Matthew Vaughn should be in directors' jail for a while. It's his worst movie, even worse than Kingsman 2.
It's like Bulltet Train but even more boring and dull.
That was the worst film of last year for me. Genuinely awful from start to finish, didn't have a single noteworthy element to praise or enjoy.
Never seen this before, but remember it was talked about when it came out and I was still a wee lad. Given my other half's soft spot for shark movies, this one was bound to be watched at some point. Cheapo for sure, but hardly a bad effort imo.
Edit: I read about the real life events that inspired this film, one of the most frightening things I have ever read, I must say.
Before Scott Adkins, before Jason Statham, there was Gary Daniels flying the flag for blightly, as our home grown action star/martial artist.
The opening 20 minutes of Recoil is a ridiculously awesome escalation (to be fair, the rest of the film is punctuated by action set-pieces. But that opening 20 minutes really needs to be seen). What begins as a violent bank robbery, becomes a shootout on the street outside the bank, then cumulating with a car/bike chase. This is the sort of old skool action film, that can put any modern action film to shame. And it's all done in less than 100 minutes!
Found the DVD for a couple of quid in a charity shop recently.
Have fond memories watching this as a kid when it was on TV.
It's still great! Anthony Hopkins as Phillip Calvert, a British Treasury agent investigating the hijacking of cargo ships in the Irish sea. No apparent licence to kill but does a lot of it!
The film has some wonderfully harsh locations in the West Coast of Scotland and some impressive action. The Helicopter crash is pretty spectacular and some of the action is brutal. Calvert kills several baddies in cold blood!
Great entertainment, meant to be a series of films to rival 007, but poor performance at the box office put paid to that! Shame, as Hopkins is excellent as the loose cannon Calvert, and looks cool in his Naval uniform!
Great fun, I was thinking recently of upgrading my old dvd! Special mention must go to the great Robert Morley as his M like boss (bemoaning the lack of decent biscuits to go with his tea) and Angela Morley, aka Walter Stott who composed the wonderful theme music!
Yes mate, Roger Morley is great in it. Especially when Calvert gets him in on the action!
The theme music is indeed super cool! Had no idea Walter Stott lived as a female after 1972...same with composer Walter Carlos who later became Wendy Carlos (A Clockwork Orange and Tron)
C'mon Arrow, get a remastered Bluray version out!
Honestly its ok but not the best of the 80’s movies as many claim.. its kind of annoying but meh mostly harmless…. Trying to get over the whole fish out of water thing but as a historian the inaccuracy are very annoying .

One thing I hadn't really paid attention to before though, was that the villains' backstory is never quite explained. We know Brian Cox and the Russian Oligarch are on in it together and stole $20m from the CIA which somehow made them loads of cash and depended upon the murder of Neski, the Russian politician, but it's all quite murky as to how. And then I watched the deleted scenes, and was surprised to see there's a deleted scene where Pamela Landy explains the whole thing: Neski wanted to sell off the Caspian Sea oil contracts to lots of different, reputable people- but when he was killed this plan was prevented, and the evil oligarch bought them all up with the $20m and made loads of unscrupulous cash.
Quite why this scene was deleted I'd like to know as it seems pretty essential! Probably a pacing thing, always seems to come down to that.
There's also an alternative ending which I'm really glad they ditched: the one they used was much punchier.
And it really kind of is quite shocking how much Quantum of Solace rips off its ending!
I saw this movie when it came out at a drive in as a kid, and I remember thinking it was very cool. Have not seen it since, but yesterday I ordered a Blu ray of it just because of your post. Thanks.

Skyfall 4K never been a fan of this movie though was able to ignore the incompetence on this watch. Through my new cinema system this film looks astonishing in 4K. There are some genuinely good scenes, SF is far superior to SP and NTTD IMO.
But SP was more genuine fun. IMHO, of course.
The Hinx scenes are good car chase and train fight, I find Madeline too low energy and anything her character is involved in I struggle with, If Madeline had a spark it would have got more from Bond as a character.
I watched OP a few days ago the chemistry between Bond and Octopussy was electric and added so much to the film, I thought at the time this is one of Sir Rogers best performances,
Witness for the Prosecution 1957 superbly directed and acted, one of my favorite Agatha Christie adaptions.

Another film about conformity that I would definitely recommend, said to be one of the greatest films ever (which I would agree with), is this one:
I remember having Ali Bombay and his watergoing motorcycle toy , the Shark vehicle was obviously inspired by a certain underwater Lotus
Vicious salmon-based humanoid creatures (I never thought that I would ever type those words) emerge from the water and attack a seaside town. The film tries to provide a scientific explanation of how the humble salmon, could turn into violent, humanoids. But's as loopy as the rest of the film is. It's a cheesy sleaze-fest.
A cheesy sleaze-fest for sure, but I seem to remember enjoying it :p
Oh the practical effects are very good. Lots of throat ripping and slashing. Very squishy. :))
Humanoids From The Deep is a bonafide genre classic, one of the better "so bad it's actually good" Corman excursions. I also love the score. Such a delicious time capsule experience...
It definitely further solidified Sam Mendes as a great film director for me! And thanks for that recommendation, looks like something I would be interested in!
