It's 1980 and Moore looks like he is not coming back...who would you like for the role.........

    Honestly Im happy Moore stuck around to do FYEO and OP. His progression as Bond was the opposite of Connery's. Whereas Connery visibly began getting bored with the role around TB, Moore on the other hand seemingly got better and better as time went on. Had he retired with MR I wouldn't have liked him nearly as much as FYEO and OP are my two favroite Moore films. And even if he looks a bit older the man simply ozzes charm.

    Just because the actor may be having fun and enjoying themselves in their respective picture it doesn't necessarily mean the viewer will be also, what I mean is, Moore for his latter tenure may have decided to stay on and went to visit some fancy locations and genuinely enjoyed it in the twilight of their Bond career but that's not how some of us watching back home felt about it. He didn't actually step down from the part until 1986 and it has been said he may have considered another go of all things, by mercy we were spared that and Dalton came along and picked up the pieces and restored some pride to the franchise

    Yes, I certainly did! The only thing that maybe would have been better regarding this particular subject is if Timothy Dalton did AVTAK. Now, I still love Roger in AVTAK, but his age really shows, and actually has real consequences in regards to AVTAK's poor action scenes. If Dalton had done it, then I think AVTAK would soar to the top of the charts on people's rankings, because the plot, characters, and locations are all really good.

    @Baltimore007 I think the general consensus among fans regarding FYEO and OP are positive ones. It was only AVTAK that things got carried away and that was only do to his age. But I certainly don't believe that by 1980 audiences were tired of Moore. Today his popularity is very downplayed but the fact of the matter is that audiences still liked him well into the early 80s.

    Bed's calling but I wasn't tired of him so to speak, it's just that he seemed wholly inappropriate in the part after FYEO, too much silly humor also that wasn't really needed after a mainly straight faced adventure in 1981. I don't mind Moore too much as 007, he was even in my favorite of the lot Live and Let Die and I did enjoy some other releases such as Spy and Golden Gun but it merely got to a stage where you would watch on and think 'This isn't James Bond'

    Tim Dalton, without question. Moore's final three Bond pics would have all been significantly improved by the younger Dalton's presence.

    He was signed up to the role (according to the Daily Mail). Only problem is no-one has ever seen him or knows if he actually existed in the first place! But if Finlay is out there, hello. Come and post. :P

    Thank some deity that it was Moore that happened and not Dalton who most certainly would have stopped the franchise from continuing. His OP against NSNA would have been a bloodbath of Connerian propotions.

    I think moore should've done moonraker sooner, then done octopussy in 1979. Leave the 80s to dalton. I think rogers bond would have "moore" fans (sorry, sorry) if he didn't carry on until he was almost 60. He was great but he was too old.

    I totally agree. He absolutely grew into the part and he never seemed bored of it. I get the impression he loved making them and that he was a much loved part of the Bond family. I particularly like his performance in OP. What's impressive about Rog is that he can actually turn on the seriousness whenever he wants and when he does he conveys a real sense of tension/drama to the moment. Can't beat him.

    I don't think any of the names mentioned are particularly inspiring, I say stick with Rog and then Timbo can do AVTAK!

    Nah, obviously Sir Rog was the best man for the job in 1980. And so Cubby thought. Over the next few years he auditioned one or two others for the role as we all know, but not because he was seriously considering them, more as a gee-up to get Moore to sign his rolling film-by-film contract...

    I was looking for a thread like this! Had to search, but glad I found it!

    If there was some way to do it, I wish that Sam Neill and Liam Neeson had both been able to take up the role. I'm not saying that I would do away with Dalton or any other Bond actor (save Lazenby), but if there had been some way (maybe without the 6 year hiatus and with an aggressive schedule), I would have like to have seen Moore stop with MR or FYEO and then have had Neill, Neeson, and Dalton do three each (in any order). I think Brosnan started at the right time...he was to skinny during the "Remington Steele" days.

    You know, it would have been cool to see what Dalton would have been like in OHMSS.

    A fantasy, I know, but one can dream....

    Nooooo! Then we would never have had Bergerac - a staple of my childhood!

    Dalts was the right man to take over. AVTAK was not Rog's finest hour so may be Tim could have started then. That way we'd have had 3 Dalton movies.

    Yeah I love OP and think it's Moore's second best film, but in AVTAK, even though he was still good in most scenes, he was too old for the action.

    In a dream world of mine, Dalton would've taken over in 1985, and done more in 1991, 1993 and 1995. Brosnan can take over for GE in 1997. Brosnan finishes in 2004 or 2006, then Ewan Mcgregor takes over.

    Anyway, taking over from Moore in 1980 and not Dalton or Brosnan... Liam Neeson seems the right way to go.

    1) Anthony Andrews (love him!)

    2) Liam Neeson (but he would have been a bit young, eh?)

    If we couldn't have had Dalton in 1980 then Sam Neill would have gotten my vote as Bond. His screen test was excellent.

    Agreed- although he sure is a badass now, most people don't remember that he used to be weird looking when he was young. (lol sorry for being so blunt)

    I concur, @Master_Dahark, Liam Neeson looked very odd when he was younger and would not have suited the role of Bond in the early 80's. Take a look at my picture above of Pierce Brosnan with long hair.... I mean Oliver Tobias, and tell me that that isn't more what Bond should look like facially.

    Said it before, but sometimes can't look beyond Lewis Collins for this time period. Would of been involved with the professionals about the time, and furthermore, with the passing of Bernard Lee, I think Gordon Jackson would of made an outstanding M. They were so very similar I always found

    Though I share your enthusiasm for Lewis Collins, @Baltimore_007, it is reported by Collins himself that he had a meeting with Cubby and within 10 minutes Cubby had taken a total dislike to him. Most likely scenario is Collins had been a bit too arrogant and said a few things that rubbed Cubby up the wrong way, spoiling any chance he might of had.

    It does seem that at this stage of Bond, Cubby was more concerned about box office numbers than searching for a new 007, even though he screen tested quite a few replacements at the time. Personally, I think MR should have been Moore's last outing and he should have made way for a younger actor.

    On a side note, I was interested to read that Kenneth Moore almost took over from Bernard Lee as M on LALD when he was very ill, but the actor struggled on and forefilled his duties.

    I love Roger Moore as James Bond, but he should have quitted after the brilliant FYEO. He was too old already in this movie, but still he did such a good job in this movie (probably the best Bond movie of them all!). But he should not have done the last two movies. Possibly Brosnan could have taken over. He was 30, the same age as Lazenby when he played Bond and only slightly younger than Connery in Dr. No. I have heard counterarguments that he looked to young and green. Maybe, but he was considered already in 1986. Alternatively, Dalton, although he is not a very convincing Bond. His Bond is too dark. Here is a list of actors considered. I must admit that I have not even heard about several of them (but neither had I with Dalton, Brosnan or Craig before they played...)

    Hugh Grant could have been a good Bond. Of course in the 1980s he was too young and now he is too old, but he could have been an excellent Bond in the style of Connery and Moore! http://www.contactmusic.com/news-article/grant-wants-to-be-old-fashioned-bond
