The Predator. Oh dear, oh dear,oh dear. Hopefully this will lay this particular franchise to rest once and for all. How can Shane Black direct such great films when working on a lowish budget, but give him a studio film and he screws it up. This and Iron Man 3 are both awful.

At least Iron Man 3 has some redeeming qualities. The Predator was just non stop garbage.

Not really. Annoying kid, a plot twist that Marvel is trying to make up for, slow pacing in the middle, bad jokes. It’s Marvel Studios at its worst.

Iron Man 3 was fun. The Predator was tedious. Neither were great, but fun trum- omg, we will really never get to use that as a word ever again, will we? WINS OUT over tedious.

This is the one I've had my sights on for a while.

But on top of that is Tony's lingering PTSD, his need to solve some problems without a suit for a little while, the Air Force One rescue, the attack on Tony's home and then later on the final fight at the tanker. Also, I used to hate it, but the twist has grown on me.

Two of Barry Levinson’s Baltimore Tetralogy, Avalon (1990) and Liberty Heights (1999). The other two films are Diner (1982), which I have seen, and Tin Men (1987) which I haven’t. Avalon in particular was fantastic.

@j_w_pepper. I watched Yellow Submarine several weeks ago. Outside of Disney, I can’t think of a major animated film from this era that was so critically acclaimed (but I could be wrong). In fact, the art design by Heinz Edelmann was so representative of the pop-art of the late 1960s that people often attribute it to (the significantly more famous) Peter Max. The roto-scoping technique used to animate the “Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds” segment is just one highlight among many for me.

While it may have been interesting so see the final product, I’m glad that the proposed Robert Zemeckis re-make never made it pass the exploratory stage. Some test footage of the proposed remake recently appeared on line and I didn’t really like it. It looked like a 2000's ripoff of the 1960s. Yellow Submarine is perfect as is – a perfect artifact of 1968. (*)

In the two plus years that I’ve been a member here, I’ve noticed a significant overlap in musical and film interests among the members. And while there is diverse opinion about the specifics of a given issue among the members, we tend to be on a similar wave length.

Alita: Battle Angel 4K I bought this a while ago only just got round to watching it. As a fan and collector of Manga films back in late 80's and 90's I think this film was amazing, very impressive.

Excellent choice, @Fire_and_Ice_Returns. I thought this film did the first part of the manga very well. This is the first manga adaptation that gives me some hope--I say some home--that they may be able to do an AKIRA adaptation well.

Interesting film history with a very very charming lady. Not a favorite sub-genre off mine but I've seen a couple or more. One anecdote combines the Video Nasty effort to a new role on the police force. Especially nice to see events play out across the years in a positive way. On Midnight Pulp and Tubi.

I hope we get the continuation now that Disney has 20th Century Fox. Alita was such a well developed character the film does have flaws though Alita makes it worthwhile. the action is superb.

I still have my Akira Boxset on DVD, I heard a film adaption was in development some time ago and then the pandemic happened.

I was lucky enough to see Black Widow early and I thought it was great. Ended up #12 in my MCU ranking, which, considering how fond I am of that franchise (we now have as many MCU films as we do Bond films, and I'd argue the former has the better batting average by a small bit), is a very, VERY good showing.

I have absolutely no idea why anyone would want to re-adapt Akira and I CERTAINLY don't see the point of doing it in live-action.

I gave up on the superhero genre a while ago - I think the last one I saw was Civil War or whichever one had a fight at the airport - but I might have to check this one out. I'll probably be lost as to what's going on but for years, while I was a fan of these films, I kept wondering why they hadn't gotten around to a standalone film for her character. I saw a trailer for it a long while back, the action seemed pretty good and the cast was great.

The '88 anime tells about 50% of the entire story. And I think that, seeing what films can show these days, a live-action Akira may be an awesome spectacle to enjoy. Either way, the "problem" is that it is going to happen sooner or later. I want to see it done well. 😉

Billion Dollar Brain - the third and final installement in the original Harry Palmer trilogy.
    What... a... dud !
It's a bloody mess, and hardly a glorious one. It is to The Ipcress File what You Only Live Twice (released the same year) is to From Russia With Love, except the latter is still unmistakably a Bond movie whereas Brain is devoid of all the things that have made Palmer such a unique character and the first movie such an enduring classic of the spy genre.
Next on the agenda is Funeral In Berlin which I expect to enjoy far more than this disaster.

A double-bill today : The Satanic Rites of Dracula and The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires. Both interesting movies, although not the best in the series. Still, fun.

Love both of those latter Hammer flicks. Lately I've become quite partial to GOLDEN VAMPIRES....probably because of Julie Ege.

I love The Satanic Rites of Dracula!

Yesterday watched Nosferatu a Venezia, notorious for Klaus Kinski terrorising everyone on set to such an extend, they just stopped filming all together.

Anyway, the plot is non-existant but the film has a moody atmosphere like only Italians can create.

Also featuring Christopher Plummer, Donald Pleasence and Barbara De Rossi.

Must be exciting enough if the nudity-free trailer still contains nudity.

I wrote a bit about this one the other day. Your last sentence is a good summation of the film. I do think the atmosphere is so good that the film warrants a watch on that basis alone.

    @Creasy47, very much so :))

@mattjoes Sorry, I must have missed your comment, but you're right, I had a great time with it despite the lack of a decent story. Though, like so many Italian horror films, it's that lack of logical story-telling in combination with the dreamlike visuals that often give these films a nightmarish quality.

In preparation for Godzilla Vs. Kong, today, I watched Godzilla : King of the Monsters. And it's still as good as it was when I saw it in the theater. Next DVD viewing : Godzilla Vs. Kong, of course. Next movie viewing : Black Widow. Although I don't know yet when I'm going to see both.

Today, I went back to the cinema (after almost a year-long dry spell, to see Black Widow, and I enjoyed it very much.Excellent casting (Florence Pugh shines, but so does Rachel Weisz), good action scenes, and even a tribute to James Bond (with a nice Chekov's Gun near the end). and (Spoiler Alert) :
You will have trouble recognizing Olga Kurylenko.

I like Sinbad, and this was pretty funny, especially the scene with the monkey and the peanut butter in the evil lawyer's pants.

Tonight: PAPER MOON (Peter Bogdanovich, 1973). Not for the first time, but at least for the first time since switching to Blu-Ray, i.e. at least for the past eleven years or so. A brilliant movie in every regard, with a ten-year old (or so) Tatum O'Neal deservedly winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress when she should have won Best Actress instead, Great black-and-white cinematography by Laszlo Kovacs. Probably among my top-ten favourite movies eaver.

    Bad Boys For Life.

Boy did i enjoy this. Smith and Lawrence bounce off each other so well! Reminds me of Gibson and Glover's relationship from Lethal Weapon.

    Black Widow.

Great fun and i have to say....... Red Guardian stole the movie for me. Made me laugh so much. :-bd
