Interesting. I've never found LTK to have tremendous rewatch quality at all.

@Birdleson thing is, I feel sad puting SP and SF so low since I enjoy them both, the problem is rewatchability is quote low due to both film's peaking straight with the PTS, and quite bad pacing issues post-title sequence (way too long in MI6 before getting the mission in SF and the 3rd act of SP).

YOLT should be higher, if only for Barry's work, Adams' set and the locations. I'll try to see if I rectify that. The thing is the sequence from the ninja training school up to Bond entering the volcano just kills the pacing.

That seems about right. Great job, thanks.

And still some people think GF is generally hated here.

Yes, @w2bond , very good work. And it's greatly appreciated. I could direct that stuff for hours.

This strongly supports my argument on another thread that the closer the films are to Fleming's original works, the more that they are revered on here. 7 of the Top Ten and all five of the Top Five are the films that stay closest to the source material.

And the bottom 11 have little to nothing to do with Fleming at all.

You're calculations must be incorrect, Dr No is only 9th. ;)

The tiers are the range where a given film consistently ranks. Looking at this comparison I posted a while ago, you'll notice the tiers are quite consistent between Bond fan sites, and even the general community (under the "website" category).

    mZydr8G.png

Disclaimer 1: The "websites" category includes rankings from entertainment sites, random forums, and youtube videos so there will be Bond fans in that mix. But you can easily see that GF is the clear winner.

Disclaimer 2: CR, QOS, and SF are missing from some website rankings so I've projected the total sum from the average rank

I can't believe it. It seems FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE has supplanted GOLDFINGER as the fan favourite. Interesting list you have there, @w2bond.

I'm afraid it's lonely at the top. While it's an appreciated film, it rarely appears at the top. Mostly it's between 3-12

Hmm? Where? Goldfinger's still on top of the general rank "Websites"

What's interesting is that CR has overtaken FRWL as MI6 favourite since Spectre. Still need more data though

@w2bond - Appreciate the effort you've spent compiling this list. It was expected to see FRWL, GF, OHMSS and CR in the top five. Whatever rounded out that top five would be interesting to see, however. I'd have guessed it between DN, TB, TSWLM, TLD, GE, and SF. Looks like SF has prevailed, and TSWLM and GE belong to the next tier. Very close between those two, then it's TLD. Bit of a jump, and we get DN and TB - the top ten pretty much seems to be the ones I guessed.

I know rankings are subjective, but I really can't see LTK as 10/10. I mean, I appreciate the film it's trying to be, and if it had been that, it'd be a top 3 Bond, but as it is, it's a bit... flawed, don't you think?

Also, AVTAK over OP? Would you mind justifying that one?

I love every bit of LTK. Dalton's performance for me is the best Bond performance ever and the closest to Fleming as well. The film has character depth, is spectacular and engaging. It has so many Fleming-esque moments and with its rough tone seems to be way ahead of its time. I like Craig's best efforts but they are a bit too polished for my taste.

OP is John Glen's silliest Bond film in my book. FYEO and AVTAK have a few silly moments but they are both much grittier than OP. They really go all-in with the Tarzan yell, the gorilla suit and the clown make-up. Also AVTAK really scores good points with the unforgettable villains, the climax, the score and Tibbett.

  • I'm tossing up between Goldfinger and From Russia With Love again. I might be favoring the former this time around - probably because it's more my type of Bond film.

I will also defend Dalton's LTK performance by the way; it is usually misjudged around here as 'overacting' but apart from that one moment on the bed when he wakes up after the ninjas are killed Dalton gives a very good performance. It is not overacted, merely more intense and that works with the overall feel the film is trying to convey.

That was back when actors acted. Nowadays they just stare at one another and maybe blink or raise a cheek or something and the audience is supposed to read into it what they want. 'Economy of performance' I think they call it. What a load of bollocks.

    @ForYourEyesOnly

Thanks. Sometimes it's so close that a couple of top/bottom ranks for a film is enough to move it up/down. But I've found the coloured tiers is pretty accurate. Even when Spectre was just released and there were only a few rankings available, it started to form into the tiers

    Mendes4Lyfe's 2016 Rankings:

    1. Dr No (1962)
    2. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
    3. From Russia With Love (1963)
    4. Casino Royale (2006)
    5. Goldfinger (1964)
    6. GoldenEye (1995)
    7. Thunderball (1965)
    8. Live And Let Die (1973)
    9. The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
    10. The Living Daylights (1987)
    11.SPECTRE (2015)
    12. Octopussy (1983)
    13. License To Kill (1989)
    14. Quantum of Solace (2008)
    15. The Man With The Golden Gun (1974)
    16. You Only Live Twice (1967)
    17. For Your Eyes Only (1981)
    18. Skyfall (2012)
    19. A View To A Kill (1985)
    20. Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)
    21. Diamonds Are Forever (1971)
    22. Moonraker (1979)
    23. Die Another Day (2002)
    24. The World Is Not Enough (1999)

So I decided to throw out everything and develop a new ranking from scratch and this is what I came up with. This is the first time I have done a complete 1 - 24 ranking in quite a while, so there are a few surprises. SPECTRE has fallen out of my top ten for the first time since release, which is odd. I suppose the constant rewatching and debating this particular entry has caused me to become somewhat burnt out with it.
I know it might seem like I'm being harsh putting 3 Brosnan films in the bottom 5, but I don't hate Brosnan. His films came at an unfortunate time, I feel. Barry, Adams and Cubby had all gone, so the overall quality of the productions dipped considerably for me. They seemed to just be getting by in these years, and relying on what was popular at the time for inspiration. Its not until 2002 - 2006 that EON did the necessary soul searching and came back with a vengeance.
Goldfinger, GoldenEye and Thunderball have all been locked in a death grip recently, and I think GF finally has emerged the victor, claiming that honoured spot in the top 5. With GF I never feel like a frame of film is wasted, whereas TB has a bit too much flying around in helicopters, making plans, monitoring Palmera etc. It would have been nice if they could have streamlined this a bit more. GF moves like a bullet, we never visit the same set more than once.
