Goldeneye - Brozzer's first and, arguably, his best. Really enjoyed watching this last night but the movie seemed to be over pretty quickly as it moves at some speed.

Nice! What did you like about it in particular?!

I think Brosnans movies will age a bit better with time.
TND is in my opinion one of the Best overall Action films in the whole franchise, together with Goldeneye. It really looks like they were pulverizing huge budgets back than, just look at the chase sequences.
At the same time it just flows so well from start to finish. Great locations (one of my favorites is Hamburg since it is my current hometown so i have a special fondness for TND)
TND, for me is very close to Goldeneye, almost on par.

Well, I'd put it like this: the first half of TND is classic Bond. There is precious little with which to find fault. And while the second half is a bit too "actiony" for my taste, the explosions and machine guns didn't bother me as much on this viewing as they had in the past.

And one of the best PTS of the series.

Yes, the PTS is very good. A pity Miccoli tapped Cheryl Crow to sing that poor song, though. The title song and credits are the only truly bad things about TND's first half, IMO.

Last night I watched Tomorrow Never Dies. All part of my Bondathon in the run up to Spectre. Yeah, it was ok, some decent action sequences, Jonathon Pryce really hams it up as Elliot Carver, which I think that takes away part of his menace really, Michelle Yeoh is great as the all action Wai Lin, giving us a different type of Bond girl, Stamper may have the look of henchman but I don't think he's overly intimidating and Teri Hatcher is stunning as the beautiful doomed Bond girl, Paris Carver. Ok, so Hatcher may not have the acting chops of some of the other Bond girls in the series but, for me, she is one of the most beautiful.

    Yeah, it was ok.

Octopussy - last sunday evening on Blu ray. Still one of my favorite Bond films. Got to love the 009 chase scene in the beginning. Very well filmed in my opinion.

Good performances from Louis Jordan ("Mr Bond is indeed a very rare breed, soon to be made extinct.") and Steven Berkoff ("The West is decadent and divided, it has no stomach to risk our atomic reprisals.").

Sir Roger is good in this one too. Actually features one of his (if not best) fight scenes - in the Octopussy palace.

Although I love the Roger-era humour, it's a little overdone in the jungle chase with the Tarzan-sound.

All in all, till this day, a nice and enjoyable film.

Last night I watched The World Is Not Enough. When I first saw this I actually thought it was a super Bond movie but as the years have gone on, it appears not so. I enjoyed the PTS, but from then on it's downhill I'm afraid. Denise Richards may be pretty to look at but, that's it; her acting at times was laughable. Bringing back Zukovsky? Should never have happened and his appearance in GE was much superior. John Cleese, while I love him, his scene was more Fawlty Towers than James Bond. The movie does have it's moments apart from the PTS; Bond's ruthless side is played well in the death of Elektra and the scene with Q "always have an escape plan" is, in my opinion, beautifully done.

There seems to be a pattern with Brosnan's Bond movies in that, with each one, the quality seems to dip. Next up, Die Another Day. Eek!

What words would you use to describe the shift in tone from Dr No/From Russia With Love to Goldfinger? The first two are similar in tone, and goldfinger seems a bit of a departure. I can't quite put my finger on it except to say 'lighter'. Any thoughts?

@Mendes4Lyfe It goes from Spy to SuperSpy - less realistic and more emphasis on humour and gadets. And already Connery was getting miffed at the tone the film was taking. He complained about a few things in the script, the main one being the crushing of the golf ball as being ridiculous.
I don't know if I could use one word - but lighter seems to suit best.

Thank you very much for your response, very helpful. I agree, Goldfinger can be ridiculous at times, like the army men falling down on cue or the women with the pointed, well you know...

CR. After the age of mediocracy that was the Brosnan era, we get a fairly faithful adaption (albeit updated) of the core CR story with a Flemingesque portrayal of Bond. Brilliant film.....and the best Bond film since the 60's.
  • TMWTGG. One of the lesser Bonds, but it has its moments. Faults? Same as DAF and LALD: The action scenes are slackly edited (or executed) at times. Not as lively as LALD but it has a better villain, more interesting locales, slicker set design.

Die Another Day - Watched this last night as part of my Bondathon in the run up to Spectre. What can I say that already hasn't been said? In my opinion, it's the weakest of the Brosnan era and my least favourite of the series as a whole. This was the 40th anniversary Bond movie and I think it failed to deliver. Sure, there are some nice nods to the history of the Bond movies and a couple that were a little corny (such as Q giving Bond his new watch and telling him that's his 20th - corny as hell). Brozzer, well, for me, this is easily his worst performance as Bond; kind of feels like he's trying to channel all other Bond actors into one. Halle Berry - bloody awful, a role that really didn't suit her and some of the lines she was given (".....thrust of it", "Yo Mamma!"), just don't fit a Bond movie. Toby Stephens hams it nicely at times and, while he's a good actor, I didn't enjoy his performance. Rosamund Pike was a plus point in the movie. John Cleese as Q? I guess after so many years of the wonderful Desmond Llewelyn, it was hard to watch him as Q. And Madonna - the less said about her the better.

