When I saw it at the cinema, it was officially the worst film ever made, in the history of any movie made ever, and my opinion hasn't altered ever since. If anything it has gone down in my estimation even more since that fateful day (if that is at all possible).

It makes MR and DAF look like masterpieces in comparison.

I read a comment like this, and can only think, this person has not watched very many films.

As Vesper might have said, there are bad films, and there are bad films. ;)

I'm a massive film fan so I take exception to that. My favourite directors are Kubrick, Spielberg, Tony Scott, Nicolas Roeg and Scorsese. My favourite film ever is The Long Good Friday.

But I also have Superman and Top Gun in my top films too, so maybe my taste is slightly off for some... ;)

Of course, I think it’s only the third worst Bond film.
That's the most shocking thing I will read today on the internet...

    :-O

DAD ain’t good. But it’s never aggressively dull like TND and TWINE.

After my recent viewing, I’m afraid Die Another Day stops being good the minute Bond stops his heartbeat. And that’s only 10 minutes in...

Nobody ever talks about that scene! DAD is an abominable movie, but that scene is actually an insult to Fleming imo, we are in Derek Flint territory here! I couldn't believe what I was watching ( and the bloody rest!)

I think TND is good fun, but yeah I’d agree that TWINE commits a worse crime of being a bit dull. I’d also probably put DAD above DAF; that’s a bit too all over the shop for me. I don’t think it’s the worst.

Agreed. It's offensivelly out of place in a Bond movie, one of many such elements in DAD.

Ahhh yes. `Offensive and DAD'. Two words that inextricably belong together, like `fish and chips', `bread and butter', `chalk and cheese', `love and marriage', `horse and carriage', etc.

Totally agree. When I walked out of DAD I was making my own preparations to finally give up on Bond forever. Hands down, this was the biggest stinker of a big budget movie I'd seen up until then, let alone Bond movie, and it also had some of the shoddiest SFX put on screen.

As @Mathis1 pointed out, it's only 10 minutes in and Bond decreases his heart rate until it stops, thereby faking a cardiac arrest so he can make a full blown escape!! That's well within the first 30 minutes and the movie is fast heading over a cliff, and it just keeps on going.

Most of my vitriol was recorded in the old KTBEU forums back in 2002 when there were plenty of fans defending DAD, calling it the Bond for the 21st century. I'm just grateful that MGM put the kibosh on a Jinx spinoff movie that was to be directed by Neil Jordan, and instead worked on doing a deal with Sony to obtain the rights to Casino Royale.

EON already got the rights to CR in 1999. They intentionally held off on adapting it so they could save it for a new Bond actor.

This is why I never take the “what would CR look like with Brosnan” discussions seriously, because if he had come back for a fifth film it wouldn’t have been CR.

It was a stupid ridiculous concept that didn’t even work within the confines of the film it’s in. Like is Bond supposed to be some kind of Monk to be able to do that? It’s one of the worst moments in the history of Bond.

Pick a scene, any scene, and I'll tell you what's great about it.

I think I’d need psychiatric counseling if I watched this movie again. I’ve seen it once, and that’s a plenty. Absolutely no part of this movie was enjoyable for me. I remember several people walking out of this movie when I watched it. DAD almost ended the franchise, Casino saved it.

Ok. The selfinflicted cardigan arrest. What's great about it?

The PTS. What's great about it?

Madonna's song. What's great about it?

CGI surfing, invisible cars, faking cardiac arrests, Madonna's song, Emporer Palpatine style laser fights, `James I'll be half the girl I used to be', etc. etc.

I'm looking forward to hearing what is great about everything I just mentioned.

I'm getting angry just thinking about it. I need to calm down...

    The whole PTS is great.
Madonna's song is great in that it fits the title sequence.
Bond surfing a CGI wave meant no stuntmen got killed. That's great.
Invisible car was ahead of its time.
Stopping his heartbeat allowed Bond to escape. And get a kiss. That's great for him. And we see more flashbacks in the cell. Great for us, but not him.
The laser fight is great because lasers.
Jinx dialogue is fine in that scene.
And Broz looks great in a cardigan.

    Nothing.

    Nothing.

    Nothing.

How people can bash any of the Craig movies (including Skyfall which for some reason is despised by some "troo Bondfanz") and like or at least tolerate DAD is beyond me.

I must say though that Brosnan's performance is not to blame.

I’ll be honest and say that QOS and Spectre are probably worse films than Die Another Day. Die Another Day at least knows it’s stupid, entertaining fun, it’s somewhat self aware in its stupidity, but that doesn’t forgive any of the flaws in that film. Like I said before in this thread, this film stops being good the minute Bond stops his own heartbeat, and that’s like 10 minutes in. Whereas QOS and Spectre try to be something deep and meaningful in their own ways, but fall completely flat on their faces, and ultimately in the end, they just end up being boring and shallow films with little to no redeeming elements. I’d at least take a stupid romp like Die Another Day, over the dull and dour slugfests that are hard to watch. Still, all three films are at the very bottom of the gunbarrel for me.

There's been several posts referencing Bond stopping his heart ten minutes in, but hey, let's at least give credit where credit is due. The pre-title sequence is 13 minutes long, so Bond stopping his heart is likely more around the 25 minute mark or so. Thus, the film is good for approximately 25 minutes. It's only fair. ;)

I’ll admit that pre title sequence is quite entertaining, but like 25 minutes is not enough to make up for just how south Die Another Day goes after that. I can’t believe I liked this movie as a kid...

We have discussed this as well. In my opinion the pts is not good. It is boring and unimaginative.

QOS is the worst of the Craig Bonds, SP is just so bland. But that doesn't change the fact that DAD is the worst Bondmovie ever made imho.
