I think there were more explicit sex scenes and blood spattering violence in movies during the 80's in particular. A lot of films from that era have that, more so than now imho.

Having said that, there is probably more of it on tv these days, but I think that's on account of more 'niche' programming with the advent of cable tv and channels like HBO & AMC which are more adult targeted. In the past tv was trying to appeal to everyone 'en masse' but that's less so these days.

Thank you, that's actually a very good point. I don't watch any of these modern TV shows mentioned by the way - fantasy's not my sort of thing really.

@tanaka123, "be more respectable" about what, exactly? You find offense in the naked body? Am I the only one that finds it odd that someone would pay extra for a premium channel like HBO, just to find offense in the programming? There are no illusions when it comes to 'Game of Thrones,' you needn't even see an episode to know what type of show you're getting into. I just find it funny that in the first few seasons, we had infanticide, pregnant women stabbed to death, countless rapes, etc., and yet nobody said a word until the "infamous" mid-season five scene occurred and everyone started losing their minds over what was arguably a rather tame scene in the grand scheme of things.

@DaltonCraig007, not as much as you enjoyed the sight of that nude body! ;)

That scene most certainly took me by surprise.

@Creasy47 please don't make this into an argument, I only asked you to respect my views. If I don't wish to watch TV programmes with nudity that's my business. I don't pay for HBO. I've never seen an episode of Game of Thrones. Don't demean your position as a moderator.

No, you were cutting in on a reply I made to someone else entirely, so you took offense over something not directed at you, unless you took offense to the harmless joke I made about the human body somehow.

@tanaka123, I'm not sure I understand. If you don't pay for HBO, then what are you objecting to exactly? Is it the nudity on GoT specifically or is it the premise of nudity in general on paid for television.

If it's paid for then surely it's ok, since the buyer knows what he/she is getting, no?

There was a rape scene. The victim is a young woman, about 16-18 and a high bred "lady" while the rapist is a sadist cocksucker, a bastard by birth but raised to legitimacy. It may have been tame but I (and others found it rather disturbing). the rapist makes his degraded servant watch.

The burning of the child at the stake is more disturbing. Hearing her screams while her mother looks on (mother later hangs herself).

All you folks who play simplistic by the "don't watch" comments is beside the point. Violence in Bond films is tastefully done, 24 which I thought was a violent show handled the deaths and torture with class and did not resort to the graphic displays we are subjected to today. The first season of American Horror Story did not resort to what later seasons show us.

Remember that old western "Winchester 73 ' ? the scene where the native Americans killed and scalped the gun dealer? It was never shown. His dead body was not zoomed in, guys who found him just made a comment on the scalping. Nowadays we would see the whole bloody scene in its entirety.

@OHMSS69, but it's not like the first four seasons were filled with fairies and rainbows and sunshine, either. I just don't see how people found that mid-season five scene to be too much when you literally see none of it going down. What was your reaction to a particular pregnant woman being stabbed to death? Or countless innocent people having their throats slit at a wedding? Or teenagers being poisoned at their wedding? Were these events somehow okay and not as harsh as what we saw in season five?

    @Creasy47
lol, the red wedding was very upsetting. I never said I approve of that bloodfest. Seeing what befell Robb and his family was very sad and shocking (that scene is in the book by the way)

As for teens being poisoned at their wedding, I and many others was glad to see that happen. The character was so despicable and I have one friend who (while watching it on DVD) reversed and watched it again. :))

So did we really evolve that much much from the Romans who enjoyed a nice bloody day at the Colosseum. We like to watch our violence in the comfort of our homes but in close up due to technical advances.

We are still a bunch of barbarians and our popular shows do tell that we are still a bloodthirsty bunch.

@bondjames I wasn't and aren't really objecting to anything. I'm okay with nudity been on TV paid for or not, but I decide not to watch it. If someone else pays for it and wants to watch it that's for them to decide not me. I don't have a problem with other people watching it if they so wish.

Ok, thanks, I understand. Of course, if one doesn't want to watch it, then it can be an inconvenience in an otherwise acceptable show, when it does pop up. It doesn't spoil it for those, like myself, who don't mind it. However, I can see how it could be a nuisance to those who'd prefer it not be there.

A thread about the influx of violence on tv, and I wondered how long it would be until The Walking Dead was going to be brought up. I was going to suggest people "look at the flowers", guess I don't have to now.

The Walking Dead is Grey's Anatomy with the occasional zombie thrown in.

I've never watched Grey's Anatomy. Hmm... it's a medical drama. Well, there is a lot of blood and guts, but no MRSA, in The Walking Dead.

70s/80s cannibal films , nuff said.....

I find the violence in "Casino" much more disturbing than most action films , feels more realistic.

This thread was about TV in particular but since you mentioned "Casino" I consider that to be a train wreck. "Goodfellas" by comparison is one of Scorsese's masterpieces. Violent but in context while "Casino" just went too far. Like "Predator" versus "Total Recall". One the violence is in step while the other is just Way over the Top.
    IMO...

Love that shot of Nixon in there.

I think it was Twin Peaks that started this trend of violent tv. Some scenes there were absolutely shocking in 1990, but no one would raise an eyebrow today, with all the serial killer and forensics shows we have been flooded with the past couple of decades.

This is like a thread I'd create, only I didn't. Strange, though I did have to check the OP just to make sure I wasn't going mad(der).
