Is fun Bond like GoldenEye or like all the way camp of DAF or TSWLM / MR?
Surprised to read the news of the director. 😉 Things are moving forward! James Bond will return.
I agree 100 percent with Seve. I rate Blade Runner 2 (2049) as one of the worst sequels ever made. Dull, tedious. Ironically, I thought the first teaser trailer was wonderful. A masterclass in how to present a teaser trailer:
I didn't think the film caught any of that vibe.
I thought Amazon would have gone with Christopher Nolan. Seemed the obvious choice but maybe Nolan would want final cut privilege (complete control over the final edit of the film) and Amazon MGM Studios don't allow that?
I can't think of an obvious actor to play 007 but I guess Denis Villeneuve will have a few chaps in mind and maybe he can influence Amazon/Pascal/Haymen.
My guess is Amazon will want to continue making Bond films in the Eon Barbara Broccoli/Craig era style. Based on his resume Villeneuve doesn't seem the type of film maker that would make a Connery or Moore type Bond film. I could be completely wrong of course, but I can't see Bond 26/1 being a more light hearted romp!
However, maybe 007 First Light is a clue how Amazon regard Bond so you never know. I've no idea if First Light will be good but a film adaptation of the game (albeit with a different plot), Bond as a young 00, Villeneuve directing, could be one way to reinvent the franchise.
I belive it's a "Lawrence of Arabia" joke
Interesting question, I guess it's a matter of individual taste, personally I think
Connery's movies set the bar / created the template for the right balance of seriousness and fun, with the possible exception of FRWL, which is perhaps a bit more serious, and DAF which is too silly
All Moore Bond movies are intended to be fun, but some take it too far
Dalton's TLD is meant to be fun, while LTK is intended to be more serious, but probably wasn't as serious as he would have liked.
All Brosnan Bond movies are intended to be fun, with the possible exception of TWINE
All Craig movies are intended to be serious and melodramatic, with "fun" coming in a distant third
What most fans wanted was a course correct back to a middle-ground approach, with a balance between a strong contemporary story, dynamic action and a slightly more irreverent touch. Hiring Villeneuve signals a desire to carry on in the Craig mold.
Yeah I think that's very possible. He's said he was a fan of the early movies so there must be a reason for that (personally I liked that Mendes seemed a fan of the Roger movies!)
Oh, no. I meant David Lynch directed the old Dune...not David Lean.
I can imagine him making something like From Russia With Love.
So, we've got fabulous new producers, one of the best directors ever, the promise of they continuing our beloved films, and we what? Complain? What a sad bunch.
Denis Villeneuve is an incredible filmmaker. Knowledgeable and respectful, who works with only the best people in the business.
So, we get the producer of Harry Potter, the director of Arrival, Sicario, Dune, 2049, ... And we get to complain? Cmon people, grow up.
If it were Nolan, we would complain about the lack of sexiness, if it were Cuaron, we'd complain about his lack of consistence, if it is Villeneuve, we'll complain about the pace, ... Cmon...
These are all brilliant filmmakers. This shows Amazon is willing to make all the right choices.
BE HAPPY, damn it.
I, for one, am. Very, very happy. The director I've been championing for years has been chosen. Quality will be very much a given. So, so happy. What a lovely day to be a Bond fan.
In this world we're in, there are fewer chances of happiness. So, this is great news. Be happy, Bond fans.
Now...for Bond himself.
Well said
For years we hated the ramping in DUD, the editing in QOS, too much action in TND,... And now we have a director who appreciates slow moments on screen, as any great cineast would.
Besides, he talked about respecting tradition. Of this being a huge responsibility.
The man is already saying all the right things.
So, again, be happy.
I don't think it's slow pace that is quite the issue, but morose, slow scenes. Basically more of Bond staring forlornly at burnt photographs like we got in SP. Dune has a lot of character sitting or laying down just sort of staring off.
I agree. So we don't get another lackluster over-the-knee score like the one he did, yes, I agree, he needs time to do something special. Although, I don't know if I wouldn't prefer another sound, something different. It's like with the cast, I'd rather have no returning member. Clean slate, for everything, that'd be my general choice. But hey, I wouldn't be adverse to Zimmer returning. And I hope they'll choose someone punchier for the theme song, something strong and catchy, and upbeat in a sense.
