It looks like David Arnold talked about Bernard Herrmann's Psycho score at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London yesterday. There he confirmed he hasn't been asked to score Bond 23 yet. Does it mean there is a chance the movie will get an other composer?

    Well i like david arnold, always have. No he isn't the legend that was (sadly) john barry, but who is. He respects the franchise and has worked hard to give it a modern sound so I say let him continue.

    I know its incredibly fashionable for Bond fans to hate David Arnold but I think he's ok. As Mr Sterling said he is certainly no John Barry but IMO he's done some pretty decent scores for the franchise (check out the TND soundtrack or 'Crawl', the final track to QoS).

    I even heard it was John Barry himself who recommended Arnold so :p to all you haters ;)

    I hope David Arnold does return for Bond 23 and have never understood all the animosity there is on this site for him, he understands the 'Bond sound' and his soundtracks have got increasingly better and more sophisticated with time. Considering now the only on screen links to the franchise past are Judi Dench's 'M' (someone else people here seem desperate to get rid of) and David Arnold's music, do we really want anymore radical changes to the rebooted Bond just yet?

    I'm a fan of Arnold too and have enjoyed all his Bond soundtracks (although DAD was too synthed for my tastes). So, I'd be happy if he came back but I'm not against the idea of finding someone new. Would a new composer qualify as a radical change?

    Well, I dont think he shouldn't yet. It's still preproduction of the film for crying out loud. He's a fine composer and I salute him for updating the sound of the music, but he's still no John Barry.

    That's basically the reason why I want him replaced. I don't hate him, I don't dislike him, I find him to be decent, but I want something more, and after 5 scores now, I haven't heard anything great from him, I want a change.

    Crawl was a remix of David Arnold's score by FourTet, I dont think he had much involvement with it, they just took his work and re-arranged it.

    Nonsense. CR's soundtrack is the most boring, musically empty score of the entire franchise. People tend to think 'You Know My Name' and Vesper's theme, but the rest is musical abomination. DAD was passable, due to Arnold playing around with his electronics. BUT, the over-use of the Bond theme and going too far with the techno brings that score down.

    Miami International is just soul destroyingly terrible. For a big action sequence, its just... urgh.

    If Arnold isn't hired then John Powell will probably get the gig, seeing as how Babs wants Bond to be a sub-standard copy of Jason Bourne these days. I'd like to see Howard Shore do it though, his scores for the LOTR films are fantastic. I'd love to hear his take on the James Bond theme.

    I think it's too soon for that kind of contact. Anyway, he probably have a MGM/EON contract, so needn't worry about that.

    Absolutely. TND-DAD is not an era most of us will likely look back fondly on in years to come.

    If it's broke, then fix it. Judi Dench is too old, and David Arnold has a limited imagination. Bring in some fresh blood, or you'll put Daniel Craig's talents to waste.

    Arnold's sound is still stuck in late 90s trip-hop and big beat. He needs to move on.

    Isn't George Martin older now than John Barry was when he died a couple of months or so ago? Martin's LALD score has always been something of a must with me and I love the man for his genius work with The Beatles, but really, he's highly unlikely to score another movie. Indeed, unless I'm wrong, I think he may even have announced recently that he's officially retired...

    Sadly that's right. George Martin publicly announced he's deaf in 2010, and has been working with his youngest son, Giles, since on Love Show In Vegas to try and overcome that.

    Hamlisch and Conti are still available. Though the former's score for THE INFORMANT wasn't too impressive, Conti isn't doing much in the way of commissions (according to the internet, at least).

    Hamlisch was best in The Sting, an iconic film of 1970s, one of my favourites as I saw the film in a theatre in Mid-West on the first day of its release. Newman and Redford were superb. Robert Shaw was superb. There is a Bond connection there.

    I'd be quite happy with DA returning for Bond #23 - thought that he did a reasonable job on CR, although as with everyone else, DA ain't JB. I just really hope that the composer can collaborate with who-ever the title song band/singer will be (like in CR) and also get a director who works with the composer (such as Besson/Serra, Minghella/Yared, Hitchcock/Hermann, DePalma/Donaggio) to create added drama/tension/romance to any scene. For example, I'm sure that Serra could have done a good soundtrack to the Ferrari/Aston chase sequence in Goldeneye, however it appears that there was a lack of direction (no pun intended) and instead Serra reverted to goofy sounding score, instead of dramatic or tense.

    Other suggestions for composers would be Hans Zimmer (that would certainly be a big sound :-D ) or Elliot Goldenthal for a more classical sound, or what about going for a more modern sound using an up-to-date producer (similar to Live and Let Die), such as Mark Ronson or Xenomania - this would bring the sound bang up to date.

    @connerybond You lucky barsteward; I'm very envious - of course, I wasn't born at the time so couldn't possibly have seen it on release myself, but still... ;)
