Thanks, that's really interesting.
The Usual Suspects first watch in 4K, no matter how many times I see this masterpiece I am in awe of Christopher McQuarrie;s script. When the credits roll I always think to myself this is one of the best films I have ever seen.
It was pretty hysterical
It was.
One of my favorite bits: "Hector Gutierrez, Department of Occupational Safety and Health. Officer Barnes, you are under arrest."
I loved that whole MI Fallout sequence. The crane scene with the car had me in stitches
Directed by Chris Columbus
It's a Netflix original so my expectations weren't high, but I did enjoy this one. There are obvious Bond connections of course with Pierce (who doesn't get too much to do but is very charming nonetheless), Jonathan Pryce, a DAD Vanquish and a Thomas Newman score.
Sure it's Britain at its most stereotypical and it has a plot that doesn't always make much sense, but it goes along pretty well, is occasionally funny (especially David Tennant's character) and it's all very cozy and mysterious.
1. There Will Be Blood (2007)
2. The Master (2012)
3. One Battle After Another (2025)
4. Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
5. Boogie Nights (1997)
6. Phantom Thread (2017)
7. Hard Eight (1996)
8. Magnolia (1999)
9. Licorice Pizza (2021)
10. Inherent Vice (2014)
Great movie.
I’d agree that calling it his magnum opus is too far (for me, nothing could top There Will Be Blood), but I still think One Battle After Another is one of his very best, and for me a strong rebound from the decent but unremarkable Licorice Pizza. I don’t blame you for liking Punch-Drunk Love more though since it’s a truly great, unique film. It’s unlikely for any two people to have the exact same PTA ranking anyway, seeing as his films are all incredibly different!
Another classic Van Damme film gets a dtv remake. Michael Jai White steps into the shoes of Van Damme, but like Scott Adkins in Hard Target 2, he deserves better than this. Michael Jai White delivers the goods as always, but the villains are completely forgettable, they can't even remotely compare with Powers Boothe in the original. And the 2 kids were really annoying, Don't bother watching. Either watch the original Sudden Death, or something else from Michael Jai White.
People having a general list that's different for all his movies proves he's a true artist. I also like Boogie Nights (2025). PTA always tries something different, and I generally enjoy his work.
It's legitimately one of my favourites.
This one's the definition of a masterpiece. It floored me and left me feeling vulnerable and emotional in so many ways.
The best "WAR" film ever ?
Spielberg's last "great" film ?
Hmmm. I never quite understood the love for this one, even though it's certainly well-made on a technical level.
My "best war film ever" is Das Boot. Obviously I haven't seen all war films, but that would be my pick so far.
To each their own, of course :)
Tricky one, best War movie, not a huge fan of that genre, maybe 'Apocalypse Now ', 'Cross of Iron', agree ''Das Boot' is a serious contender!
Haven't watched Das Boot yet. Has anyone watched the 5-hour version ?
Best war film...i'd go with Paths of Glory and Platoon
It's the version I always go back to actually. Usually have to spread it out over two evenings, but it's well worth the effort. Highly recommended :)
Has been on my watchlist forever. Will have to check it out soon. Thanks for reminding me :)
Great suggestions as well! 👍
PoG is another one I still need to watch. Given it's Kubrick, I expect to be impressed.
Another one I really want to check out is: Tora! Tora! Tora!
A superb WWI film that I also highly appreciated is the recent Im Westen nichts Neues (aka All Quiet on the Western Front. I actually think it can stand next to the rest that have been mentioned so far. I was really impressed by it.
It’s one of Kubrick’s finest, a daring film in every sense. In the 1950s, we were still busy celebrating our war heroes, and Paths of Glory does that too, but with a difference. It exposes an enemy within our own ranks. The de facto enemy is conspicuously absent from this war picture: there are no faceless German soldiers, no confrontations with the Kaiser’s generals. Instead, the villains wear our own uniforms. They are the officers in the ivory tower.
It’s hard not to draw unsettling parallels to other wars, social struggles, and the repressive mechanisms of modern society. The final scenes are deeply moving, a stark reminder of the tragedy that every war carries, insolently repackaged by propagandists as “victory.”
Really enjoyed revisiting the first one - Identity. Its surprising how "lo-fi" the whole thing feels (it doesnt feature a huge amount of tech) and I liked Marie as a character.
Supremacy to me just didnt seem as good. I still enjoyed it, but I felt the story was more contrived and I wasnt totally on board with the shaky-cam style of directing, but the end car chase was pretty awesome.
On to Ultimatum next, which I have very fond memories of.
Ultimatum is my favourite of the bunch.
Controversial opinion: I'm also rather fond of Legacy. It's different, but Renner does a pretty good job. The film is cold and quiet, but an effective thriller if you ask me.