Yeah. I wanted Ludwig Göransson. But it's Villeneuve, so it means it's Zimmer as well. Plus, Amazon being careful with James Bond, would want Zimmer too...since he already familiar with Bond. Yeah, I would also like an upbeat Bond title theme.
One thing I am glad about is that we have a director who understands and loves the cinema experience.
No disrespect to Paul King or Jonathan Nolan, but had someone like that been announced I'd have been nervous that Amazon Bond doesn't have the same pull as EON's Bond.
Well said. This is cinema territory, not tv, not streaming. We're in safe hands, indeed.
Yes, that's a positive about Villeneuve which even I'd acknowledge.
The one thing you can say about NTTD is that it felt like a big, cinematic experience. In fact I think you could say that about Craig's last three in general - the filmmaking felt like it'd been stepped up, and there was a greater weight to the tone. I certainly got that sense in a way I hadn't quite with even CR and QOS.
And honestly, each new Bond film should have that feel, regardless of the specifics of story. It's a cinematic experience, the ultimate blockbuster - stylish, but smart, humorous, tense, and fun. They should have a sense of spectacle, not merely just in a few cool practical stunts, but how the whole thing is packaged, how the story is told etc.
I understand for a minority of fans they want Bond 26 to be some sort of course correction from the Craig era (personally I've always said it won't be - a 'reinvention' Bond film, sure - but not a course correction as Craig's last films were too successful, varied in tone, and are what many fans associate with Bond today). It's worth saying we'll get a new take on Bond whatever way and this will be its own thing, but in this very general regard of making Bond cinematic, I don't think that's going to change, and that's one thing I think can be said about Villeneuve being given the director's chair.
Not even a day into the announcement that Denis Villeneuve will direct Bond 26, and a select few already have their crystal balls out.
No other news, no casting or story, but based solely on Viileneuve’s previous work, how his Bond film turns out has already been judged.
It has been decided based purely on a guess. We’re all entitled to an opinion, but as with the casting of Daniel Craig, at least give the guy a chance before you write him off.
"Fun Bond" is whatever one considers light in comparison to whatever they consider too serious. But sometimes it means high spectacle, big on action. Sometimes it means it has a lot of beautiful Bond beds. It's meant to be vague, as it is use to express dissatisfaction towards whatever Bond film you're comparing it to.
A brilliant post, as always, my friend. And yeah, some of us have been rooting for DV for years. I know I have. Stellar producers, stellar director, now the only thing we need is...
Ahah, true. Fun is only fun for some. And even then, everyone has their own sense of fun.
Try watching the Dune movies with your brain switched on next time.
Sarah Gadon who i seen in Enemy (and have a couple of other movies with like Dreamhouse with Daniel Craig and moost present Ferrari) i like to see as Bondgirl, so hope she will be in it. Back then i sugest her playing a blind Bondgirl.
With him big possible Roger Deakins (Skyfall, Prisoners, Blade Runner 2049) wil return that something i hope won't happen. I prefer a film Cinematographer. Or there will go for Bradford Young a dop who worked on Arrival and Pawn Sacrifice. Some of what he working on feels Skyfall, Spectre and QOS.
Tanya Lapointe worked with him on those Dune movies, but she made documentry where man and woman look there own perspective of man and woman. And a creatieve documentry about man who making creatieve things with paper.
Denis Villeneuve was already be in talks with the old producers and it be difficult then already to see what directer he wil be. Overall idea was even slower directer then Sam Mendes, if lucky more refreshing as Marc Forster but atleast a better choose then Kathryn Bigelow. But we have now David Heyman (Warner Producer), Amy Pascal (Sony producer) and Denis as directer feels as choose of Warner (Dune, Harry Potter) and Sony (Incendies, Arrival, CR, QOS, SF, SP). I think Bond 26 wil be made/released before Dune 3.
Warner is very openminded studio but also on the budget. After the end of NTTD everything is possible. Minimal i hope there go for something new (what also can mean that there can take look to John Gadner novels with 2-3 include elements that are closer/simalar Daniel Craig hidden themes) then remake the novels.
Now it is waiting till Jake Gyllenhaal or Timothée Chalamet wil be anouched as Bond :))
I think there are many people who expect the return of the Brosnan era and they already know that is not going to happen.
Right? ;)
