007 First Light - IO Interactive - The New James Bond Video Game

  • Will need to let this depiction of Bond grow on me, I agree he seems a bit too amused and scrappy (though there are a few shots in there where he looks a bit more laconic & cold blooded) and the loose cannon characterization is not exactly what I was hoping for, but this looks like it could be great otherwise. Very vibrant and lively with stellar scenery and very Bondian setpieces, and the little snippets of gameplay combined with the info on the website have me hopeful it will be fun to play.

I wonder if we’ll get to wander around MI6 or Q’s lab in between missions and mess around with the gadgets. It’s fun that we’ve got brand new depictions of all these characters to look forward to.

I wonder what First Light refers to - the villain’s evil plan perhaps.

Apparently, there were some leaks beforehand and those said
the "villain" would be the head of an AI company. It doesn't look like that in the trailer. It seems to be a rogue 00. But on the other hand, the marketing material indicates that the 00 section is being revived here, so maybe 009 has been out of MI6 for a long time and has gone into tech? Anyway. It's probably just that some marketing commitee sat together and wanted something with 'First' in the title and there will be some shoehorned reason for it.

I thought the trailer looks incredible. Some calls back and Omega product placement, which feels familiar but it looks like it focused on a good story to tell with a younger Bond, which with any luck with land with the younger generation.

One of the features I hope they implemented is the ability to wear different suits and dinner jackets from some of the films. I liked how Cypher 007 allowed you to unlock some uniforms like the safari outfit from TMWTGG or white dinner jacket from SPECTRE. I’d love for the new game to offer a feature like that - I signed up for the IO website so that I can receive the LALD turtleneck and golden PPK as bonuses - fingers crossed for more folks!

One area I was disappointed in was the animation of the characters’ faces. Compared to Horizon: Forbidden West it’s stiff and unconvincing. Not a dealbreaker for me, but I thought we had moved past the Thunderbird’s style animation. If you hire talent like Lennie James you shouldn’t hamstring the performance with wooden faces.

I've seen comments on Instagram about the trailer saying that Bond looks like Jr., that the graphics look like they're from Playstation 3 and XBOX 360, and also that, oh surprise, they made him woke.
And I say, the trailer just came out, no kidding!

Yeah, this is something that we here don’t focus on as much, because this is a Bond forum and not a gaming one, but this doesn’t look technically super impressive. Now, games do develop further as they get closer to gold status and for various reasons this could all be old material. Plus, as mentioned, this game will sell through IP, story and gameplay. It doesn’t have to be the vanguard of graphics. But it might sink a bit if it just can’t keep up with the other blockbuster games slated for 2026.

I just don’t really care about all of those people and what they think. I’ve waited too long to get my hands on a new Bond game - if a bunch of losers on the internet want to wine and complain then let them - they probably get little enjoyment out of their lives. Meanwhile I’ll be picking this up on release day.

Yes I must admit, I've been playing the Indy game and First Light isn't looking as impressive so far graphics-wise, but it's not finished.

Must admit, if Bond is looking woke in this trailer then I'm even more puzzled as to what woke means.

I presume, as per usual, it just means 'I saw a black person!'.

You’ll always get that kind of criticism. I actually remember writing on here about two years ago that I believed push back towards the next actor would be around that minority finding him either too young or not masculine enough for Bond. And that while it was most likely Bond would be white, the cast around him would be more diverse and that’d get push back from a few no matter what. I guess in a way it kinda happened but obviously in a different medium!

I think people seem generally excited for this on the whole. And in the grand scheme of things this level of minor, anti-woke flailing is annoying enough to make those excited for this want to see it do well. My suspicion is this game will generally be positively received (maybe not a GE video game situation where low expectations helped make it an instant hit, although I must admit that game is too before my time with Bond to mean anything to me personally and I have little to no concept of it. Perhaps it won’t even reach the heights to the extent many of us believe it’ll attain, but I can definitely see it being similar to NF, AUF and EoN: for many it’ll be their first introduction to Bond, or certainly their reintroduction to the video game side to the franchise, and it’ll have that going for it. Those games are remembered really fondly and they’re great!)

