Interesting that AVTAK has been trending up on your list. I agree there are some great elements in the film. For me OP and MR have been the biggest movers. So much charm to them.

Yep, love MR and OP, they were the first two Bond films I ever saw when I was kid. Every time I do my Bond-a-thons every year Moore's run get better and better. He is so into what's going on, his performances never slack, he only improves with each film. This is in much contrast to Connery, who takes a massive dive into mediocrity and indifference once YOLT hits. It makes me respect Moore much more because of his passion for being Bond.

And Dalton of course is amazing; I cherish his two forever.

7) TMWTGG - I hate to say it but this one is pretty bad.
6) AVTAK - Not the strongest entry but still has plenty to enjoy.
5) MR - Catch me in the right mood and I might place this higher.
4) OP -Highly enjoyable. This is getting difficult now.
3) LALD - Love the cast, dialogue and music. Wardrobe is quite bizarre in some places.
2) FYEO - Superb performance by Moore in a great back to basics film.
1) TSWLM - The shining and defining moment of Sir Rog's career.

Too bloody American? Too pedestrian? Other than producers most that made that rubbish most of the team were British including that B grade director. Chalk this one up to shared guilt.

I think you meant to quote @bondjames

I'm not referring to the directors or the producers. I'm referring to the setting and the way it was filmed. They were dealing with one of the most beautiful American ciities. Film it in a better fashion.

It was done in a pedestrian fashion and San Francisco did not look its best compared to how that city has been shown in other movies (Basic Instinct, Bullit etc. etc.). At least have a benchmark car chase on those streets for pete's sake. Not some sad Fire truck chase.

And Stacy's house? Am I watching a cheap tv show or am I watching James Bond

Could have been so much more. Bond films usually make the best use of locations compared to other movies. This was not the case here. It was a lazy effort in the US. Paris was done well though.

In chronological order...

7) Dr. No's Lair - I suppose this is cheating as it's more of a prison but I wouldn't mind spending a night there. Especially if Honey comes with the room.

6) The Whyte House - As long as I have access to the penthouse of course.

5) Sardinia Hotel (TSWLM) - Looks cozy.

4) Cortina Hotel (FYEO) - Perhaps not as glamorous but I love that view.

3) Hotel Splendide (CR) - Gorgeous.

2) Bolivian Hotel (QoS) - Would help me to forget that I'm in Bolivia.

1) Shanghai Hotel (SF) - What a view... for a swim.

Does Piz Gloria count as a kind of hotel? Then yes!

1. Piz Gloria (OHMSS)
2. Cortina Hotel (FYEO)
3. Hotel Splendide (CR)
4. Ocean Club Resort (CR)
5. Hamburg Hotel (TND)
6. The hot springs ryokan in YOLT (just making this into a hotel for me ...)
7. Hotel Danieli (MR) in Venice

Hoping Bond 24 gives me a gorgeous hotel of some sorts in Italy; Rome or anywhere there. I want to visit Italy! We have already seen some potentially gorgeous hotels in Austria, so I am hopeful for that, too.

And I just found this blog, which is unfamiliar to me, but has a list of Bond film hotels. and the blog is mainly about Japan, so it may be of interest to some of you. Seems to have some great photos and the blogger seems to write about films often.

Update: I read a bit on the blog and it is a pretty good one! He talks about all kinds of films. And tons of info about Japan.

FWIW: Count this among all the other coincidences between Daniel Craig and James Bond: Craig starred in a 2000 film titled Hotel Splendide.

That Kerim is quick on the draw. So mine would usually look rather like his list, too, but let me add a few things different since I can only list 5 (but I want his, too) ...let's see:

1. Either: "I've been expecting you, Mr. Bond" or "Did you think you were expected, Mr. Bond?"
2. Yes, a cat. Somewhere. Or a reference to a cat. With or without a diamond necklace on the darn cat. :)
3. An amazing evil lair - it can be SPECTRE headquarters or the villain in this piece's home/hangout (not necessarily Blofeld).
4. A speargun reference somehow; yep, I want that.
5. Bond with the main Bond girl at the end, both alive and very well thank you very much (even though evil lurks ... to be continued) ;)

@Kerim has nailed it.

I'd like to add one other point that I have mentioned elsewhere:

I'd really like to see Spectre head honchos discussing their diabolical plot without Bond being present. Something like the legendary Kronsteen/Klebb/Blofeld/piranha discussion in FRWL, or the similarly iconic No. 1, No. 2 group table discussion in TB, when the lackadaisical Spectre operative is electrocuted and Largo doesn't bat an eyelid.....

It seems like everything has to be explained directly to Bond these days, in a one-on-one expose. I'm not averse to that either, but would also like the villain group discussion sans-Bond, old-school style.

Obviously @Kerim put down my choices too.

My extra point would be about music. In TB, when Fiona picks Bond up from the beach, Barry plays this little "spectre" tune. I've always liked that. Perhaps Newman can come up with something similar...

Transition PTS-OT:
N/A for DN

Music:
I know it's usually considered a weak opening but I actually like those strange sound effects before the Bond Theme kicks in. After that, the powerful Bond Theme is the best way for our beloved series to start off. But then we get into that Jamaican dance music followed by the Three Blind Mice song. It's the first and last time they mix various musical pieces together but I'm not offended by it. I like the Jamaican section of the film very much, and the dance music sort of preps me up for that. The Three Blind Mice we probably could have done without but it's part of a bigger context and as such it doesn't merely work, it's very effective as musical irony. Here's what sounds like an innocent kids' song yet very soon these three "blind" men ruthlessly kill Strangways. This moment actually tells audiences that DN means business.

The dots are playful and hardly sophisticated but I like the swinging energy they bring to the whole. Not sure we needed the words spread out over dots and boxes but at the risk of raising controversy I must admit I still like it better than female bodies just swimming (TB) or Japanese girls just blandly staring at us (YOLT). The dancers' silhouettes are pretty neat when viewed in a time capsule. I feel like Binder nailed the early 60s right there. And as for the Three Blind Mice section, it's actually fairly unique in the Bond series to have straight movie shots for the OT. I think Binder's first Bond OT rocked!

Movie Title Font:
An old-fashioned typewriter font; me likes! Fits the film's age perfectly.

Transition OT-Movie:
The Blind Mice thing makes the transition easy and smooth by default so I have no complaints.

Favourite moment?:
Bit silly perhaps but when Binder makes his dots go up and down at the rhythm of the music, I'm having fun. :-)

Transition PTS-OT: PTS here is really just the gun-barrel sequence which, if you think about it, is brilliant the way it ends with the circle shrinking down to a dot, which launched the dot sequence.
Music: Classic, absolutely classic, and I do like the insertion of the calypso bit.
Images: Ingenious. Born I suppose of the gun-barrel sequence dissolving into a dot. Its 60s. Its hip. Its appropriate for a fledgling movie which at the time didn't know if it would even be successful enough to fuel another. Then carrying the flat, bold colors into the silhouettes of the calypso section... Love it.
Movie Title Font: Goes with the dots. 'nough said.
Transition OT-Movie: Almost art-house movieish as we go from the calypso to "Three Bind Mice"....and three (allegedly) bind men.
Favorite moment:Look, I get friggin goosebumps when that music starts and the dots start flashing....

@sunsanvil, great post! Yes! You could think of a transition PTS-OT what with the gun-barrel morphing into the dotted main sequence of the OT. Makes perfect sense!
