Skyfall reminds me a bit of both TWINE and GE.... TWINE for the reasons stated above by others - but GE in that a former MI6 agent has turned rouge and plans to exact his revenge on England (maybe not on a grand scale, but obviously by targeting a government official) out of personal spite.... I remember thinking this going in to see the film...

however, this film does a good job with the story.. i appreciate it's slow burn towards the climax.... Bond films don't need to be crammed to the gills with action where its not needed - that was part of the problem with TWINE... it was too stubborn on keeping with the traditional Bond formula (even more so during the Brosnan era, with the overuse of heavy action sequences) that when it came time for the more personal stuff, it felt like the film just slammed on the brakes... it was a disjointed film suffering from an identity crisis..... in many ways, TWINE was a practice run for SF - where they finally got it right.

Has this been posted yet? Everything wrong with Skyfall in 4 mins.. http://youtu.be/xmoIDKqfY44
  • It's a TWINE remake, imo, but done better. Many parts of TWINE were meant to be taken seriously but difficult given the shallowness.

Skyfall was meant to be taken seriously but impossible given the ridiculousness.

It felt like Purvis and Wade were heavily recycling TWINE when it came to Skyfall. @thelivingroyale sums it up nicely above. The fact they both feature London heavily, as well as Scotland and Istanbul hadn't occurred to me before. The similarities really are incredible. SF is probably the slightly better film though, mainly due to DC.

But to be fair, SF probably owes as much to TMWTGG.

I'm sorry, but TWINE is a great film. Possibly even top 10 for me. I really just don't agree with most of the fims critiques, it at least that they are nearly as significant as some say they are. The biggest three flaws: Iffy scriptwriting, Denise Richards, Too much with over the top gadgets.

TWINE is a frustrating movie. It had so much potential to be so much more but it's biggest flaw was in its execution. The dramatic scenes lacked effectiveness and genuine sincerity; the action was largely a bit boring and Carlyle was criminally wasted. I don't have that much of an issue with Richards, sure she's not a great actress but she was serviceable; great eye candy but she was less a distraction than many other things in the film. All in all, TWINE is entertaining enough but it's a just below average Bond film at best. Had the film's premise been better realised and better executed it could have been an amazing movie.

In a way, Skyfall is inspired by several Bond films.

Goldfinger - The core formula, of course.

Goldeneye - The villain is an MI6 traitor believed to be dead and now is trying to convince Bond that MI6 is bad.

The World Is Not Enough - The villain wants to take revenge against M and kill M

Die Another Day - Bond nearly dies, but escapes death, comes back to life and continues his mission. And the cyanide bit.

Don't forget the beards. I'm not saying Brosnan's beard in DAD inspired Craig's in SF, but it is an interesting coincidence that in both films, Bond has a beard during the time between the PTS and the film proper.

Err... What about TMWTGG? I think SF owes a LOT more to that movie Than GF or DAD.

Agreed. I don't really see any immediate comparisons with GF, but TMWTGG, for sure. Villain gives the impression that he sees Bond as an equal. Resides on an island in an exotic locale. Is essentially tracked via a bullet. Bond beds his mistress during his pursuit (first interaction is in a Macau casino, too). Like Goodhead, MP is MI6 and liases with Bond on location.

You can chuck in the radio as a nod to the tracking device in GF.

There are nods to GF but the plot is TMWTGG, YOLT and TWINE

The similarities can be explained because the movies are inspired from the same source: the novels. Mostly MR, YOLT and TMWTGG. Also the PTS is inspired by FAVTAK.

A lot of the TMWTGG links are cinematic, hence why I feel it has a similar tone.

Yes exactly. Had this discussion on another thread. SF is heavily based on TMWTGG movie - not the novel.

Have you read the novel? There's a lot of elements lifted from it.

Okay I need to read it. But I keep on getting very conflicting messages on this. Loads of people tell me that the TMWTGG film has little to do with the novel but SF resembles the film a lot, so I'm unclear about where the influences are coming from.

The thing I noticed about SF is that nearly every major scene is a re-imagination of another scene from a previous Bond film. I'm pretty sure it was done by intention, given it was a 50th anniversary film. It's really quite brilliant to see how they did that.

-Bond returns after a long absence, thought for dead.
-He is sent to a mission to get him back on his track.
    -The villain is Hispanic.
-The mission is a lot about revenge over the death of fellow agents.
-Relative peripheral role of the Bond girl.
-Bond girl to assist him on a mission, relation ambiguous, maybe platonic.
-Bond uses a gun to shoot a target over a woman's head.
-An attempt is made on M's life.
-Said attempt done in M's office.
-Allusion to M's predecessor, who died murdered.
    -The villain is a mercenary.
-The villain uses the Bond girl (or, in this instance, a dummy), to push Bond to the edge and play with his mind.

I might be missing a few similarities, but overall the novel TMWTGG heavily inspired SF.

@bondjames, you are right about the re-imaginations of scenes from previous Bond films.

Of course after 22 films, it's difficult to make something new. Sure, CR did many things 'new' and even QOS had some fairly original things to offer, but I'm more intrigued by SP. With our enthusiasm slowly building, reactions to the trailer have been rather positive with specific praise for the callbacks to OHMSS.

I'm just curious to see how people will respond to those in the finished film. ;-)

I agree @DarthDimi. EON appears to be deliberately evoking OHMSS with SP (starting with the bullet through glass original poster, and most recently with the Barry track on the trailer).

It's a bold move, but I too wonder what it means and how it will play out. I'm fairly sure that many casual fans haven't seen OHMSS and may not even have recognized the music in the trailer (after all, it's not a very famous #1 hit or anything, being an instrumental....even if one of Barry's best). However, hardcore fans are truly being teased with these throwbacks, as we have more of an understanding of the possible implications.

Ultimately, EON/Mendes must be very confident in order to do this, given the reverence the earlier film has these days among the faithful. It's a great technique to stir the passions and increase enthusiasm among the hardcore fans for SP.

I am hopeful that the references to OHMSS will be less blatant and hamfisted than Forster's GF ref in QoS and Mendes DB5 (again!) lapse in SF.

I'm easily tired by people who open topics......so easily, so lazy. There's absolutely no initiative to.....come up with some good idea or background history. Just "Hoppa", it's there. Not to mention the lack of responses by the topic started on its own topic. /:)

I've been member of a student fraternity. And in my time we properly "initiated" a new member in our "dispuut" (is Dutch for "association, a leg or branch of a fraternity).

Skyfall was no remake of TWINE, not on purpose anyway.

TWINE has practically the same story with M.
Silva is a mix of Alec Trevelyan and The Joker from The Dark Knight.

I recommend watching TWINE and Skyfall back to back and you'll see how lazy the writing in Skyfall was.

When I saw Skyfall the first time, and I didn't know a thing about the story, I fell almost out of my seat when realising how similar it was in places to TWINE.

Well it's Purvis and Wade recycling the same lame ideas. God only knows why EON are unable to find a long term replacement for those two.

    I know.

It's one of the things I don't understand about Babs. What is the hold that P+W have over her and EON? They're awful.
