Aunt Harriet, anybody? Remember, AH was created in the comics specifically to replace Alfred when he "died" at the beginning of the Julius Schwartz "New Look" Batman in the mid-60s. (Spoiler alert: Alfred got better -- but first, he became a villain called "The Outsider.")

Alfred is male, if they make Alfred female then its a different character and not Alfred.

  • Do you remember Fat Alfred? Or Alfred as the Outsider? Alfred wasn't always an action hero in his own right... The point being, change happens constantly, especially when DC Comics are adapted into a different medium. Both Kryptonite and Jimmy Olsen were first created for the Superman radio show in the early '40s. A female non-costumed aide to Batman shouldn't be beyond the realm of acceptability. As @Revelator suggested, this character could be Leslie Thompkins (who already exists in Bat-lore) -- or she could be a totally new creation. I'm not going to judge until this character actually hits the screen.

Exactly. And the idea of Alfred having past military training is a relatively new addition to the character's history.

Both Aunt Harriett and the Barbara Gordon version of Batgirl were created essentially because the Batcave is so testosterone-heavy. Julius Schwartz has flat-out stated that he added Aunt H. to the cast to counter the Wertham-era accusations of Batman & Robin being "a homosexual's wish-dream"...and Batgirl came about because the ABC network wanted to have a regular female character (in tight clothing!) added to the cast to keep adult males watching the '60s era "camp" Batman show once ratings had started to decline.

I agree. At least it's not like Superman where it's either Lex Luthor, General Zod or a made up villain.
  • "Made up villain"? You mean there really IS a Luthor and a General Zod out here in the real world somewhere? ;)

Oh, I know what you mean. But actually, Brainiac is a perfectly serviceable villain, as is Doomsday, Metallo or the Parasite. And Mr. Mxyzptlk could certainly make a live-action Supermovie interesting...

I agree. I hear rumors that Brianiac is being sent up for the Supergirl movie, though. I would be ok with that.

Perhaps the new film will be inspired by The Long Halloween

How Javier Bardem would look as Two-Face. We need him as a DC villain soon!

Take with a grain of salt, but I would support it. I still would like to see her in James Bond, though.

    https://screenrant.com/batman-robin-matt-reeves-introduction-right/

It's justified. I think it's time to reintroduce Robin. If six villains are truly in it. It would make sense for Batman to have a sidekick to learn the ropes.

    I'd support him.

Six villains in one movie ? Didn't we go the same road before ? And that killed the franchise for quite some time. One villain per movie is enough, methinks.

All of this depends on what they're going to do with the villains. Certain comics, television episodes and animated movies have little trouble telling a cool Batman story with tons of villains. The difference is: they mostly treat these villains as pre-established characters who don't need another origin story. The audience is expected to know who they are and what their character traits are. Even if the film were to take place over the span of one night, Batman could easily cross paths with six of these, provided the narrative is episodic and at most one or two of these villains turn out to be the chief masterminds behind whatever it is that keeps him occupied that night.

To be honest, that's the dynamic I want to see played out in a Batman film for a change. Like Arkham Asylum, the entire adventure takes place during one single night, and Batman won't be allowed to pause. The Dark Knight's darkest night, as it were, forces him to do the best detecting he can, or else. We don't have to introduce the Batman or his allies and foes to the audience anymore. As with Mad Max Fury road, the adventure kicks in immediately and doesn't slow down until the end creds. There will be traps set for Batman which require his problem solving skills, there will be fights, physical and rhetorical, there will be a lot of "Sherlocking" but also some "Jamesbonding". Some villains supplied stuff, other villains do the fighting, others still have done all the thinking and must confront an exhausted Batman for the climax. And all through the night, Batman's moral fibre is submitted to some serious stress tests.

Of course, none of the above will happen anytime soon, as filmmakers generally prefer to tell a "personal", "myth-expanding", "intricate" plot. And yet, sometimes The Long Halloween, or something even more narrow in scope, truly is good enough, so that we can focus on what Batman and the others do rather than--again and ad nauseam--on where they come from and what motivates them. (Even then, you can work such things in there.) Sometimes, simple is better. Either way, what I'm trying to say is that several villains can work, unless they ALL demand the big spotlights, in which case: no, it won't work.

It's definitely an interesting choice and I can kind of see it working. Seems Vanessa Kirby is starting to become a breakout star following the Crown.
