If skyfall gets bad reviews will you still go see it at the cinema?

    This reminds me of a discussion I had a few years back with a friend who is a screenwriter - we were discussing *why* people see the films that they do. Apparently most people (though not all) follow a similar pattern.

    First they see films based on genre. For example, they'll see or rent almost every action film that comes out (or sci-fi, or fantasy, or horror, etc). This usually happens when people are younger. Then they get attached to certain stars. So then they'll see films based on which stars are in them - i.e. seeing every film that a certain actor is in because they're a huge fan, or *not* seeing films that are headlined by actors that they don't like regardless of how good the reviews are. Then after a while people start choosing films based on perception of quality - sometimes reviews, sometimes the track record of the people or studio involved.

    I can say myself that after seeing thousands of films I'm more picky than I was in the past. One bad review certainly wouldn't put me off but if almost every review was negative then I'd be wary of a film. But of course "brand loyalty" supersedes this. So if SF got uniformly bad reviews I would likely still see it - as a Bond fan there would be enough that I would still find interesting in the film that it would make it worth seeing.

    Even a "bad" Bond film can still be a fun experience - seeing DAD on opening night was the most fun I had seeing a Bond film in the theatre because it was such a party atmosphere and the audience was so into it - laughing and groaning along with the film, embracing how ridiculous and OTT it was. Was it the best Bond film I saw in a theatre? Of course not, but the *experience* was fun.

    To my knowledge, God has blessed you with a working brain that gives you At least a functional capacity to formulate your own independent opinion on anything. Why let the opinions of others deter you from experiencing something yourself, which in any event you'll see anyway even though later rather than sooner.

    QoS got some crappy reviews and yet there are die hard Bond fans that love the film to death. Had they jumped on the hate bandwagon and decided not bothering to see it, they would have lost out.

    If your a Bond fan, regardless of the opinions of critics you'd make an effort to go see the film as a matter of principle.

    I'm a diehard Bond fan. No amount of terrible reviews could stop me from going to see this opening night. And, unless it somehow manages to be worse than Moonraker, On Her Majestys Secret Service, and Die Another Day combined, I'll see it at least a dozen more times, just like I did with the 3 movies I just mentioned, my least favorite Bond movies, which I'd still rather watch than most non-Bond movies.

    +1 Each one has to see a film to really have an opinion. It doesn't matter what Kerkemode or any other critic say, You might have the same opinion in many things, but what if this was the only thing you didn't think the same thing he does? I would give it a shot.
    For example I really like QOS, it's a movie that has been growing in me since the first view and that has been climbing up positions in my rank up to the top 10, and loads of critics, even some that I usually agree with said it was rubbish and that it wasn't worth a penny.

    What a curious bottom 3 you have.

    I can understand someone having over the top films like DAD or MR down there and conversely someone who loves the over the top films having FRWL and OHMSS down there but to have a mix of both the worst and best film strikes me as utterly bizarre.

    I have a feeling this is going to be very well received, we could well have one of the most critically acclaimed Bond films of all time. Not unless these trailers are hiding a multitude of sins and Mendes dropped the ball most spectacularly, then no I think Skyfall is going to be the mutts nuts.

    Bond films are critic proof anyway, the mixed reaction to QOS didn't harm it's boxoffice did it now?

    Also I went to see them all since SWLM with the exception of OP for some reason or other and yes I even wasted my hard earned cash on the Brosnan era so I'll be there infact my tickets are booked for a performance 4pm on the 26th.

    All I have to say is that anyone who calls themselves a Bond fan and wouldn't see the film in the theater based on a review- is no real Bond fan. This film I'm not worried about at all :)

    I couldn't possibly care less about what ANYONE else on this planet has to say about the film.

    I'm excited. I'm a big Bond fan. I just purchased tickets to the midnight showing. On November 8th, I'll be sitting in a theater, waiting for the clock to strike 12 and the film to start. Screw the opinions of others for this.

    This question is a severe improbability. And anyway, it's Bond! Of course I'm going. I have the strong feeling that this will be in my top 5.

