    Agreed...it has all the ingredients of a fantastic spy film,and keeps the viewer on edge,you just know that sooner or later Bond is going to face Grant,and it builds the tension up all the way through...an absolute top top top noth spy/Bond film.

    The script for FRWL is the best in the series, I think, from a structure standpoint. Like everything in Young's movies, no moment is wasted and everything is important and necessary that we see.

    The best thing about the film is how the story builds up to that moment between Bond and Grant every step of the way, resulting in the best section of any Bond film for me on the Orient Express. In my FRWL review I say this of Grant:

    As "From Russia with Love" begins and we spot Grant seeking out a faux-Bond to strangle, the screenplay is already crafting a Chekhov’s gun for audiences that is more like a bazooka.

    It's part of why Maibaum is king.

    I love its seedy, musty atmosphere. You can smell the streets of Istanbul as well as the damp air of the mosque.

    This is something they'd better get right in the next film. One of my favourite scenes is Tatiana's intro, as she's first seen on the street & then walks through corridors & tunnel'esque streets to meet Klebb, with Barry's sinister score playing the background. Superb stuff.

    I can't put TLD above FRWL, although TLD is a solid film in its own right.

    Incidentally, FRWL is Dalton's favourite.

    Also on a sidenote FRWL features the best Moneypenny scene, while TLD features the worst (and yes I'm including the DAD VR scene in that),

    I rank FRWL in my top five, and GF just outside of it, but because GF kinda forged the Bond name, then to me it's in the discussion for the most influential spy film ever made. But on a film-to-film comparison, prefer the more grounded, grittier, tougher FRWL.

    It's Sean's (I think) and Dan's favorite too. Pierce's is probably Goldfinger, as that film shaped his life afterward.

    Well I'm a Dalton fan, so TLD has to come ahead of FRWL. Though I have to concur that Caroline Bliss was very poor as Moneypenny, even more so in LTK! (Though her appearance, thankfully was more brief!)
    Samantha Bond I thought was ok, but she quickly became more annoying, so I was glad she wasn't held over for the Craig era!

    I don't like the soppy school girl with a crush style of her character and she flirted with Bond in an obvious and unconvincing way. She also does the same over-the-top sigh at the end of her scene that Smallbone did in OP.

    I think the only positive that came from Dalton's era ending so soon is that we never had to endure Bliss in the role again. Part of that's on her weak and wooden performance, but it's also in the writing. Maibaum gets everything else right, but snoozes on writing a great Moneypenny character that he helped birth. Moneypenny goes from Maxwell's feisty and witty woman to Bliss's meek and dorky girl with a crush. Maxwell's Moneypenny played with Bond, Bliss's fawned over him desperately. How'd that happen, exactly? And Barry Manilow? Christ girl, you've lost the plot. She should've offered Bond an angle food cake...

    Some seem not to like her, but Naomie Harris' Moneypenny is the only take on the character I even think about after Lois. She's able to act feisty and fun and match Craig's Bond wit for wit, as any Moneypenny should be able to do. She was amazing in the Macau section of SF, and I liked her use in SP as well. Elegant, sassy, sarcastic and playful. A nice package.

    Agreed on both counts. Bliss didn't get to do a whole lot as Moneypenny, but what little she did do, I thought that she was just fine. Samantha Bond on the other hand, oh god, her Moneypenny was so heavy handed... it's like probing my inner ear canal with a chainsaw.

    Maxwell (of the Connery and Lazenby years)
    Bliss (I don't mind her)
    Harris (she is nice)
    Bond (depends on my mood if I like her or not)
    Maxwell (the old Granny from the Moore era)

    It wouldn't impress me, no. This coming from someone who has QoS above #5 (I love Connery's early films too much), so aren't I a hypocrite?