I bet the story mode is super quick to complete. Looks similar to uncharted, which was immersive and enjoyable.

Can we have a PS5 raffle?

You were most definitely right haha - it’s just Internet culture now and I’m becoming increasingly convinced that some of those people just need to step outside and touch grass. Its like that classic saying - “The best thing about the Internet is that everyone can voice their opinion - the worst thing about the Internet is that everyone can voice their opinion.”

I’m just really digging the concept of a younger Bond in his mid twenties. I know it was a concept that Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson weren’t too keen on but I think it’s a perfect idea for video games. Keep Bond the established agent in the films while the games can explore the earlier parts of his career. If First Light is successful enough (and I really hope it exceeds all expectations) - we’ll more than likely have a trilogy of Bond games on our hands and by the time we get to the final game we can have a more mature/seasoned 007 akin to the films and that would bring things full circle.

Best case scenario is that we have another “Batman - Arkham” situation where the games are so popular that they become one of the most beloved interpretations of Bond for years to come.

Him being amused and scrappy makes sense to me here, as Bond is a young man. It would be strange if he was brooding and sullen.

Oh yeah, those Bond games were great and I have wonderful memories of them! They certainly mean more to me than GE ‘97 ever will, and I have no doubt this game will be the same for others, no matter if it exceeds expectations or not.

And I agree, this could compliment the films, especially if Bond is slightly more established in them. So yes, no need to worry about the haters in this instance!

I do think - in an unfortunate way from the perspective of the earlier games - First Light has barely a slight incline to surmount to be the greatest Bond game.

Its most recent competition is from two entire console generations ago, where most of the games are...fine?...and the final game in particular is an absolute pile of shit. GoldenEye 64 is fun as hell to play still, iconic, addictive, even just watching speedruns gets the blood pumping...but that game will soon be 30 years old. It's a product of its time from any meaningful technical perspective.

Oh yeah - the EA era of Bond games is still the best imo. I’ve played GE64 so many times now (despite it being a game I wasn’t around to experience the heights of) and yeah it’s still fun but AUF, NF, EON, and FRWL all offer a variety of gameplay and set pieces to where it doesn’t feel like I’m just mowing down generic guards level after level. The games actively encourage using stealth and thinking the way Bond would think - as opposed to trying to rush into a room all guns blazing. Blood Stone is great too - it’s definitely the best Bond game of Activision’s time with the IP imo.

While the environments looked really good in Indiana Jones, I thought the facial animation was pretty stiff. I think First Light looks a bit better in that regard. I think the big Sony exclusive games or Rockstar games have spoiled us for quality of animations and graphics. Really takes a monumental amount of money, time, and manpower to achieve fidelity like that so I’m not surprised 007 is not up to those standards. Looks good enough to me though and if it plays smoothly I’ll be satisfied.

Oh I think the facial animation is really good in Indy. I was surprised how much I could read the expressions. Bear in mind Harrison Ford doesn't really move his face much(!) but the other characters are expressive.

Sure, facial animation is not the be-all and end-all - Elden Ring is an amazing game, but the facial animations weren’t great, imo, and Hades didn’t animate its characters at all when the gods spoke to the player, it just used a (beautifully drawn) static image, and that didn’t stop it from being an incredibly addictive game. Good animation cut-scenes make for good trailers, but gameplay ultimately decides if a game has legs or not. I’ve heard the Hitman games are great, but I haven’t played one.

Ha I love that. Craig’s Bond would be irked if he saw the new Bond casually walking through crowds while touching his ear.

Definitely recommend the newest trilogy of Hitman games (which can be bought in a big bundle so all the content is playable in one game). Not only are they great games in their own right, but there’s a ton of Bond DNA in them. It will make immediate sense why they were picked to develop this game.

For those concerned about the graphics - there could still be changes by the time the game is released. Look no further than the initial trailer for Red Dead Redemption II compared to the finished product. As of right now, it just looks like the Hitman aesthetic. I'm totally fine with that.

Bond dressed in disguise at the hotel is pure Hitman. I'll be eager to see the gameplay footage. Best of both worlds it seems.

While it's true the graphics are not that great, I think in the videogame industry nowadays we give too much importance to graphics.
