Just remember, one person's Citizen Kane is another person's Batman & Robin. And that person is in a mental asylum ;-)

    Comparison wise :
    Raiders = FRWL
    Temple of Doom = LTK
    Last Crusade = OHMSS
Crystal Skull = Die Another Day

Saw every one on release from 1981- 89 but not Crystal Skull until a while later after it was first released. ROTLA is the first - and best - but comparison with a Bond film ? That's a whole different area, but maybe The Spy Who Loved Me or The World Is Not Enough. Nothing overly brilliant or captivating but a damn fine adventure and time well spent. I'll give some thought about the others at another time

    Crystal Skull = Octopussy.

Jeeze, the level of hate in general here astounds me.

How about ALL movies suck? There ARE no good ones. Maybe two.

Octopussy if often said to be influenced by Indy but to me Temple of Doom seems more influenced by OP?

Don't forget the beginning of The Last Crusade where young Indy is trying to evade his pursuers in and on top of a circus train! It makes sense since Spielberg has said that the character of Indy is partly based on Bond.

Woah. Way off the mark there. Yes there's a lot of hate for DAD but Skull is way worse. To rate it on alongside OP is bang out of order.

    Without ranking all the Bonds:
Raiders = top 3 in amongst OHMSS, FRWL and CR.
Temple = Better than DAF and TMWTGG, not as good as MR or TB.
Crusade = Top half. On a par with GF, TSWLM and GE.
Skull = Beneath DAD, beneath NSNA, almost on a par with CR67. An absolute insult for which I hold Lucas 90% responsible and Spielberg and Ford 5% each for not putting their foot down and saying 'George this is shite - we ain't doing it.'

Whilst we're on that subject, is Lucas unable to come up with a decent title for for his films? 'Phantom Menace', 'Attack of the Clones', 'Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' were bloody awful.

I remember first hearing 'Phantom Menace' and I actually thought it was a joke. Kind of like the smokescreen he used whilst filming ''Return of the Jedi'.

I remember seeing Phantom Menace and thinking it was a joke. And then I realised it wasn't and the laughter was still born in my throat.

Although Lucas did make Billions from it so, he probably had the last laugh ;-)

This thread has inspired me to watch Raiders again- and I must say, it's still as great as I remember. Pure entertainment all the way through. The scene where Marion destroys the Nazi truck with the plane's gun turret reminded me of Pierce in the jet in TND's PTS. Maybe there was some influence there. As for slotting it somewhere in my Bond list- well normally I have FRWL in the top spot, and CR right on her tail. In this case, I'd probably have Raiders fighting with FRWL for top spot- or perhaps just edging it as no. 1, and although I think CR is more cleverly shot, Raiders beats it based on its pure fun factor.

It's why I put Raiders right up there with TSWLM and GF. They're the three films I can genuinely put on at any time and I know I'm going to be sat entertained for the next couple of hours with a continuous smile on my face.

TSWLM is near the top of my list too. For me, it's probably the most most entertaining of Moore's era, followed by LALD. I just think Raiders is a more consistent film, especially in regards to its fun and adventure.

If its based on quality of movie making, its arguably better than all the bond movies. Raiders is a incredibly well shot movie, soundtrack is one of the greatest. Though i am biased its one of my favourite movies.

Raiders = Goldinger and Casino Royale as top of their respective franchises IMO.

Reading all the comments posted so far, it's almost pretty unanimous that we agree Raiders is better than most, if not all the Bond films, so I guess the question to ask now is:

Do you feel saddened/disappointed that a film, which was heavily influenced by Bond, ended up being a better film than anything EON had produced before or after Raiders?

No. Like I said before, Raiders is a better stand alone movie, but Bond is a better SERIES. Given the choice, Jones or Bond, Bond wins easily for me. Now, if they'd pumped out 20 mostly good Jones movies since 1981, then I'd have to weigh things. But four movies? With two of them not even better than your 'average' Bond flick?
You wanna compare movie series than only Batman comes close. And Bond still wins. ;)

Not so much saddened, Steven Spielburg is a genius shame he never directed a Bond movie.

But at least we got his Die Hard music composer for one Bond adventure.

Coincidence it's one of my top 2 favourite Bonds? I think so...

Speaking of music, has anyone ever thought how a Bond movie would be like if John Williams did the score?

Out of curiosity i watched the first Ski scene from OHMSS with the sound turned off while listening to Duel of the Fates from Phantom Menace. John Williams would have been a great composer for a Bond film

Give it a try yourselfs if you have Duel of the Fates on MP3 or something.

One of my Favourite Bond movies and soundtracks, though agree Williams would have done a excellent score for Bond. Subtly and intensity Williams does as good as anyone.