    Okay, so because it's Bond's fiftieth and Bond has always been my childhood hero of sorts, there is nothing that is stopping me from being in IMAX at the first showing of "Skyfall" out of sheer respect for the franchise. And honestly, I follow quite a few movie critics, but the Bond series is one that always seems to transcend whatever is said. After Roger Moore's "Moonraker" and Pierce Brosnan's "Die Another Day" were riddled with bad reviews when viewed in the context of the franchise itself, Bond always exhibits, as the character himself says in the "Skyfall" trailer, "resurrection." Because "Skyfall" will carry that retro feel and the ending, as Sam Mendes has supposedly said, could have been pulled straight from a 60s spy film, there will probably be some critics who are turned off by the lack of shaky camera angles and quick, action-packed cuts. But ultimately, I'm steering clear of all critical reviews until I see the film. Then I'll argue with the critics over the quality of the film. But out of reassurance, Mendes has promised an "epic" Bond film. With an estimated runtime of 145 minutes, ("OHMSS" having a 140 minute runtime and "Casino Royale" at 144) "Skyfall" looks to be a throwback to the slow-burn missions of the Connery years, similar to "Casino Royale." So there's hope for the most radical Connery- and Moore-onlyists out there in the critical world. Perhaps they will find something to love about "Skyfall." As for me, I'll be there and loving every minute of it. Then, per my tradition, I'm going back to do it again.

    Wasn't around for MR but DAD wasn't really panned. It got some bad, some good, so pretty mixed really.

    Yes, sorry about that. Critically, you are correct. I was thinking in terms of the franchise and was writing vague. As far as the series goes, they were critically panned as being two of the worst. Thank you for catching that discrepancy.

    This was my initial thought too, although for some reason it's frowned upon in these parts to suggest there can be varying degrees of fandom. Questioning whether you're going to see a Bond film suggests you're not even a casual fan.

    ^Seriously-- every time a new Bond trailer has come out, never once did I think 'Wow this looks stupid'

    I will see each Bond movie in the theatre from now until the end of time

    All I can think is, that its amazing how many replied in all earnest to this question. I am sure, the poster didn't mean it seriously. Even I am Bondfan enough to go see every one there is - just because.

    Of course I will. Its a Bond film. Even if it gets a 3% score on rottentomatoes I will go!
    Not that thats going to happen - I predict at least over 90%! There I said it.

    I don't give a rats ass about film critics. I don't need any frustrated filmmaker who didn't have the cajones to make his or her own movie and they felt it easier to tear down other artists work.

    That being said, I never read reviews of films I plan on seeing.
    I'm gonna see Skyfall and I don't care what anyone says. If I read any review it will be after I see the film .

    I havew been waiting for this for to many years. Almost in tears at the end of Quantum as SO disappointed, So no matter what people say, I will be watching it at the cinema more than once - roll on october 26th and lets hope my local cinema even puts on a 25th midnight showing

    Honestly, anyone here is pretty much a hardcore fan and I can see that negative reviews aren't going to deter anyone thus far posting. It's the occasional poster who comes here to complain about Craig mostly in mind, like that bilge rat Capt. Flounders who says he's a fan but won't go as long as Craig is Bond. These people aren't the true fans IMHO.

    I read them if they're spoiler free, but I see the film even if they say it's bad.

    I used to read Ebert's reviews, but the man is so backward in opinions and tends to reveal spoilers out of nowhere, so I stopped bothering.

    I'm one of the biggest bond fans who has watched all of the bond films several times at least and in total hundreds of times.
    I have heaps of bond collectables and all the films.

    I meant the post as a serious question and just because it is a new bond film, it doesn't mean you have to go see it if it gets terrible reviews in the cinema in my opinion, because you are a "serious" bond fan as some seem to suggest in my opinion.

    It's a great expereince seeing films especially bond films in the cinema and i hope sf is a good one but like i said if the reviews are bad I'll wait till it's released on dvd.

    I'd rather rewatch the bond films i love than go see a stinker of a bond film with qos like reviews if that happens with sf.

    I'm going on release day and don't intend to read or take any notice what anyone else says. I'll make up my own mind. Just can't imagine, from what I've seen so far, that it would garner any 'bad' reviews. Roll on the 26th!
