    Guillermo Del Toros
    Pinnochio (2022)
Was looking forward to seeing this, and was hoping for a darker take on the classic story, and for this Del Toro doesn't disappoint. Beautifully animated, it has a more political slant with the rise of Fascism. Thing is, I became a bit restless at the halfway point, and it didn't hold my attention as I hoped. The anticipated finale with the giant whale is well done, though the Whale reminded me a lot of Terry Gilliams creation from 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen'

Fantastic Planet (La Planète Sauvage), 1973

    0h15uyc0gsos.jpg

This fantastic, allegorical '70s science-fiction film never ceases to amaze me, no matter how outdated its animation.

Humans or 'Oms' are pets, cattle and vermin to a more advanced race on an unspecified planet. They try to subsist on what little they can find, while being toyed with and hunted down. Aided by deliciously weird and sometimes disturbing visuals, this story serves as social commentary on Apartheid, racism and the Holocaust itself.

While the film managed to find critical acclaim (and still does), notorious film ignoramus Siskel didn't quite see it that way. Gene, that's because you were a bit full of yourself, wouldn't you say? Anyway, this is a film I love to watch at night, enjoying both its eerie vibes as well as its awkward animation.

Definitely one I should give a watch.

As for Siskel, I don’t want to speak ill about the dead, but man he could sometimes act as if he was the only valid film critic in the entire world.

He threw Betsy Palmer's address out in the open so that people could find her and complain about Friday The 13th. Am I the only one to find this seriously offensive and, in fact, illegal? I don't care if he didn't have the stomach for a simple thriller. You just don't do that.

That’s terrible, I never heard about that. I always felt he was way too critical of everything Bond that didn’t star Connery. Not because he had any valid argument, he was just per definition ‘no Connery, no party’.

In the internet era, it's called doxxing, and it's definitely illegal. I have a tough time coming up with a concrete purpose of critics. Sure, they "protect your hard earned dollars by telling you which films you should see and which you shouldn't", but I feel like casuals already know what they're going to want to see, and enthusiasts see everything, and it's all subjective anyways, so really, what's the point?

... it's Seagal time. I haven't watched one in a few weeks (yes this is still happening, even if I have slowed down), so last night, I watched Mercenary For Justice

Did anything about this film make any sense? I looked in to the film after watching in it, and apparently, not only was a lawsuit on hand in case Seagal started.... being Seagal, but also the Producers screwed with the film just to spite the big fella. Wow.

This film has aged well I was laughing a lot Clark Griswold is totally nuts, I am doing a reverse rewatch of the series, I plan to watch Christmas Vacation on Christmas day.

I think Vegas Vacation may be funnier than the second film, it will be interesting to see if that's true when I get to European Vacation.

For my money, Vegas Vacation is the funniest of the four films, and it's my favorite. Hilarious from beginning to end.

    Vegas
is definitely better than I remember it, I do love the first and third films. It;s only the second film I am not overly keen on, it was a bit bloated and the humor took a bit of a back seat.

I watched the recent Vacation and it was instantly forgettable, Even though Chevy Chase appears in it I don't see the film as part of the series.

One of the few "must see" films I had left for the year was Alejandro G. Iñárritu's latest film, Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, and it didn't disappoint in the slightest, a surreal dreamscape where the mystery of what's going on is left unsaid and only becomes fully realized and explained in the film's final 20 minutes. It's not the easiest watch and it's incredibly self-indulgent but I can't stop thinking about it and it will absolutely make my Top 5 of the year.

Batman 89 First time watch for me in 4K, this film is top tier in the genre. I thoroughly enjoyed this rewatch the film looks and sounds amazing. I was taken back to my 14 year old self watching the film in the cinema for the first time. The score is arguably Danny Elfmans very best, many times during this viewing I had chills. Keaton is phenomenal, less is definately more with his Batman and Bruce there are so many great non and minimal dialog scenes with Keaton where he adds so much complexity to the duality/character.

STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE - THE DIRECTOR'S EDITION 4K, this is my favorite Trek film and even more so after watching this remaster several times, it is a work of art.

