hated how the people hated technology but used it anyway. 3/10
Star Trek Nemesis- I actually thought this one was ok. Not great, and not a great sendoff for the Next Gen crew, but I liked it. Data's death was sad, the story was personal for Piccard, and I liked Tom Hardy a lot. Could have been better though, not hard to see why it didn't do well. 6/10
Star Trek- I've seen this film a bunch and still love it. Great pace, great acting, great action. And now I see that it really pays respect to the Trek universe. 9/10
Star Trek Into Darkness- I still really like this film, but not really as a Trek film I think. Cummberbach is fun to watch and I think the story is pretty interesting. Looking forward to Trek 3. 7.5/10
So there you have it. I've really enjoyed watching these films for the most part and I realize what I've been missing. I'll have to watch some of the other shows that are on Netflix. Live long and prosper!
And there you have my three favourites.
Anyway, this would my ranking of all 12 films so far:
01. --> 9.5/10: "Star Trek 8: First Contact" (1996)
Marvellous sci-fi thriller. At times very Ridley Scott-esque. Some insight into how 'First Contact' was established. Also a metaphore on how we need to value and protect values like peace, democracy and other western enlightened ideas.
02. --> 9.5/10: "Star Trek 9: Insurrection" (1998)
Completely underestimated gem. This particular film has so much theme into it, that makes you discuss current-day politics. Just think about how forced 're-location' of massive numbers of people is still happening. Islamic State? Ukraine?
03. --> 8.5/10: "Star Trek 12: Into Darkness" (2013)
Yes, it felt many times like copy-paste work of "TWOK", but then it's also a movie about politicians going rogue, having no mandates. Admiral Marcus reminded me a lot of former president Bush in many ways. Links to DS9 as well, with Section31.
04. --> 8.0/10: "Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country" (1991)
Like "Into Darkness", full of political metaphores. Klingons are off course the Russians. And I can't help thinking how much of it is happening again today. Flight MH17? Need I say more how much that stuff is escalating?
05. --> 7.5/10: "Star Trek 7: Generations" (1994)
This is quite a gentle, good movie. I like how the themes of family, loss, and generational stories are interwoven in this film. Off course you have the 22nd and 23rd century interwoven, but what about Picard's tears about the loss of René.
06. --> 6.5/10: "Star Trek 11: 2009" (2009)
The Original Series crew is rebooted for the first time. It felt very Star Wars-like though, especially seeing Spock as a kid and Kirk as a kid. The destruction of Vulcan could be seen as a metaphore to the Holocaust. I just hoped they did more with it.
07. --> 6.0/10: "Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan" (1982)
For me it's a very good revenge movie. But it just felt a bit too much like James Bond in outer space, where Khan was the Bond villain, and Kirk the angry 007 out on revenge. Acting is superb, but thematically a bit flat.
08. --> 5.5/10: "Star Trek 3: The Search For Spock" (1984)
This one for me felt like a nice space adventure. I liked the settings on Genesis. Also it was a nice sequel to "TWOK", which is also the film's weakness.
09. --> 5.5/10: "Star Trek 1: The Motion Picture" (1979)
Visually absolutely stunning. Even Kubrick-esque when you watch that long road from the Enterprise towards the center of V'ger. But indeed, at times too slow.
10. --> 4.5/10: "Star Trek 10: Nemesis" (2002)
Quite the copy of "TWOK" as well. Every aspect, from the ship-to-ship battle is copied. The only nice thing IMO was Janeway's short cameo after she got her Voyager-crew back home.
11. --> 4.5/10: "Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home" (1986)
Funny, entertaining, but personally I never really liked time travelling in "Star Trek". It feels such a cheap plot to use time-travel. I think it was done way better in "First Contact"
12. --> 2.5/10: "Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier" (1989)
The only one co-written and directed by William Shatner. And although the God-like entity makes us think about religions, it still feels flat and cheap. A movie like "Contact" is way better for such discussions.
Ooowh by the way, I love Sir Patrick Stewart as an actor. I never understood why he wasn't cast in a Bond film yet ;-). Some memorable acting from him was the rant between Lily and Picard in "First Contact" ("BLOW UP THE DAMN SHIP JEAN-LUC!! Picard: "NOOOOO!!"). Or the sequence between Admiral Dougherty and Captain Picard ("How many people does it take Admiral!!)
I loved the fact how 'villainous' the Federation had become, mainly because of those Dominion Wars.

I really expect a lot from this film. I really hope the 5-year mission that will be featured in the upcoming 50th anniversary film will turn it into a real love affair of space based exploration. I'm a bit tired of wars and other dark stuff in a Trek-film. I truly hope it'll do what movies like "Interstellar" did. A movie about space exploration, that makes Trekkies wonder again about the beautu of space travel and all its infinitive wonders.
