    The Phantom Menace leading up to the release of episode 9 I am doing a full watch through of the now coined Skywalker Saga films (repackaging by Disney blah blah blah). Episode 1 has issues well documented though to me it feels like Star Wars and Lucas is full of great idea's despite his inability to direct actors. When this film is good it is really good and the best moments are better than anything Disney has done so far IMO

    That I agree with. However, "anything Disney has done so far"? Nah, RO is in my top 3 of SW movies. ;-)

    That I agree with. However, "anything Disney has done so far"? Nah, RO is in my top 3 of SW movies. ;-)

    I was referring to the Saga films, RO is by far the best Disney SW film.

    Attack of the Clones Admittedly Padme and Anakin is hilarious comedy which is a positive. As a fan of Ray Harryhausen and old school fantasy films I can see what George was doing with certain elements. This film is totally insane and there are moments of genius throughout this film perhaps not in execution all of the time though certainly in concept. Christopher Lee is brilliant in his none reaction to whats going on around him intentional or otherwise... and comes across as a threat

    Finally got to see it. Not a frequent visitor to cinema anymore, has to be something really special to make me bother. A lot of hype around this, and it's mostly a talking point as THE movie to see.
    Verdict? I enjoyed it for what it is. But I have no desire to watch it again. What I found more interesting, my sister-in-law went to see it (loved it) and told me a number of people walked out of her screening. I thought maybe it was too disturbing for some! At my viewing, I counted 8 people walking out. I now believe that some were expecting a comic book, Heath Ledger/Jack Nicholson type Joker movie.....And this is anything but!
    A dark story of mental illness, Joaquin Phoenix is excellent in the lead role, but it's not for everyone!

    Going to see it a second time tonight. I’m personally a big fan. It’s my cup of tea, but I understand it’s definitely not for everyone. It’s a very different “Batman” / comic-book movie.

    Joker (2019) again. At least as great the second time; amazing film all around.

    The Changeling (1980). Really liked this horror film! Not the most well-known one, but very good.

    Several brilliant sequences, but also a lot that preferably could have been cut out. It takes about half the movie to get invested. Quite blatant propaganda too, as is so often the case with Spielberg.

    I see your opinion on this propaganda... but the movie is a masterpiece.

    The Lighthouse (2019). I was seriously impressed with this film. Dafoe and Pattinson are amazing in this. One of the best horror movies not just this decade, but ever. If it weren’t for Joker it would be my favorite film of the year.

    @FoxRox Have you seen Parasite, the South Korean thriller that won the Palme D'Or at Cannes this year? I think it would join Joker and The Lighthouse as your favorite films this year.

    In the spirit of the season a double bill of

    Halloween (1978) and Halloween (2018)

    Obviously the original is a stone cold classic. Beautifully shot. Stylish and influential.

    The new follow up is growing on me and i adore the new Carpenter score. It doesn't all work but still a nice companion piece to the superior original.

    Also watched Halloween H20 (1997) which i think is a better sequel to the one above. It has a more logical storyline and keeps Michael's previous whereabouts a mystery. Jamie Lee has never been better.

    Another Halloween favourite is:

    The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) Much preferred to the original, this is Universal horror at it's finest. So many great and iconic moments and lashings of black humour.
    Love the prologue with Shelley and Byron.

    A newer horror i watched last night was In The Tall Grass (2019) based on the Stephen King/Joe King novella. Quite enjoyed its strange story. It's really well shot with convincing performances.

    I think I agree with that, @Thunderfinger. I usually love everything that Spielberg does, but he can be a bit much sometimes. RPO has visual gold to offer but there's a lot going on for just one movie.

    I thought RPO was way too bloated and nostalgia heavy for me to enjoy it. I didn't hate it or anything, but it left me questioning whether Spielberg's lost his touch.

    THE MATRIX MARATHON

    This is one of my darlings, the cultural phenomenon that left us baffled in '99. What can I say? This stuff isn't getting old! The action still rocks, the mythology remains cool despite some truly nonsensical concepts in the sequels and the exceptionally bad dialogues that come with them. But hey, because of the action, I'm a Matrix sequels apologist. Keanu, Fishburne, Weaving, Moss, ... they're all so much fun in these films. So, for this marathon:
    1. The Matrix: excellent, still, hasn't lost one bit of its charm.
    2. The Animatrix: easily overlooked by the anime challenged, but a huge recommend to all of us, children of the '90s.
    3. The Matrix Revolutions: despite the heavy reliance on the silliest of plot twists, there's nothing but eye candy in this one.
    4. The Matrix Reloaded: still a delight, but the film slows down at times and the heavy-handed chewing gum philosophy carries the stench of pretention more than the other three movies.

    I, for one, have always loved The Matrix and I'm modestly intrigued by the prospect of a fourth film, even though I know I probably shouldn't be. ;)
