I recently watched that. Funny that the captain in the pilot episode is named Christopher Pike, before Kirk takes over in the next episode. And now a Christopher Pine is playing Kirk.

I’m thinking I should start a Dscovery/Picard appreciation thread, but I’d probably be talking to myself in it. :-??

    Just kidding.

I rather like Picard. Still haven't watched Discovery.

Was there anyone besides Mr Spock who made it past the pilot? I didn t notice.

Picard started well enough but it soon fell flat. Still love Patrick Stewart and would watch him sitting and reading the phone book all day long.

There was only one character, and he was just a guest role in both the pilot and “The Enemy Within”.

Aha, thanks. No wonder I didn t notice that male human. Glad they swapped the characters. The original ones weren t much charismatic.

The overhaul with the cast was also due to the network demanding a cast with diversity, as Roddenberry’s original cast were notably all white.

Certainly makes sense in a united world.

It's also one of the things that debunks the many myths that surround Roddenberry as a visionary. A united Earth was just a byproduct of NBC demanding more diversity for their programming, as it was something they were proud to promote, especially as they pushed for all their shows to be featured in color TVs. People read it as Earth having overcome racism, and Roddenberry embraced that interpretation to the point that by TNG he claimed humans no longer had any conflict.

The biggest myth that was debunked for me was the idea that NBC rejected Majel Barrett's character in "The Cage" because they couldn't accept a female first officer. That was a story Roddenberry kept telling at fan conventions. The truth was that the executives were pissed off to learn that she was one of Roddenberry's mistresses, feeling that kind of nepotism was unethical at the workplace, a sentiment especially shared by Lucille Ball. That's why she later showed up in a blonde wig and a new name credit, as that's how Roddenberry snuck her onto the set before they realized who she actually was.

I’ve finally begun the original Star Trek series, starting with The Man Trap. Really fantastic start IMO; the characters are perfectly established, and the threat / villain was very strong here. I’ve seen a couple episodes before, but now I’m finally going to make my way through the whole original series. I have seen all the movies, and have always had a partiality for the original cast + characters.

Funnily, it wasn’t even the first episode shot for the series. It was “Where No Man Has Gone Before”, which strangely ended up being aired as the third episode rather than the first. Then there’s that business with the rejected pilot, but that’s another story.

I did read a bit of background on those two, yes. Just going in the order of the complete series DVD set :)

That is pretty cool, the deepfake technology is moving fast.

There are rumours Mark Hamill sold his image rights to Disney so a CGI Luke can appear in later films when the technology is at the required level. I could see this happening with Indy, Star Trek or even Bond later down the road. In ten or twenty years most tentpole movies could be CGI and we would not know the difference.

@Fire_and_Ice_Returns Thank you! Three episodes in and I’m loving just about every bit thus far! I was pleasantly surprised by all the horror elements that are present! I get a sort of Twilight Zone vibe a few times, which is meant as a high compliment. Much has already been said about the excellent chemistry between characters, so I’ll just say I agree!

I have them on Bluray I an due a rewatch, I tend to revisit them every few years or so. The writing certainly in the first two seasons is so good it resonates in any time period you rewatch it. Are you watching the remastered version with new special effects?

Nice! Yes it’s remastered; do you have a preference between the older and remastered ones?

I tend to watch the remastered versions they did such a good job making it look authentic. I occasionally watch the original versions just to compare. I have noticed now on UK TV or Netflix they show the remastered version.

The whole pilot episode is incorporated into the two-parter "The Menagerie", which I found pretty daft. At least we learn that season one takes place 13 years after the pilot, and that Spock has been serving on the Enterprise 24 years until then.

In a lot of ways I prefer “The Menagerie” because it does get rid of a few problematic elements and ties in with the TOS proper. I always say you should only watch “The Cage” after you’ve finished TOS because that pilot never aired during the show’s original run and is best viewed as its own thing. Netflix placing it as the first episode is pretty dumb because I have no doubt for the uninitiated it’s confusing to just start off that way.

I stumbled on this brief interview with Bruce Botnick (from 3 Months ago) whilst looking for something else.

Bruce mentions at 2:45 that a 4K restoration of Star Trek: The Motion Picture is in process also with Dolby Atmos, awesome not heard anything prior to this. This Masterpiece of a film will be elevated to an even greater level, can't wait.

Really hope to see the Director's Edition in glorious 4K. It's a crime that it's stuck in standard definition.

I was reading through the YouTube comments one poster did mention the Directors Edition also being restored, how much truth is in that no idea. The additional visual effects were superb, though they would have to redo all the effects again at a much higher resolution. Hopefully some good money will be put into this restoration, the film deserves it.

As a matter of fact the producers that worked on the DE have been in talks with Paramount. Even better is that they still have the raw visual elements archived so they could be able to re-edit them back into the director's cut at a higher resolution.

A lot of the same people that worked on the DE have also worked on DEEP SPACE NINE and VOYAGER, that they archived their work on those show and have been able to upload samples of what their work would look like when upgraded to a higher resolution.
