Happy May the 4th Day to everyone. Apparently, @Fire_and_Ice_Returns J.J. Abrams really pushed for the original releases when he was working on the sequel trilogy. As of now, Kathy Kennedy says no. But it isn't her fault, George Lucas probably had a clause with his selling to Disney contract. Hopefully, this will start a course correction.

Also, it seems like more post-Sequel Trilogy media is on the way.

Here's to hoping that some great Star Wars content is coming our way!

Does anyone apart from George Lucas actually like the 'A New Hope' Special Edition..?'

I don't "hate" that one. Some other tweaks are worse, like what was done to ROTJ with Hayden and nooooooooooo!

I must admit, i have never seen that version of ROTJ nor do i intend to. It sounds terrible.

But i'm not a fan of the original film anyway.

Well, if any of you guys are interested, a group of fans under the name of Team Negative 1 has made restorations of the OT using the original 35mm film scans remastered in 4K.
You can find them as 4K77/4K80/4K83.

Gary Kurtz seems to get a lot of fan's frustrations with ROTJ and the Special Editions. He's right about the attack on a second Death Star. However, I'm still happy got Slave Leia out of ROTJ.

    What’s wrong with ROTJ?

It’s not as good as TESB, but I’d argue it’s on par with ANH.

When Goldfinger was released, was this the first time movie merchandising really took off big time ?

I’d say it was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) was one of the first movies to have merchandise released along with the movie.

Yeah probably the disney cartoons but not at the level of Bond and later Star Wars.

George (or he was advised by someone)probably saw the Bond merchandising and later when Jaws came out there were things like Jaws t-shirts that were selling like pizza's 🍕

Shocked there is no discussion of Andor here. Anybody watching? I stopped after Ep. 4 Season 2 but will pick it back up this month. Admittedly a few slow episodes to start.

I've only done the first three, can't wait to see Mon Mothma being furtive at yet more parties for ten more episodes.

I watched the first 2 episodes of season 2 and the start of the 3rd Ep and switched it off forever.

Yes a very slow start......... Unlikeable characters, boring script.

They should have made a Luke Skywalker- Mark Hamill series which i'm sure most SW fans would love ?

I have checked out when it comes to Disney content though several people who's opinions I trust say that midway through Andor Season 2 we get some of the greatest Star Wars ever made... So I am going to have to watch it.

Not in the first five episodes, not in my opinion. Sixth wasn't promising. 7, 8 and 9 I hear are better.

I have heard the earlier episodes are a bit of a slog in season 2. I watched season one which was good though also quite boring at times.

One mystery that has plagued me for years, when C3PO arrives at Luke Uncles house why does he not recognise him as the droid he used to own?

One of the big continuity flaws. Ditto for Obi-Wan, who can't seem to remember these droids. Either these men are forgetting things because of old age, or they choose not to recognise 3PO for some reason.

It was ATOC wasn’t it? Or at least 3PO was working on the farm. I always hated that story decision - it makes the universe feel smaller than it is.

Both 3PO and R2 really feel poorly tacked on in the prequels in the worst way. In the OT they felt like fully integrated characters that actually interacted with the cast and had actual rapport. In the prequels they’re often isolated from the rest of the cast, primarily only interacting with each other when we cut to them. It was one of the things that made the prequels feel inferior compared to the OT. Which is bizarre given that Lucas decided to have 3PO be INVENTED by Anakin, but the movies never really do anything with it. Why introduce that conceit at all? If you had to include them in the prequels, it would have made more sense to just have them already together as servants in Naboo.

As for Old Ben not remembering the droids. In the original film R2 claims to have been the property of Obi-Wan but of course Old Ben doesn’t actually remember that. I think the prequels do run with the conceit that Obi-Wan doesn't really give much thought about droids. He sees them as mere tools. It’s flimsy, but I could roll with it.

However, it IS weird that Uncle Owen also would have previously owned 3PO and not remember.

Sometimes it feels like they made the prequels a decade too early considering how much CGI was involved. Since Obi Wan is the main character, Ewan Mcgregors age would've matched up better with Alec Guiness, another thing which bugs me.

If Lucas waited a decade later than he did I’m not sure the CGI would have been significantly better. The reason film tech is where it is today is because the prequels pioneered so much of the tech. For example, let’s say Lucas never made the prequels. That means Lucas wasn’t pushing for digital cameras, and thus the tech wouldn’t be where it is today which is SIGNIFICANTLY way better than what digital cameras were capable of in 2000s. SKYFALL probably would have been shot on film thus look very different from what we actually got. Probably would still look great by Deakins, but it would definitely not look like what he made with the digital cameras used in 2012.

The timing involved is a major problem. There's only nineteen years between 3 and 4, but nineteen years ago is what, Tony Blair? In 4, nobody seems to remember anything, with the Clone Wars alluded to once and the entire galaxy ran by the empire.

It feels as though it's been in situ for about fifty not nineteen years

To defend GL, C-3PO had his mind wiped, and Uncle Owen died only a day later. He might not have had time to think about it. Also, there seem to be a lot of droids like 3PO's style. Plus, 3PO had a color change since Owen saw him last.

To be fair that’s not really a mistake on the prequels, that’s all on the original film having set that up with Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan laying out the events. The rise of the Empire and the hunting of the Jedi by Vader were supposed to occur within Luke’s own lifetime. So 19 years really is about as far as you could try to stretch it, and Lucas went as far as to have Luke born just after Anakin’s fall.