I didn't like the scenes where the action suddenly went slow motion, quite annoying, the Aston "Vanish", just no and some of the CGI was just plain awful in my opinion.

DAD has very good intentions but good intentions do not make an enjoyable movie. It did have some good points that I enjoyed; the opening sequence in particular. I though Zoa was a worthy henchman and the flashback scenes when Bond put himself into cardiac arrest looked good and I wish we could have seen more of them.

Unfortunately, I can only see this going to the bottom of my ranking when I finish with it.

On Her Majesty Secret Service - Working through the movies sequence in anticipation of the big date next month. OHMSS is working up my list as I've watched it more times in the past 4 months than in the previous 10 years. Lazenby cuts a great physical figure as Bond. Rigg is tremendous - certainly the best actress to play alongside Bond. Still warming up to Kojak as Blofeld, particularly after the iconic presence of Pleasance before. Movie balances action and character development well - perhaps better than any other Bond movie, save Casino Royale. Sad, sad ending. How in the world does the fatal bullet go through the front of the windshield anyhow?

Moving on to watch Connery & Co. destroy the follow-up.

It hadn't occurred to me until now, but it is very effective how the first thing you see in colour of Craig's Bond is the blood coming down over the gun barrel. As much as I stand by my opinion that CR is the most overrated film in the series, that's one hell of a PTS and introduction to a new Bond. They missed a trick though, they should have kept Bonds face in shadow throughout the fight and his talk with driden. Like they used to with Blofeld/Bond. That would have made the GB even more effective.

Side note, Max Williams of Den of Geek does supreme Bond reviews and he recently got round to CR. If anyone doesn't understand the hate for CR, read that review specifically the end bit about Venice. I have never seen my own thoughts on this said so clearly by another.

Has Max Williams of Den of Geek ever read Fleming though? I doubt it. CR is actually underated in my opinion.....the best bond since 1969.

What does Fleming have to do with it? We're talking about the quality of the film, as was max. CR is overrated for many people, and this feeling is growing as Max's recent review shows.

Er. It means that it is close to Fleming's vision. On the other hand it has good characterisation, plotting, score cinematography, actors, some of the best stunts in the series, beautiful sets......The best bond since 69.

Die Another Day. Always so frustrating, considering I really do enjoy the first half, but it keeps falling off the wheels more and more.

Well, I broke down & purchased a copy of A View To A Kill which I haven't seen in a few decades, and maybe it was because I wasn't expecting much that my expectations were totally exceeded- I had a great time watching it! The Beach Boys cover was short in duration, and really, I had no other real problems with this film! Roger actually looked quite good through most of it, Walken was great, Patrick & Roger had excellent chemistry together, Barry did a fine score, and the story was very good. I had no problems with Stacey, other that that she was a bit bland at times.
Overall, I'd have to say I was remiss to have not seen it in so long, but better late than never. ;)

That's good to know, @chrisisall! Although my appreciation for AVTAK declined somewhat in my last Bondathon, it's always great to read people's growing fondness for the film.

It's funny because in my last Bondathon, TND shot up in my ranking from the bottom three to the middle of the pack.

While it's sometimes hard for me to sit down and watch one random Bond film without turning it into a Bondathon, I see each and every one at LEAST once a year.
  • FYEO. Followed by the documentary narrated by Patrick Macnee. One of my favourite Bond films. A solid performance by Moore. Probably his best in the role. Good performances throughout by all the cast. Great action. The whole bike chase on the snow and the suspense in the sequence when Moore is in the elevator with his skis is expertly handled. I even like Conti's score! A very good debut by Glen. I feel like Glen was trying for his OHMSS with this film. The beach sequence for some reason reminds me of the scene in OHMSS and of course the great action on the slopes. Could have done without the Margaret Thatcher sequence at the end. While fun I prefer when they just mention The Prime Minister and not have an actual Prime Minister depicted. Not my favourite Moore (that would be TSWLM )but for some reason FYEO gets better after every viewing.

Agreed. I've gone about a year or less without seeing them, but it was worth it because My Bondathon really help me see every film with a fresh new perspective.

I'm about to go on a two year hiatus, but only because I've watched them all over ten times each in the last few years. I almost never watch one on it's own. If I start, I'll watch them all in some order.

    Even Goldeneye?

GOLDENEYE isn't my lowest by any means. It usually lands in the middle somewhere. In fact, if not for the bad bad puns, grating soundtrack, the beach scene and the tank chase it would sit comfortably in my Top Ten.

    But...
    ....but....
    but...
    ....b...b....but...

the tank chase is THE high point of GoldenEye :(

...and the beach scene is soooooooo romantic.....-melting my heart- ;;)
