QoS' score is one of the best things about it. I'm not an Arnold hater, per say, but I often don't love his scores for the series, but that is far and away his best work I think. His TND work is also good for its "all or nothing, everything and the kitchen sink" feel. If you've got one shot at a Bond score, as he's talked about, give it everything. So, I get why it's too loud for some people but I tend to feel that way about his last 2 Brosnan scores as opposed to TND which I think sounds great. Not as evocative as QoS, though, and it is easily his best score for the series.

As for the film as a whole, I've come around to elements of it over time, but it's still pretty hard for me to overlook some of its more glaring issues. It is middle-bottom of the pack for me, I think, inching upward slowly.

But I've never understood the superlative praise it is often given as a whole on these boards, even though certain elements of it are certainly masterful/superlative. Definitely not the dumpster-tier entry I once considered it.

There’s a lot of positive rankings for QOS here and yet it was still well down the last league table.

True on both counts. There's still more QoS 'haters' than 'lovers' but there's definitely more love for it on these forums

QoS's score is one of the best things of the whole Craig era, and is more energetic than Barry's later scores (although that may have to do with QoS having more energy as well)

For me any Bond film at 11 is “love”; love almost all of them. And definitely AVTAK almost always sees lower ranking than that. It’s lower on my own list, but I still have loved it lately!
  • @Birdleson As you know I always like your lists and ours often have more similarities than not, but I'm not sure I can forgive QoS passing TB ;)

In any case, nice to see some AVTAK appreciation, as well as seeing you coming around a bit to TLD / OP which are both entries I love.

thanks @JamesCraig... I think the top three are the same films in different order.

DN went up at TB's expense. But I'm happy with the top 10 overall. The big battle in the future is AVTAK and SP.

Unfortunately, for now, nothing will change the bottom two.

I've actually always been highly entertained by AVTAK-- a Goldfinger rip-off in a sense, but entertaining... and there are some very strong scenes-- primarily in the first quarter (minus the BB cover)-- any scenes with Walken and Jones and Moore, and the finale...

It's the production value, and the made-for-TV feel it has once the story hits San Fran (what car was Bond driving? A Chrysler? I don't care if he was posing as a reporter, Bond would have found a way of explaining why this reporter was driving around in a Mercedes! This reeked of budget cuts...)

SP is the opposite-- wonderful production, costumes, design-- woeful villain/story. Painfully boring and lacking in tension...
  • Well to be fair, people's opinion on SP really comes down to what they enjoy with Bond. All your criticisms of SP, some other people would feel the same way about AVTAK. I guess that's what I love about Bond, each film has it's lovers and haters for different reasons.

I think watching QOS on the smaller screen helps it a good deal.

I agree @Birdleson ... the outstanding production values on SP is what you called it: window-dressing.

If you don't have a proper story/script in place to anchor everything to come, to be the foundation of all the creative decisions that will happen, the "house" then collapses on itself.

Sadly, that's what happened to SP, IMO.
  • @Birdleson I think that also speaks to the strength of SF, and I see exactly what you're saying. If QoS had been the last Bond film, it'd be a far more difficult pill to swallow (for the reasons you've mentioned, and others as well). However, since we've gotten installment(s) after it that've solidified that the film was a one-off exploration of some of the aspects of the character (not all of which I agree with / find valid, but some) we can more easily embrace QoS. It sounds like that's what you're saying?

In a way we have the strong, more classical entries to thank for our appreciation of the oddities.

Well, the concept behind SP is pretty strong and personally quite fascinating. Can't argue with people who find the film "lifeless" or "boring", that's fair, but beside a script that doesn't always seems able to fully capitalize the inherent values of the film, I don't think they built a mammoth chatedral without foundations. I see SP as a kind of a film like The Dark Knight Rises. Bigger, less focused on character development than the previous entry but at the same time extremely satisfying and cool in its magniloquence.

After my recent Bondathon of Moore and Brosnan films i'm afraid in this latest ranking Brozza gets a bit of a proverbial kicking. Much prefer Moore to Brosnan as Bond. Never thought i'd say that...