    Silent Night (2021)

I primarily bought this for the cast which features Matthew Goode and Sope Dirisu, both of whom I'd love to see as Bond, which is alluded to in the film one of the characters refers to Sope's as looking like James Bond which Goode's character (in black tie as well) protests which I found amusing.

Writing wise it's not as sharp as I think it could be, but as a bit of dark Christmassy horror it was a decent 90 minutes.

I saw this movie earlier this year and I thought it remained very topical. A compelling watch. One of the bank clerks is played by Penelope Allen, who has worked with Pacino on several other films, like Scarecrow and Looking for Richard.

    WHERE EAGLES DARE (1968)
My annual Christmas watch. Never get tired of it. Good old fashioned epic, top notch cast, Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood, Michael Hordern, Ferdy Mayne ( love his voice!), and Ingrid Pitt. Spectacular locations, huge action sequences, great stuntwork ( from legendary Yakima Canutt, one of the reasons why Clint signed on!) And a rousing score from Ron Goodwin. Looks fab on bluray! Along with OHMSS, this is the film I always find time for!

After watching Keaton's two films again, his Batman really does kill a lot of people.

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. Still my favorite of the series, best ever Christmas comedy. Seeing Clark have a meltdown is hilarious, the entire cast is on top form.

Klaus: A modern classic that has been permanently added to the Christmas rotation.

It’s A Wonderful Life: It grows on me every year and I definitely appreciated it more this year.

A Christmas Carol (1951): Alistair Sim’s Scrooge and one of my favourite films of all time, Christmas or no.

    Righting Wrongs (1986)

A Crown Prosecutor takes the law into his own hands, and becomes a vigilante, after seeing criminals escape justice one too many times. This brings him into conflict not only with criminals, but a no nonsense CID police detective played by Cynthia Rothrock. Those action sequences are could put todays actions films to shame, the stunt with Hsia Ling-Cheng hanging onto the rope outside the flying plane, must've inspired Tom Cruise with the similar stunt in Mission Impossible: Fallout. The fight between Rothrock and Karen Shepherd was another highlight of the film.

This is an unbelievable release by 88 films, on BR. On top of interviews with various cast and crew, there is also a double-sided poster, some lobby cards, an 80 page glossy booklet and 4(!) cuts of the film. I went with the first cut presented, which is the original HK 1986 cut.

    A Christmas Story (1983)
Watched it Christmas night, and what a treat it was. Set in 1940, tells the simple story of little Ralphie, all he wants for Christmas is a BB gun, but seems doomed in his plans. Directed byBob Clark, it gives a nostalgic glow, and has hilarious sequences of Ralphies schooldays, dealing with bullies ("he had yellow eyes!"), his Dads
( wonderful Darren McGavin) battle with the furnace ( and a pack of local dogs) and best of all, a memorable disastrous trip to see Santa!
The final scenes leave a smile on your face. Dont know why I didnt purchase this film before. Gonna be compulsive viewing every year from now on!

Arguably my favorite movie. You summed up why.

I saw 'A Christmas Story', many years ago on T.V.
It doesn't feature at all, surprisingly, on Telly at this time, and I had fond memories of it but never thought to purchase it on dvd until this year. Ironically, as it arrived by post, the 'Talking Pictures' channel showed it on a Saturday morning! It really should feature as often as 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory', which, ironically, didnt show up on T.V. this year!

Interesting about Wonka especially, would think that was a surefire for this time of year. It appears an emerging holiday viewing tradition around me is Star Wars. Film Forum in NYC played A New Hope all weekend.

I didn't see Star Wars this time around, but I did catch Violent Streets (1974) at Metrograph a couple weeks ago. It was excellent pulp. https://metrograph.com/film/?vista_film_id=9999003048

It's a nice homage to the first one. Most of the original cast are back as adults this time around. Basically, if you liked the original, you'd like this one. Not as good, but much better than any run of the mill Christmas film.

Glass Onion and I had a great time despite the fact that I’m struck down with fever at the moment. So it might be even better when I’m feeling better :))

Knives Out does fit this season better though. The advantage is that there’s one for the Summer and one for the Winter now. Hope they continue making these.
