Movies you like where the musical score made it a better film than it actually was...

Omega Man- Good 70's sci-fi film but GREAT Ron Granier (Dr. Who) score!
Shamus- Okay 70's detective film made AWESOME by a superior Goldsmith score.
Legend- Good 80's fantasy made special by a slick Tangerine Dream score.
Rambo: First Blood Part II- Basically a stupid 80's movie given gravitas due to Goldsmith (again; the man was a genius).

Off the top of my head here.

Interesting thread, @chrisisall. If Bond films are to be included, I'll start with DAD. Most of Arnold's musical queues manage to bring life and depth to otherwise empty scenes, with the exchange between Graves and Moon in the Antonov as a prime example.

Several non-Bond films that Barry scored, e.g. The Specialist, Enigma, Indecent Proposal, Mercury Rising, Masquerade, & Body Heat.

Wojciech Kilar's work on The Ninth Gate makes it a far better film. Same goes for his work on Death & The Maiden, although in that case, the film is also quite good.

Nearly everything Jerry Goldsmith touched, including Malice, Along Came A Spider, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Hollow Man etc. etc.

That's just off the top of my head.

    Definitely Conan The Barbarian

Basil Poleduris's score is incredible. Since the film has dialogue few and far between it needs the music to carry it along.

Conan wouldn't be half as good without the amazing score.

I think it's one of the greatest scores ever composed.

Wojciech Kilar's work on Dracula, the movie is so-so but the music is totally awesome and scary and beautiful when listened stand alone.

Robocop 3 was an okay film, but Poledouris' music is really the main reason I enjoy it.

Off the top of my head (some of these are good films made great by the music)...

    1. The Mission (1986, Ennio Morricone)
    2. Less Than Zero (1987, Thomas Newman)
    3. The Amityville Horror (1979, Lalo Schifrin)
    4. White Palace (1990, George Fenton)
    5. The Deep (1977, John Barry)
    6. Zero Dark Thirty (2012, Alexandre Desplat)
    7. A Beautiful Mind (2001, James Horner)
    8. The Social Network (2010, Tent Reznor and Atticus Ross)

George S. Clinton's work on Wild Things is brilliant and really lifts that film.

    I think I'll give it a watch tomorrow. It's been a while.

    Star Trek V

I know this movie gets a lot of flack but I think it's a decent Star Trek movie and Jerry Goldsmith's score makes it watchable.

    Yeah that's an amazing score.

They used a Kilar piece for the Schindler's List trailer. Incredible music.

Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace. That film is one big flaw - but John Williams Duel of the Fates elevates that three way fight scene to one of the best of the series. His work in the prequels is outstanding.

Some less than stellar films with great scores:

    1492: Conquest of Paradise
    A View to a Kill
    Exorcist II: The Heretic
    Zombi 3
    Beyond the Door (Chi sei?)

Good god! It was the longest few hours I've ever spent in a cinema! Felt like it was 7 hours long!

Must admit I rather like Who Dares Wins

The SAS assault at the end is a great sequence! The rest of the film is a bit meh but it's a guilty pleasure for me!

The Roy Budd score really is mean and cool!

@LeonardPine, didn't you find it a bit overplayed? I liked the score, but I recall they kept using the same cue over and over, and by the end it seemed 'played out'. That's just from memory.

Well I think it's mainly used in the final SAS assault than anywhere else in the film. Although it's also played over the end titles. Just love the theme!

I must admit I'm often more liable to watch the last 15 minutes than the whole film!

I did enjoy it too. Great fun. I'll try to get a watch in during the next few days after Wild Things, which I mentioned on this thread yesterday (also a very good score). Denise Richards in a bikini is an added bonus.

    Krull

Pretty awful fantasy film from the early 80's

But what a score from James Horner!

Haven't seen Wild Things for years.

I remember it being a good little thriller and yes, Denise Richards was quite memorable in it.
